it looks like a one off to me, consideing the other games are on par as with him playing 5/8th in terms of LBAs

It might be a one-off but it still came with him at fullback.

Don't forget as well that he played half those games at fullback at the start of the year when we weren't even competing every week. He shifted to half a bit after we got our shit together against Cronulla.

What, that game doesn't count?

Statistical anomaly, if you were doing a statistical analysis you would probably discount that game yes because it would unlikely fit on the p-curve.

BUT I think the point still stands, at fullback Hayne is more dangerous because he gets himself one on one more often. At the moment we do not have the halves to allow Hayne to play the fullback role but next year we will.

I'm just glad to see Soward has picked up his second linebreak assist for the season.

Screw NSW, we should pick this guy for Australia!

Interesting that Soward picked up his second LBA in a game the Dragons lost. I'm not sure which other game Soward picked up his first LBA, maybe PouPou can tell us. But at best this means the Dragons have a 50% winning ratio when Soward gets an LBA. Maybe there is a connection between a Soward LBA and the Dragons losing.

You're assuming the mean performance is the only one we're interested in.

The fact is that when it comes to footy players, and especially their potential, the player's best performance (what they are capable of over 80 minutes) is as important as their average performance (what they're capable of over a season or other extended period).

This is why Ben Roberts is such an exciting prospect. His best is much better than that of the average player, which means there is something there to be harnessed by the coaching staff.

Likewise, Jarryd's best performances have all come at fullback, both as a playmaker and as a support runner.

irrespective of whether you are looking for a mean, mode or median normally you would remove outliers in a statistical analysis, So no I don't think it matters.

Either way i think that statistical analysis is void in this case because Hayne has rarely played fullback this year even when in the #1 jersey. Most of his play in the line has been similar, possibly earlier in the year for the first 6-8 games he was playing a more traditional fullback but was still the main go to man when we looked to push the point.

But we're not necessarily looking for any of these. We're looking at his performances as a group.

This is where statistics become meaningless - when they're looked at as a purely academic exercise. When you talk about removing outliers, you're essentially saying we should disregard his best playmaking performance. It might make sense in statistical theory, but it's f**king stupid when we're discussing a footballer.

Otherwise I agree that his LBAs shouldn't matter, because his best season came in 2009 when he had 30+ linebreaks but less than 10 LBAs. He should be running the ball next year, because he does it better than anyone in the game.

I agree, Hayne is not a natural playmaker and while he can do it it nonetheless diminishes him, he will never be a great playmaker and there will always be better than him. The talent that he has which can't be equalled is the running game he displayed in 09 and pushing him into a playmaking role has reduced his effectiveness. There are better playmakers but there are no better line breaking runners.
