If there are cap issues, there can only have been a few players originally in receipt of over the top payments- Farah, Lawrence, Tedesco & Blair- with Blair gone WT would pick up part of this years salary as his parting good bye. I suspect where we may have fallen in deep do-do was with the extension of contracts for the potential up and comers Brooks and Moses where this was happening at the time other clubs were sniffing around. Result? WT pay way too much $$$ in the out-years for 2 x spine players who real NRL experience remains negligible but have received extra salary to fend off the other clubs interest.

So probably now we have Farah, Lawrence, Tedesco, Brooks & Moses on very good money plus, probably Woods too, would be getting extra funding top ups by his SOO and Australian squad promotion. If true, some of these top earners will have to be squeezed out soon.

As sad as it may be, Farah and Lawrence, might be the least problematical for WT to shop out and free up some $$$ for general recruitment as they have obvious replacements in the club now.

Having been a Balmain supporter prior to the merge (but always a keen Magpie follower) I can't remember either team in the last forty years or so producing a top line 1/2. I know Wests had Lamb come through as a 5/8 but most of his best football was at the dogs.

I guess my question or thoughts are; why is it we can never produce top line 1/2 or 5/8's in our system? Both Brooks and Moses were seen as our saviours having played together as kids and supposedly knowing each others game. Well, these guys may come good but I am having serious doubts.

When you look at the Broncos and where Hunt was a few years ago, he is a half that has kicked on. Yes, I know there are many factors like "yeah, their forwards go forward" and all the like but if I am going to be constructive in my comments I'd like to know why this club can't seem to get a dominant half.

Anyway....

Oh yeah....Tommy. Sorry about that.

Halfback is very specialised and not many make the grade.

Tommy R was more a backrower that could had vision to direct and pass(mixed with the mongrel of a tough, backrower) than the traditional halfback but it worked for the Maggies in the 70's.

Balmain- wasnt Freeman a good 1/2?

I think in many ways the story could be the same now. Sheens wasnt totally wrong in the Morris for halfback debacle. Depending on team strengths and dynamics you dont necessarily need the halfback to be 'born and raised' a halfback. Where Sheens f'ed up was that Morris didnt have the vision that is needed to direct plays that so necessary with the job. Tommy R could do it, John Morris couldnt.

John Morris in the forwards was good, as a half- crap.
Tommy R as a forward, good. Tommy R as a half- good (with the Magpie line up that we had). EDIT- Note he had a good 5/8 to support him- Rowles mostly EDIT- and O'Grady too- how could I forget him. (the mists of time no doubt)

Freeman was a decent half, but the fact he always played behind awesome forward packs almost everywhere he went (at club and rep level) certainly made his job a damn sight easier.

On skill alone, I'd rate Scott Gale ahead of whiz.

I didn't include Freeman as he was a Kiwi and we didn't develop him, we bought him. Yeah, Gale was pretty good but I wan't sure of his background. He was actually across both the Maggies and Tigers from memory.

I guess my rant was that we can't develop a good half. I remember Manly always seemed to have good halves coming through (and if they didn't they bought them) so my question was why couldn't we have at least one standout half in 30 years....of international standard.

I know with Tommy he was a different breed. He'd play prop if asked and done a good job. I think back to the 80's and the likes of Mortimer and Sterling, we just couldn't breed one like this.

Not that it matters I guess. It must be quiet at work and I have nothing better to do!!!!

I think Simona and Nofa need to be moved back to the wing.

Simona in particular can be a devastating kick returner.

We have two gun centes coming through the ranks who I am supremely confident will make the step to NRL

I have no issues with SImona and Nofo being in the centres however I think they are really good on the wings as well.

Who are the gun centres coming through ? I really think we need some quality outside backs.

Nofa definitely - his defence a man in is pretty dicey, not helped by his lack of a constant run of games in the new position.
Simona is every bit a centre IMO - looks to have lost a bit of pace in bulking up. Another that's struggled with injuries this year, but he's looked pretty good when given a run of games.

