one Englishman in the starting XI today...

Ignoring injuries, it should be three. Possibly four if you count Frimpong. As well as one Welshman.

Only managed to see the first half of the game, was on the cans since about midday and watching the game in bed backfired.

That volley though, wow. Was worthy of Thierry applause.

Song really has played on a whole new level lately. Our midfield really is starting to gel, and not to mention we'll have a sort of January signing in Wilshere. I don't think Gotze/Hazard/Shaqiri is what we really need. Although I obviously wouldn't complain if do get someone like that I'll be ok if we don't. We're not crying out for a midfielder/winger. We need two things which should be a bigger priority in the transfer window. A dependable backup at GK, Almunia/Fabianski on the bench scares me. And even more importantly, we need another source of goals. We set up plenty of oppurtunities but we miss out far too often and against the top teams it will cost us. A Podoloski or a Reus is what we need more than a Gotze or a Hazard.

It astounds me how much Gervinho misses sitters?? He lets so many opportunities go to waste. His lead up play is awesome (most of the time). Can't finish though.

I think another RVP level striker is a necessity. I also still think we could do with another creative midfielder and a defensive midfielder (M'Villa would be awesome, we are screwed if Song gets injured). If one of Arteta or Ramsey go down. Rosicky, or Diaby won't be able to fill the void at all. I know Wilshere is there.. but we are still very fragile with depth.

Does anyone know how long till Sagna gets back? And I saw Verm went off early in the match yesterday. Precautionary or is he f**ken injured again?

Gervinho's finishing will come good. He scored 15 last year in the league, granted the french league is soft, but i'm expecting him to be ok before the seasons end. It's all about confidence. I think 10 is a realistic target for him and Theo.

You make it sound like there are other strikers at RVP's level elsewhere. What he's doing right now hasn't been done in years. Aside from Messi and Ronaldo there aren't many others that are at his level. Cavani and Gomez maybe (there would be more out there but cbf thinking). But we won't be getting either. We just need someone that can come in and finish off moves. We are linked with Podolski who can play striker, and he's probably one of the better forward players that will be moving teams, if he does, in the Jan window.

I can't see us going for M'Villa again, Rennes will be asking for too much again and considering how well Song is going we won't be breaking any records to bring in a player to start out on the bench. We missed out big by not making a move for Scott Parker imo.

Vermaelen's injury was from the Fellaini elbow wasn't it? So it'll be a head knock. Should be sweet for next week. Was definitely just precaution i'd say(hope).

The main reason I'm a little more optimistic than usual that we'll actually spend the money we have for once:

http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/tra...ersie-a-Real-Madrid-target-article841758.html

Senior Arsenal *officials are confident Van Persie will extend his stay if manager Arsene Wenger brings in a cluster of high-profile signings, with the capture of Borussia Dortmund’s exciting youngster Mario Gotze his priority.
Spending 30 million on a player like Gotze and another 15 or so on a player like Podolski won't just be buying those players. Those millions will essentially go towards signing RVP as well.

If Wenger doesn't think Gotze (or any player) is worth 30m, does he think Gotze + RVP are worth 30m? That's why I'm more hopeful of us playing a significant part in the next window.

Can't argue with any of the sentiments already expressed. Another CM is a must, even though Cameroon aren't a the CON, as much as I like Frimpong and Coquelin, they aren't dependable enough if Song does become injured. I think Rosicky will most likely be back in the Bundesliga by the end of the calendar year as well.

Here's an idea to solve our striker depth problem : Sign Thierry on loan until the MLS season starts - exactly what Everton did with Donovan.

Gotze out until the winter break.

Con: Injury makes it less likely he'll move right now.

Pro: If we do show initiative and still go hard at him in January this injury might just be the thing that keeps him in our price range and/or reduces competition for him.

The talk on telly last Satruday was of Henry playing for you guys again in January.

Would normally ignore, but it was Keown who said it.

Given our history over the past two seasons with Sol and Jens, it's not the most ridiculous rumour you'll hear.

Makes perfect sense though. A gap-filler until Arsene can bring in someone permanently. Chamakh's confidence is lingering somewhere around November 2010, and Park hasn't played yet in the league, despite it being December.

Playing Theo or Arshavin up front is the only plausible option.

As close as you'll ever get to optimistic quotes coming from Wenger regarding transfers:

‘We can afford to buy if we want to buy’

"The situation, I must say, is a bit special. Economically the whole environment has changed and people suffer more. The clubs will suffer more financially and it's much more difficult.

"Maybe we will have some opportunities because we are in a good financial situation."

The fact that we've largely kept our powder dry in recent windows, and the question of RVP's extension hanging in the air, I'm cautiously optimistic about significant purchases in January.

Watching arsenal vs city from last year. Boy fabregas and nasri can make even arshavin and chamakh look good. I know its not good to dwell, but fab and nasri with our other signings and we win the epl.

TBH, I don't miss Nasri. Towards the end he simply wasn't playing at a consistently high level. He showed up some games, and some he didn't.

Now Fabregas is a different story.

Nasri isn't a huge loss overall. Way too inconsistent... had a spell of good form but it didn't last too long.

I prefer Arteta, at least he always puts in 100%, and he's a lot more solid.

Totally agree re Nasri.

Also, it was nice to see Clichy being skinned over and over again by Sturridge the other night.

It is impressive that three of those top four clubs are in the top four-five, but I guess it is a big indicator of the difference in squad depth between the bigger and smaller clubs.

Podolski played as a striker today against FCB. He was substituted not long after the hour, 30 mins after Ribéry was sent off  I didn't realise he was on the pitch until he was substituted

Zero shots

Big signing for Arsenlol
