Packer victim closes Facebook account

A Sydney man who says he was assaulted by former Kiwis Russell Packer has closed down a social media account after making disparaging comments regarding what the league international can expect in prison.

Enoka Time reportedly made the postings on Facebook yesterday soon after Packer was sentenced to two years in jail after pleading guilty to an assault charge.

The 22-year-old made standard prison-style references to what Packer can look forward to while serving time for an incident that left Time unconscious and with facial injuries.

Father-of-two Packer spent his first night incarcerated last night after a bail application was refused pending an appeal of his sentence on February 11.

Time, who was punched and then stomped on the head when he fell to the ground in Sydney's CBD during an altercation with Packer in late November, welcomed the judgement and then predictably copped abuse.

"Lol haha have a good Monday people" is a sanitised version of what Time posted on his Facebook page. It attracted 12 likes and 16 comments before the account was disabled.

However, a screen shot of the post was uploaded to twitter, drawing outrage from Packer's supporters.

"No wonder why Russell Packer knocked you out," tweeted Michael Luke.

Knights coach Wayne Bennett supplied a supportive letter on Packer's behalf at yesterday's hearing while football general manager Warren Smiles confirmed Newcastle would continue to support "Russell through the process and his family, his two young children."

The club said there would be no further comment until the appeal process had concluded, after which they would make a final decision on whether or not to terminate Packer's lucrative contract - a policy that angered some fans via the club's Facebook page.

''The club acknowledge Packer pleaded guilty and was sentenced on Monday, but also acknowledge the legal process remains ongoing," a statement read.

''The club does not condone Packer's behaviour, however there is an obligation to ensure the welfare of him and his young family.

''Packer relocated his family from New Zealand to Newcastle and they are without a support network.''

It makes you wonder what events led to Packer giving this Enoka Time a hiding. With his now deleted Facebook comments further inflaming the situation suggests that the merkin might have incited Packer to pursue the course of action which led to his arrest and subsequent prison time.

Who knows what really happened? I know for one thing. If somebody made derogatory or disgusting comments about myself or my family, I wouldn't be shaking their hand and buying them a beer.

You don't also think that another potential reason is that the guy is angry?

Obviously your a better human being than me, but if I was knocked unconscious and then stomped on I wouldn't be in a very happy frame of mind.

But it's ok to stomp their head?

I don't understand your point in relation to this bit.

Your saying that the magistrate should have given a more lenient sentence as that would be consistent and therefore a bigger deterrent?

I believe each case should be dealt with according to the facts, not just one blanket sentence for "assualt" which could range from an open handed slap to knocking someone unconscious and than stomping on there head.

There is no deterrent here. Harsh penalties are no deterrent, some of the places with the harshest penalties have the biggest prison populations.

I'm all for locking up thugs but we can't go around saying that this will stop the problem. Testosterone + alcohol + ElephantJuice = the problem. And the parents of these gen y d***heads deserve to be locked up too, they raised the pricks.

Newcastle lowered their late night assault rate by simply restricting the supply of booze. So much cheaper and simpler than using the courts as a deterrent. I suppose sending Russell to Sydney for the weekends might have helped with the crime rate too.

There is the problem with society right there.

Somebody wants to be an idiot, and someone else is quick to make two of them.

Also makes the point about there being no deterrent. People get two years jail for fighting nowadays, and still blokes are talking about having a stink over a bit of name calling.

How does the message get through to these people?

I'd like to see the next judge up hold the sentence and hopefully this will send dumb fuelled up merkins think twice about doing stupid shit like this, and if it doesn't then they can enjoy time in the big house, I'm sick of cowards getting soft and suspended sentences

Could this not be as simple as the victims motivation for such posts coming from the fact that he was seriously assaulted by packer and see's this as retribution being handed out by the law?

What is really disturbing is the amount of support other players are are giving Packer on Twitter due to his 'harsh' treatment.

Getting really over the number of entitled douchebags that seem to be everywhere in league these days.
There is 2 sides to every story.

I'm getting over the number of PC douchebags that seem to jump on the PC bandwagon to tread some untouchable moral high ground like they're Jesus. Perhaps the guy that Packer smacked was being a twat. I'm not condoning violence but sometimes some people deserve what they get. The problem with kids these days is they have zero respect.

I agree with the sentiment of the last sentence. But on the flip side I think the people who are even worse are the juiced up roid-ragers who go out with the sole intention of causing a bit of carnage.

I'm not saying Packer falls into the latter category, but I wouldn't at all be surprised if he was an absolute w*nker on the piss and the fact that he's behind bars is probably in the best interest of society.

In what f**king world do you live in, that you think condemning someone for knocking someone unconscious and stomping on them is being PC?

I have no problem with packer belting some merkin

What I have a problem with is what happened after he hit the ground

is his lawyer a thug and meathead?

he's a lawyer so that automatically makes him a douchebag

The act of stomping on someone's head after they have been knocked down after a gallen-shot should show enough intention for an murder/attempted murder charge, the same as killing someone whilst drunk driving should attract a murder charge.

i like this better than coward shot :D

Yup.

Pretty sure they were appealing the sentence but experts predicted that there was little chance of any change.

the way the appeals system is set up benefits the defence more than the prosecution. my understanding is the defence can appeal for pretty much everything - wrong decisions, unfair punishment, things not taken into consideration etc. the prosecution on the other hand if a guilty verdict is obtained can only appeal if the sentence is manifestly weak (might not be the correct term but its something like that).

now if you take the first point i made about the defence, the sentences have been getting eroded due to appeals and piss weak magistrates so a 4 year sentence will almost no doubt be seen as "about right" when compared to other weak sentences handed out. so the odds are incredibly minimal loveridge would get any extra time (though he deserves another 6 years at least)

the guy is probably reacting to having a gorilla stomp on him. if a gorilla stomped on me i wouldnt be buying them a beer either....

the problem is people like you who are suggesting what packer did is in any way justifiable. if the guy mouthed off packer can walk away or talk shit back. he doesnt get to start belting people on the ground and stomping them. the victim may have had "zero" respect but that doesnt mean the extreme level of violence displayed was in any way justified
