Greats to mentor Kiwis
Thursday, 24 April 2008

THEY'RE BACK: Kiwi greats Stacey Jones, left, and Ruben Wiki are coming back with mentoring roles for New Zealand Rugby League, including the centenary test against the Kangaroos in Sydney on May 9.

Two of the Kiwis' greatest servants will be back to help out the New Zealand rugby league team, beginning with the centenary clash with Australia next month.
Former skippers Ruben Wiki and Stacey Jones will have mentoring roles for the New Zealand Rugby League, including in the test in Sydney on May 9, the NZRL announced today.
Kiwi coach Stephen Kearney, who played many of his 45 tests alongside the pair, said he was keen to have them in support positions.
Wiki, skipper of the New Zealand Warriors, who are away to the Gold Coast Titans this weekend, said his focus at the moment was on the National Rugby League.
"But Steve has asked me to help out in whatever way I can with the Kiwis and I'd love to do it," Wiki said.
"I was always so proud to play for my country, to pull on the black and white jersey. I hope I can pass some things on to the boys and help to bring some pride back into the jersey."
Wiki, 35, played a world record 55 tests between 1994 and 2006.
Jones, 31, said he was thrilled to be involved with the Kiwis again, having represented them 46 times between 1995 and 2006.
"I was thrilled when Steve asked," he said.
"If he thinks I can help, I'm only too pleased to be involved."
Jones hung his boots up last year after 238 games for the Warriors and two seasons with Les Catalans Dragons in the English Super League.
At present, he also has a role in helping out the Warriors' halves and kickers.
The NZRL also announced Pirtek as the Kiwis' new major sponsor.

Issac Luke and Dave Fa'alogo deserve a spot.

And they'll get one - they might be a little rusty but looked liked souths best last week.

Fa'alogo probably one of the most physical guys in the NRL and was made for test football.

Luke is probably going to the best hooker in the game. I dont care if he has a massive bandage on his arm. If they pick anybody else particularly fien I will consider not watching the game.

Also expect at least one suprise in the team - my sources wont reveal what the selection is but there is one out of left-field.

My theory is Michael Jennings; apparently one kiwi parent - he wasnt picked for City Origin in a team which picked guys like Rooney, Pommeroy and Delaney. And if he is aligned to aussie - they are idiots!!!! perhaps they assume he is just a kiwi or tongan.

Last year he was close to making it into the aussie senior team.

Jennings played for the Junior Kangaroos last year.

Doesnt mean anything? so was lagi setu and he was at the same time training with senior kiwis.

He wont get named anyway?

Its going to be a Rooster Dominated backline. All Im going to say. With all four kiwis in the team.

Biggest question is whether or not we get thomas back and what happens there - if he doesnt might have to have roberts at 7. Seems like Kearney doesnt want to rush benji back but he might have to unless they play sa, matai at 6 or pulls chase out of illawarra A grade.

Luke and Fien will be hookers. I hope fien gets injured on the weekend - not a major injury just a hammy or he does a mean high tackle.

Perhaps the suprise is change of captain; SBW and Cayless.

With what happened last year on tour and so on plus souths winless: Asotasi should rightfully be benched and/or not re-appointed as captain. Lima and cayless are playing better anyway.

Sounds like the powers that be in the NZRL are going to grow a couple and take on the UK clubs, finally. The rumour is they're going to name a couple of the players UK clubs have refused to release, and see what happens.
Good on them, that's long overdue!!! After all, if the Kiwis can be stripped of two points during Grannygate with the international rules, lets see what happens to these UK clubs that refuse to budge. The International rules state very clearly Tests take precedence and if players are selected Clubs HAVE to release them.
This can of worms has to be opened and tested IMO.
