It's a precarious situation.. unless there is a huge plot-twist coming.. it looks like Flanno wants to run with Hunt for 2025.. one more year.. which gives him a chance to spread the net properly.. and thoroughly... and see what he can come up with for 2026.. because once Hunt has an end-date, Flanno can genuinely try to tempt players further up the food chain with a guaranteed first grade gig.. and hopefully a better looking roster and pack to entice them with.

It is possible he buys an Ilias or a Pezet (I doubt we get him though) with 12mths to develop them in our system first.. but I just cant see Flanno parting with 500-600k numbers for a reserve halfback.. I dont think he wants to rush this decision.

But I think we can afford to lose Hunt if we wanted too now.. we have some respectable marquee type players in Cook & Holmes.. and I think ideally he would love say a Gutho @6 to take the pressure off the new halfback.. Hunt could perhaps play 6 but we have had this conversation before.

I dont know of any 'experienced' halfbacks on the market that we're going to be able to sign.. not genuine halves.. I think were gonna have to find someone stuck behind a rep 7, or someone cast-aside prematurely.. I dunno.. I guess thats something we wont know for a while yet.

i dont know why everyone says this. The sharks fowards are way bigger than ours. Hunt, Kaufusi, Hamlin Uele, That tall bald bloke ran straight over the top of us. Royce Hunt in particular was having a field day. We have no one like that.

Agree we need a pack that are athletic and can get over the advantage line with quick play the balls ........ We also need a faster player in the centre's and wing ....... If they are to miss a tackle or are out of positions they have half a chance of readjusting ...... The game has changed so much and if players are not big fast and athletic you won't cut it .......

Yeah its a rly valid point, Flanno needs a rly strong 2025.. enough to show that 2024 wasnt a fluke.. but its why its surprised me he hasnt splashed a little more cash to make sure it is... but hes a man of principle.. hes doing what he believes in for the clubs future.

I reckon if next year is going well they probably extend him.. he probably has to decide on a halfback before that though.. there are a lot of players still not contracted for 2026 (on market Nov 1), but that still gives 2 months for clubs to wrap up deals yet.. some will want to go to market..

Fogarty is one of them.. but he would just be turning 32 by 2026 season.. its too old I think.

Clint is not a silver bullet but i'm at the point where if flano reckons he has something to offer then i'm down for it.

With RCG, JDB, Hunt, Holmes, Cook and potentially Gutho as our key talent and leaders it leaves about a 1-2 year window to make something drastic happen. Get them all firing at the same time and it wouldn't be half bad.

This is my view also.. there is just no easy path for us to the top... we cant land the half-decent names (and we do keep trying).. so if Flanno thinks he can get value out of a certain type of man/leader/player, that will bring us closer to our goal, and reduce our inconsistency.... im down....

Flanno has done it before, all the way to a premiership, I think its going to take longer at Saints because he wasnt contending with such a stretched player market last time... and no Gallen/Captain to build around... but I wouldnt back half of the coaches in the NRL to have been able to do what hes done this year with an absolute pile of poo roster.

I think that’s definitely what we need. A real 7, Fogarty, sexton or Pezet would be the best to go for, for 2026. I mean a wishart would be nice but he’s more suited to 6, 9 or 14. We need a real organiser. Can’t remember the last time we had one? Probably Matt Head, but injuries got the best of him

Matt Head was , Hornby did the job but was a make up 7 ....... Hunt is a good runner of the ball and good at playing what's in front of him , but not a team organiser or captain ......

i think Flanno wants to think really carefully about the 2026 Halfback... He has a little bit of time now, and potentially players will go to market on Nov 1st.. and he might have 1 or 2 in mind.. I am sure he would want someone experienced.. but ultimately he will have to keep his mind open given how hard its been for us to land who we want.

Forget Gutho, we need to go all out for either Mitch Moses or Walker...the 2 best halves likely to be available.
Whatever it takes....start at $1.3M for Moses, $1.1M Walker and if necessary go higher.
By the time it all happens, cap will increase and these figures will be more common.
If we end up with Gutho, I would have him at 6 if we have fullback covered by Sloan or Teddy.

I think we need to be more strategic in who we can sweet-talk.. but yah if Gutho comes I reckon hes a 6 for sure.. unless its ctr with holmes to fullback.. either way though.. I think Flanno would love the option.. but anyway time will tell.. and im just assuming we wont have him for now..

Gutho would be a great pick up for us but not as a fullback, I feel he would be good as a 5/8 and Flannagan to half. King Tonga maybe a reasonable fullback.
