25 years ago guys like Luke Burt and even Steve Turner would've played for Australia, just good reliable players with a good football brain and have all the fundamentals down pat, unfortunately in this era if you're Burt and Turner's size you need elite level speed, footwork and acceleration, and they just don't have it. If they were maybe 10cm and 10kg bigger then sure they'd be fine but when outside backs these days look like Manu Vatuvei, Aku Uate, Israel Folau, Greg Inglis, Jarryd Hayne, etc guys like Turner and Burt just don't compare very favourably

One of the most underrated players of the modern era.

He has an x-factor about him that means he produces class touches that you wouldn't think he was capable of, if he didn't do it often. What he is is a footballer. Not an athlete. Not a giant. But a footballer. It's nice that there is still a few of them around.

This.

Of course, what you're saying is 100% spot on. But I don't think its a good thing.

Such are the facts of professional sport though.

Never had any time for him. Thought he was a merkin of the highest order after he pulled a penalty try for putting on a performance any soccer player would be proud of after taking a very soft knee to the arse from Bryce Gibbs.

And it's a shame. These days you see absolute nuffies with no footy skills crack it at first grade just because they're big enough.

Stuffed up twice tonight I thought:
1. Didn't move across for Yow Yeh's try when him and another player had come across for Hodges
2. Was way too deep for Wallace's try and they capitalised on this.
Can't really blame him as he's a winger not a fullback and I don't think Hayne would have made the same mistakes.

He's a reliable player, sometimes he's a strong player. But you don't get much more from him these days.

I don't think he's problematic for the Eels, but at the same time I agree with another member who said he's on borrowed time. Retirement or SL looming, you'd expect.

Not fair to single him out, though. I like him.

In saying that I'm not sure who you can blame for the Eels when they're in poor form, because it's difficult to honestly say where the problem area is, let alone a single problem player.

The Eels have some meh players but then so have some of the better teams in the league the last few years. The Storm and the Dragons have broken records for having shit players amongst their ranks, but it works.

Not to say that I think Burt is shit, mind. Instead I happen to think the Eels have something wrong about them. I'm not smart enough to say what it is, but I think we can rule out that Burt is the problem, can't we?

The Eels just don't seem to have much, their whole attacking structure has been poor for the last 2 seasons. Whenever they have the ball it feels like they're treading mud. As if they're on a treadmill, they try but don't seem to go anywhere.

I happen to like the Eels, so I'm not trying to shit on them for the sake of shitting on them. I'm just perplexed by how bad they seem to play, considering they've not got the worst crop of players, and Kearney is supposed to be a decent coach.

I'd love to hear what Paramatta fans think is the specific problem, if there is one.

Eels are just a bottom 4 side with Burt at the back or not. Hayne won't make that change when they have Sandow running the show.
Burt should be only a winger and give another young guy a shot as their season will be very long and once again will feel bad for Hindmarsh.Moi Moi as they are the only good players the eels got without Hayne

Not a fan but have been following them last year & will this year to see how they go because I'm interested to see how/if kearney can turn them around. You picked up the last 2 seasons & you're right...Kearney inherited the problem & I think he is trying to instil the kind of structures that will fix it. Totally agree they look like they go nowhere - they defend Hindmarsh a lot because he's a club icon but from fresh eyes & perspective he just seems like a wet rag when he hits the line - slow, no intensity & no real effect - makes a lot of tackles but you need go-forward so your team can have a platform & that seems to be missing,The broncos scored their first try because 2 came up out of the defensive line which left only 2 to slide & cover& they were never gonna get there...after that the eels lost the plot a bit - noone on the paddock to regather them & take control. The newbies add something but it all has to gel & soon & imo the tired guys need to be put out to pasture at some point. Don't know if Kearney has the depth to do that.

Can't believe I'm going to say this but here goes... The Eels looked much better with Ben Roberts on the field. He is usually a genuine nuffy but he was playing well last night. Once he went off the pressure was all on Sandow and he couldn't handle it. The eels structure fell apart and they couldn't recover from there. With Roberts on the field they looked composed and had options on both sides, once he went off they just kept shoveling the ball sideways, looking for someone to do something with it.

The Broncos zero'd in on Sandow because Parra lost their other kicking option and he couldn't get a decent kick away so the Eels started on the back foot defensively and the Broncos strangled them from there. With both halves on and the addition of Hayne parra should look better in coming weeks.
