Knight Russell Packer jailed for two years

what makes you think the knights didnt know what had happened? the integrity unit knew what had happened and my understanding is the unit and clubs liaise with each other over incidents. the integrity unit refused to register him for at least 12 months based purely on the info they had, its probable the knights had similar info yet were hoping for the usual slap on the wrist, send him to "counselling" and play him in 2015

as for the family/kids argument, it's hard on them, but if packer was an average kiwi coming to australia for work opportunities and a better life, his prospective employer wouldn't necessarily be "looking after" his family just because he was a lunatic and stomped someone. i think its a nice gesture they knights are helping but i cant see any other industry where the organisation would be taking care of the family in this way

It is only a presumption that an employer wouldn't lend some support to an incarcerated colleague and the industry they are involved in is irrelevant. But you're right - the sporting industry can be generous with it's forgiveness. Wayne Bennett has supported the likes of John Elias when he was locked up, and Elias shot a bloke. There was a guy playing AFL that had been to jail for assault, and Chris Munce has been accepted back into racing after paying his debt to society. Some people still look after their friends and family, even when they are in prison and then when they get out. Whether the knights are doing it out of goodwill or what, I don't know. But to put it simply, I'm hoping that Packer gets out of jail a better person and if the knights are going to try to make this happen by giving his family a hand then it is a good thing. The last thing society needs is blokes coming out of prison worse than when they went in - they were usually s**t when they went in.

The worst thing for society about prison is that the family suffer when dad is locked up. You can't punish a crim without punishing their family, who have done nothing wrong in this case. The world needs less troubled families. Hopefully the work the knights put in with the Packer family has positive effects.

And nobody knows what kind of support is being offered. As I read on another site, it could be free use of the club doctor or free counselling or babysitting for the kids. It could just be the lend of a car from a club sponsor once a fortnight so that the family can visit their father and maybe a friendly face to drive them there. The knights have plenty of resources and contacts, they might have found a job for mum with a club sponsor.....support could mean anything positive for the family, even simply moral support. I'm pretty sure the club isn't throwing wads of cash at them. Nathan hasn't got wads to throw at them anyway.

I'm more than happy to see the book thrown at the crim, but I can't understand why people would want to see his kids have a harder life than is necessary.

all good points Eoz.

i dont think anyone wants the perpetrators family to suffer but too often we forget the real victim here who was the guy who got stomped. his family have suffered as well. packer's in the media because of his profile, his family are getting sympathy because of his profile, what about the victim?

the knights support might be small things like you've said - for all we know if his appeal still results in a long jail term she may go back to NZ to be with family till he gets released

Again, I really dont see where the Knights went wrong in all of this
Probably nothing.

There is hypocrisy in that they sacked a lesser player for a lesser offense - that didnt go to court. Also Bennett has long had tough stances on players doing the wrong thing (if he didnt need them TBH). I still remember his outrage at media reports when Heather pinched those beers and when the Caxton Foursome happened.

That said, Newcastle really dont have to acknowledge the victim. They are not at fault. The Victim had his day in court and the aggressor has been punished. He should have left it at that. But by going further - he is just another tool trying to make a buck out of his own misery.

As much as the ARLC needs to act tough against player misbehaviour, it also has to act tough about society extorting clubs and players.

We would too. But the Taxi Club has closed down so we wouldnt know where to find you.

BTW, please explain how social outcasts can have a wankfest. By definition, that would be classed as "social", would it not?

I reckon you are one of those 4ft 7 and 30kg lightweights with severe small mans syndrome. If you ever shared a public urinal with another man, you'd be embarrassed. makes you feel worthwhile to pretend that you are a tough genius like Packer, even though he is, in reality, a gutless genius.

555 you make me laugh. No one has tried to make out to be a tough guy , if you call not always taking other people sh!t when they are aggressive and drunk then I'm guilty as charged. And as I stated prior some people deserve a good hiding. What does amaze me is this forum is full of monks, saints and deity . My only hope in my remaining years is that 1 day before I pass I can be as good as you dear sir. You must be such an amazing man with so many friends and followers outside of cyber space. Truly remarkable qualities and I am so blessed to of stumbled upon this thread and to be able to interact with such wise and old souls who possess such inner strength ,love and wisdom. Obviously poor old Packer could learn from people such as you. And I bow to you now sir in acknowledgment of your superior character I now wish to learn from you and I hope we can be friends and you can take the time to teach me.
