Knight Russell Packer jailed for two years

I have plenty of mates with big builds (not body builder builds though) who go to the gym regularly, and everyone of them that I can think of has either done steroids at some point, or is doing them. Most of those guys go to the gym because they want to get big/cut, and most of them atleast try steroids at some point because it makes it far easier and quicker to achieve what they want.

An athlete in a professional sport is less likely to do it because it's a banned substance that would get them punished when/if they are caught. Although even then, athletes are still trying to find ways around that to get where they want quicker and easier. If I had the discipline to go to a gym and get into shape, I'd probably look at trying steroids too. Why not take a short cut that delivers better results? Personally it's still too much discipline for me... any free time I have tends to be used for sitting back with a beer watching tv or a movie while entertaining my kids.

How many 20 year olds do you know that train full time in the way NRL U20's do? That's what you'd need to do to achieve the size some of these roid munchers get to.

The vast majority of kids with v shaped backs and enormous arms have used steroids. The engorged jaw lines and huge pimples across the shoulders are usually telltale signs as well.

I'm not saying it's not attainable, but the people that have achieved it naturally are in the minority.

You are just making generalisations with nothing to back it up. Like i've never touched roids and I had pimples on my back at that age, its called hormones.

No doubt there are plenty of young blokes on roids, but there are also a lot of big strong boys who aren't on them. Its ridiculous to say otherwise.

As I have said before, I believe many of the problems stem from the Gen Y gym culture, roids, recreational ElephantJuice (if such a thing exist) and the binge drinking culture.

Roids with party ElephantJuice combined with binge drinking and the "it's about ME" belief of the Gen Ys = inevitable violence.

That is not to say violence didn't exist in my generation; but not this shit and not at this level.

Alcohol is only a small part of the problem.

Young people have no respect for each other or themselves anymore. Couple that in with a mix of hormones, possible steriod abuse, inability to communicate without a mobile phone in their hands and a self absorbed sense of entitlement you already have a ticking time bomb. ElephantJuice and alcohol are the final step to these events occurring.

These young blokes are merkins to begin with, it's only after the alcohol/ElephantJuice remove their inhibitions to you see the devil really come out to dance.

Are we really acting like young blokes belting each other is something new? Alcohol fueled violence has been around for hundreds, if not thousands of years.

I think some of you are remembering the good old days a bit too fondly.

Twitter, X-box and Blu-ray are clearly at fault brah.

Packer needs medication to help conquer his Gta5 addiction.

That is bloody true.

Ok, Guts and Betcats; some questions.

When did the binge drinking culture come in to vogue? In my days (1980s to early 90s), you could drink in a pub or club for normal pub prices. Therefore, there was no need to pre (if that it what it is called, these days); you could have a dozen schooners without emptying your wallet.

When did steriods get into the general gym scene? Again, having played a modest level of football up to the early 90s and occasionally pushing some weights in the off season, I can attest they were not on offer to the normal gym users; at the time.

That is not to say there was no violence - there were sharpie and skinhead gangs around from the 1970s onwards.

I agree that the binge drinking culture has probably led to an increase in assaults etc but is that really a suprise?? More people going out and drinking more alcohol which leads to more trouble...it doesnt seem like rocket science to me.

As for the steroids, I think that is being very overrated because of the bloke from NYE being a bodybuilder. How do steroids factor into the Packer situation?

Never said it did.

You don't need to be a genius to have heard of roid rage. Hormones of the 20 year olds and the ease of access to steroids plus the gym culture/body concious image of Gen Ys (I have two - but, thank god they have not gone near them). As Sherlock Holmes would say, case closed.

Its not, you talk to anyone who was visiting pubs 40 years ago and they'll tell you it was an absolute blood bath back then, much more so than today. Im young so im taking their word for it, my father recons pub fights used to be literally a daily occurance at every pub he went to... i havent seen a legit pub fight in years

the issue of today is the rules of engagement have changed and the nature of the fighters has too...
30 years ago one drunk slob would crack the shits at another drunk slob and before you knew it, 2 drunk slobs were squaring up their 100kg of flab frames in the bar face to face... and they'd trade haymakers until one slob dropped and that was that

now days you have gym rats who spar and practise mixed martial arts etc, cracking it at each other, and instead of squaring off fairly, one walks away, stews on it, waits for his moment, be it when the guy isnt looking, or he's walking out hours later having forgotten the incident or if not forgotten at least thought it had been dealt with some push and shoving and some heavy words and everyone had moved on with their night, and he runs in and blind sides the guy with the jacked up best shot... then when his victim hits the deck, it's not enough, you cant just knock a guy down anymore, you gotta kick him and punch him, or Packers chase, stomp him and when hits the deck.

That's the difference, instead of squaring up fairly and each participant kind of knows it's coming and you prepare yourself for the fight and know once you drop you've lost and it's over, now days you get blindsided and before you even know you're in a fight, your knocked clean out and this coward and probably some of his mates are kicking the crap out of you when your down.

You are fairly close to being spot on. Seen (and had a few) pub fights in the days. I can say, I never seen anyone glassed or kicked when down.
