I don't know, that is why I listed various possible returns and the Vanguard fund's actual return.

Jarome still has the post career opportunities available to him. His club career is already better than every non Storm TV personality (and Lockyer).

You're acting like if he leaves the Panthers he'll be unemployable once he finishes playing.

Mason was as disliked as Jarome when playing and is doing alright being the edgy podcast host. Luai can easily do that sort of thing. He won't stop being a legend to the Samoan community.

It isn't because he is leaving us that makes him unemployable. It is going to a shit team, He can be unlikeable in a good team because the results are there.

4 years of mediocrity + him being unlikeable is the issue. Different story if he was going to the Roosters or hell even Raiders with the media in their pocket.

He ( along with Latrell ) are the players that cop it most from media and fans.

He is ( likely ) going to the club that is in the same boat

So put him up against To'o for those same Samoan dollars and it is a landside victory to To'o. Particularly if Tigers stay where they are and he is just another player

No matter where he goes Jerome won't have many post career opportunities media wise. He loves to play the bad guy
Was just about to post the same thing. Right or wrong he just isn't that guy. There are only so many high paying media gigs around.

If he was to go down the podcast route where he played wont matter anyway.

Also I've seen rep bonuses come up as incentive to stay. He is a lock for Samoa whilever fit for the next 7 years if he wants it. And no certainty for the Blues even if he stays, you could argue that he is a better shot if he did become the main an somewhere else.

Finals bonuses? Are they even a thing for anyone above minimum?

I don't know...I think viewers are getting tired of the same robotic talking heads offered up year after year. At some point, broadcasters are going to realise the dynamics need to change and (god forbid) they might look to do something outside the box.

An example is the way NBA coverage and panels have improved by the inclusion of ex-players not afraid to give their own spin. Someone like Jarome being introduced would liven things up a fair bit and drive some new viewership (even just to tune in to hate on the "bad guy").

Finals bonuses may not be in contracts but for exposure for personal sponsors.

Think of it this way, There is the same amount of journos but they have less teams/players so it gives those left more profile

Did anyone tune in to 360 when that tool Kent was on it?

100% has Gal and Gus 2 polarising people and ratings don't follow.

I agree the media will change but guys like Wade Graham and co will see more air time as they are less offensive

American sports pundits are as authentic as the WWE yet there are still idiots who don't realise it's an act. A well cultivated caricature created to match public expectations of their personality.

Ridiculous hot takes drive engagement.

The sports media cycle is 24/7. Jarome has the brains and work ethic to carve out a two hour niche each week to get people talking.

You're proving the point. Anyone tuning in to watch Kent or Hoops is beyond help. Gallen, Gus & Wado are just more of the same. Hence the ratings dive.

None of them engender where the true league-loving populace come from (yes, Wado is from Western Sydney...a long time ago). US media identified this some years ago - Luai is in a unique position to leverage his profile should the RL media identify that their ratings base needs to shift from Sydney's eastern suburbs.

I can't see that being anywhere near the value of the contact differences. Beer money at best in comparison.

Not if that continues post career.

Take Luai wearing the Bluebet hat in GF week.

If he adds that same beer money for say 10 years post career.

For sake of the discussion. Say it earns $50k extra.

They pay the same for online game streaming or in a podcast. There is $500k just there

Yes but wouldn't say To'o tick all those same boxes?

Is likeable, has a more successful career.

That is the thing, The ex player pool is large and growing every year. There are plenty of options for tv execs

With the flak he cops I doubt Luai pursues big media like fox/nine post career.

Podcast seems up his alley if anything. Run his own ship.

Which you need sponsors for. Either way being unlikeable in a shit team will hurt post footy

Or take the 500k over 2 guaranteed now. Then the extra 500 for the following 2. All without lifting a finger extra and getting an additional 4 weeks off a year.

He already has 3 more rings than most blokes will ever see, so it's not like he needs to chase that.

I don't think money will be enough. 200k is $106k after tax. $8,833 a month. Over four years it's a small flat in Penrith. It sounds a lot if you are on a low wage, but $850k a year is a good salary and the extra will not change his life style. He will lose winning bonuses for finals appearances and rep bonuses won't be coming at the Tigers.

Do you get more third party sponsorship in a winning side or as the main man in the wooden spooners? "Hi, I'm Jerome Luai and I can highly recommend this beer, Triple Wooden Spoon Pilsner. It tastes great and is extra strong. When you want to forget losing every week and numb the pain, drink Triple Wooden Spoon Pilsner, you know it makes sense".

Four years of losing for $8k a month. Your body getting smashed up in a side on the back foot. Commute to work, lifelong friends left behind. A political back office, a board in constant turmoil. A rookie coach. Where do I sign, it sounds awesome.
Yet I can't help but wonder how much Ivan's ill informed (IMO) comments about being THE playmaker (can't recall exactly what he said) are influencing Luai's decision.
