I always preferred Toki.

It's so subjective. People like Morello have invented entire new ways to play and sounds yet probably isn't as technical as Vai and co.
Such a hard question.
I cant believe she's converted you.I'm gonna throw Matt Bellamy into the mix. Most of Muse's music is reasonably understated but live he throws down some ridiculous solos
I reckon Phil Emmanuel was better...if it wasnt for the booze.Slash, and Joe Satriani are pretty special.
Dont laugh but, I am a bit of a fan of Tommy Emmanual tbh. Always thought he was pretty handy on the axe.
preferred phil over tommy.I reckon Phil Emmanuel was better...if it wasnt for the booze.
The good old haunt of the Cockroaches. tracks at Epping. Also Gladesville Hotel regularly had the Emmanuel bros, Mal Eastick band.preferred phil over tommy.
went to see tommy at "tracks" in epping(was a day or 2 after stevie ray vaughan was killed) and both phil and mal eastick got up and jammed some srv stuff. was great but depressing at the same time.
used to see the emmanuel bros and mal eastick regularly on the "tracks", "patricks"(pennant hills), gladesville hotel, bridge hotel(rozelle) and various venues in parra circuit.this was the late 80's, early 90's university piss drinking years. The good old haunt of the Cockroaches. tracks at Epping. Also Gladesville Hotel regularly had the Emmanuel bros, Mal Eastick band.
In my opinion, My Faves are (no particular order)
Tommy Iommi
Angus Young - when you plug an SG directly into a Marshall Stack with no effects, and you sound like that, you can play.
Randy Rhodes
Blackmore
Gilmour
Petrucci
Brian May
Kirk Hammett
Lukather
Clapton
Slash
hendrix
Knoffler
Kenny Wayne Shepard - only had a couple of hits on radio in Australia but this kid can play
Stevie Ray Vaughn - Blues on Steroids
Gary Moore
Jimmy Page
Simon Binks
Billy Thorpe
BB King
Mick Marrs
Sambora - teh early stuff was a little one dimensional, but as he ages his playing has matured.
Santana
Satriani
Albert King - I love my blues too much
Eddie VH
Vito Bratto - White Lion's very underatted virtuoso.
CC Deville - Poison's lead guitarist is actually classically trained and can play some serious chops.
And here's something really funny. A Mate of mine once played a track from a former big name band member's first solo project. Blew me away, and here's the funny part:
Melon:"Who the f**k is that!!??"
Melon's Mate:" Taylor"
Melon:" Taylor? Taylor Who?"
melon's Mate: "Andy Taylor"
melon: "andy Taylor?"
melon's Mate:" Yep...."
Melon: " Andy Duran f**king Duran Taylor???!!!!!!"
Melon's mate: " u-hu...."
Melon: "f**k off....."
melon's mate: " Andy Taylor dude...."
Melon: " Well f**k me...."
Special Mention, dont Laugh. The Edge. OK he cant play for sh*t. But he IS the master of the effects rack.
Guys that are severely over rated as guitarists:
Kurt Cobain (over rated as a song writer too).
Dave Grohl (better drummer)
Steve Stevens ( ex Billy Idol)
Stone Gossard (love pearl Jam - just dont think Stone is that great)
Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood - look the dudes wrote and played some of the best riffs around. I just dont think they were great players. Defintely good - but slightly over rated due to the riffs they wrote.
Another Brian May fan here. Great tone and originality. I'll chuck in a Nuno Bettencourt for good measure as well.
You know I didnt click onto Vai. Sure he was a great player, but I didnt get into him. Same with Vandenberg ...sort o ftried to get him...didnt.Oh f**k I forgot Nuno!!!
Flight of the Wounded Bumblebee is epic.
Oh and melon, great list but needs more Steve Vai.
