LU - Greatest Guitar Player Ever

Thought we might get a series of polls for the modern users. I think this was done in the past.
I was thinking of getting a thread together for each instrument, then putting it to a poll. We've got punk fans, metal fans, fans of everything on the board.

So, who is the best guitar player ever?

Surely Kurt Cobain isn't considered a guitarist?

A moody twat, maybe. But a guitarist?

"Greatest Guitar Player Ever" is too hard a poll. Certain distinctions must be made in terms of technique, talent, song-writing and innovation.

Jimmy Page ticks all of the above.

When I think about guitarists the ones that I admire most are;

Dave Alvin, Billy Zoom, Vernon Reid, Chris Cheney, Page Hamilton and Brian Setzer.

I'd have to go with EVH.

Notable mentions:
Paul Gilbert
Randy Rhoads
Yngwie Malmsteen
Jimmy Page
Steve Vai

Hard to compare guitarists in bands with 'classical' guitarists like Malmsteen though.

gonna nominate a few of my modern day favs in Malmsteen, Satch and Petrucci. i'm not really a guitar muso, though... just an appreciater of music in general... so my opinion probably counts for very little amongst the elite.

Massive nominations so far.
I'll throw the two classic Maiden guitarists in Smith and Murray.
Brian May and Richie Blackmore too.

SRV, Duane Allman, BB King, Clapton..... harder to pick than a broken nose however.

Even though he is a country artist Brad Paisley, whilst known more for his singing is quite an accomplished guitarist. Certainly not in the Top 5 but better than a lot considered as 'guitarists'.

I'm also a big fan of Chet Atkins.

That's pretty close to it mate.

I doubt there are any guitarists as technically competent as Vai although some have suggested he lacks feel. Personally I think his Sex and Religion album puts that argument to rest.

EVH is of course a God and has one of the most distinct sounds of all time.

Lol @ Hendrix. Certainy was brilliant for his time though.