I have no problem with Nofo in the centres in attack but in defence he is terrible, maybe the short term fix is to swap him and Kev durring the game is our only option for now.

Simona is a gun in the centres in both attack and defence. I do think that he can play equally well on the wing and Nofo, Tedesco and Simona returning the ball is a great combination.

Nofo's defence is terrible.

I hope they stripped of their spoons :)
And lose their 2015 points and help prevent us from getting one.

if the Eels don't get hit with point loss then I think we might get the spoon. the run home for the bottom 4 teams.

Wests Tigers adamant they are on track for top four NRL finish in 2017

Adrian Proszenko
Published: July 25, 2015 - 2:57PM

Wests Tigers chair Marina Go is adamant the club can still achieve their lofty goal of becoming entrenched in the top four within three years despite the latest loss all but consigning the joint venture to its first wooden spoon.

The merged outfit recently released its three-year strategic plan for the period to 2017, with a raft of targets for performance on and off the field. Those included the ambition of making the top four and having 12 local juniors in the current squad, although the 16-page document went public before the Tigers discovered the full extent of its salary cap dramas. The club is over the limit for next year after years of rostering mismanagement, although the release of Keith Galloway to take up a three-year deal with Leeds in the Super League will provide some relief.

A string of losses, the latest to the Roosters on Friday night, have left the Tigers on the bottom rung of the ladder and will make their commercial goals of boosting membership and attendance even more difficult to achieve. However, Go is confident the club can emerge from a difficult period to fulfil all of its publicly stated objectives, including playing finals football in 2017.

"Yes, we believe we can still get there," Go said.

"We believe we have some of the best young talent in the game, everyone tells us that, we believe it and we are committed to that. We have great faith in our players. I know it's challenging because of where we sit on the ladder it is difficult for our members. Of course we want to go out there every week and win. We're also taking the long game with this.

"That's why [coach] Jason [Taylor] is committed to sticking with the team he's got because, if not, we won't have that winning team in three years, which is when we expect to have it.

"We are not wavering, we're not moving from our position of believing where we can get to. We believe in the group, we believe in our coach and we believe in where the business is heading.

"We always knew the first year was going to be tough and it has been. We were up for it and we're not afraid of [the challenge].

"We honestly believe in the future of these young guys. We want to make the finals in 2017, absolutely."

Complicating the cap issue is the fact that boom halves Luke Brooks and Mitchell Moses are effectively free agents from November 1. The pair are signed until the end of 2017 but the final year of their contract is an option in their favour. They are entitled to $600,000 each in their final season should they exercise the option, with the big salaries an indication of the size of the gamble the Tigers have taken on them maturing into established playmakers.

While the political infighting between joint-venture partners Balmain and Western Suburbs is a thing of the past, there is still a leadership void at Wests Tigers. The club is yet to settle on a chief executive officer to replace Grant Mayer, with a shortlist of candidates expected to be prepared by the end of the week.

"The candidates have been amazing, it's really encouraging to see the quality of people who want to run our club," Go said.

"It's clearly a good brand and an opportunity a lot of people want and it's testament to the brand, the club and everyone who went before us."

Taylor said he was hopeful of negotiating releases for more players in coming weeks to alleviate salary cap pressures.

"[Galloway's departure] does help us with our salary cap issues," Taylor told Triple M. "Hopefully a bit more of that can happen between now and the end of the year."

Who? Rabbits? Joey? Some other media tarts? FMD:crazy:

Seriously, I feel like giving up and finding some other team to support after reading that load of crap. She talks about the team like it's a retail business with a temporary sales problem.

Moses will be on $600K in 2017 if he chooses to stay. They were so blinded by his fairytale that they couldn't see Blake Austin was already there and could achieve twice as much THIS YEAR on half the pay.
