I rate him.

me personally I like
Dave Gilmour....nobody else does what he does... as good.
Moginie and Rotsey...great combo. Unique sound . check out their new stuff http://www.thebreak.net.au/media.html surf guitar stuff.

I never really got into all that EVH stuff ...I get how good they all are but I would rather listen to a good song than a intricate guitar solo.

Subjective stuff

Though I am a massive page fan twenty five minute blues solos is just wankery

I think may in the studio created fantastic orchestrations but was hit and miss uber the spot light often suffering from too much overdrive

George benson had great speed and technique but I like rock

Gilmour though not a fast player constructed well thought out solos with great attention to the sound and could do it all again on stage

I reckon Phil Emmanuel was better...if it wasnt for the booze.

ha so true, i met him when i was about 14? he had just released the Kakadoo Sunrise album, he was pissed as a fart and couldn't even hold onto his pick.

In saying that though, he was miles better then Phil, but because his style wasn't seen as mature he like many other guitarists was discriminated.

Back to the topic

1. Eddie Van Halen - he needs no introduction, totally transformed the instrument

2. Stevie Vai - an Eddie Protegee, however imbecible technically

3. Slash - The guy has come up with the most incredible rifs and solos, and just keeps doing it, when you think of the most amazing solos and riffs you think slash straight away

On another note, Hendrix was absolute sh*t, listen to his live stuff, disgusting stuff, and if anything he should be seen as a guy that almost destroyed the instrument, all he had was dress sense and funny mouth expressions when playing, that's it.

I also love Brian Mays work, but funnily enough, my favourite stuff of his was his later work with Queen, for eg I want it all - amazing guitar in that song.

Hendrix. Without him, guitar playing would be very different today IMO

absolute bullsh*t it would, he was flamboyant and that's it, his guitar playing if you listen to it is techincally sh*thouse, and he could hardly keep in tune live

technically sh*thouse ?

what exactly does that mean, other than he never played chords

he had his own style and just because he didn't play chords and wasn't conventional like all your glam rock bands isn't a bad thing

he was years ahead of anyone else at the time and he was an original and had a unique sound

and as far as not keeping a tune, if you had that much drugs and alcohol in your body, you probably couldn't even stand up

I think of Clapton, Knopfler, Young...

Yes, he had a very unique sound, but he certainly wasn't years ahead of anyone else at the time. Chuck Berry, Frank Zappa, Eric Clapton etc were easily as influential, and probably more talented.

Rather than mention the regulars that other people have posted, I'll give an honourable mention to, Jeff Wootton who would have to be the best guitarist under the age of 30. Check out his myspace site, some of his riffs are just mad.
