Manly, Penrith throw big money at Todd Carney (& NOW DOGS AS WELL)

This is a dog act from Carney. The club stood by him and this is how he repays them.

And please don't trot out the 'player has to look after himself and his family' rubbish. He hasn't earned that right with his pork chop behaviour.

The other clubs also need to have a look at themselves for offering this guy 400k, given his off field track record. I agree with the poster that says that it does nothing but encourage players to think they're above the laws of the game.

spot on.

real shame if he leaves canberra after all the loyalty they have shown him

its so hard for that club to attract players and then when they develop someone other clubs just pinch him

manly have gotten orford and bell from melbourne. perhaps if they spent money developing juniors they wouldnt have to pinch from other clubs

The Storm have hardly missed those two players though.
canberra will miss carney though.

clubs like the storm and canberra who struggle to get top quality players to them shouldnt have to have their best players pinched by clubs who should be developing their own.

its been a while since the raiders won a comp. and theve had to compete with the brumbies winning the S14 loads of times.

theyve built up a very good side and i can see them making the top 4 in the next couple of years

honestly they can keep him at that price Penrith have a heap of talent coming through at half if we pay that much for carney we'll lose them

Im almost banking on it
If i were don Furner, id push Todd Carney's price to the absolute limit of penrith, let penrith have him and then throw a motza at Wade Graham
Ive been saying it for 12 months, Wade Graham is the best young halves talent ive EVER seen.

and get SMASHED but melbourne... I know this will probably sound like sour grapes, but i dont think id handle a GF lose to well at all, id much rather not make it then make it and lose... gutting stuff tbh, really felt for manly fans, it was over by halftime imo

If there's one thing I've noticed about Des Hasler since he came to the helm, it's that he is more than capable of learning from his mistakes and improving the next time that challenge is faced. It's just a matter of getting their again.

I think a guy like Brett Stewart would love running off Carney. And that's probably worth 100k alone...

Mate Carney could make Stewart look like an out and out star, and in return with Stewarts speed and footwork, he wouldnt let carneys good work go to waste either... i can certainly understand why manly are chasing him

Orford isnt a halves arsehole when it comes to the crunch.

He's spectacular when:

a) there's no pressure; &
b) When the Forward pack is all over the opposition.

But I think he's proven time and again in important finals matches and when he's a moral for Origin selection, that when it comes to the clutch he has serious issues. I can't be bothered defending him anymore until he proves everyone wrong. He's got the skills of a premiership winning half but a pea sized heart.

A guy like Carney would fit in well. Ballin and Carney at 7 & 9 would look great long term.

There's no doubting he'd be an utter dog for leaving Canberra however.

Bingo, he's been an awesome club player week to week since his melbourne days but abit like brett finch, when pressure is applied he cracks big time.

I think he's worth every cent these clubs are throwing at him.

If you can't see that the bloke's gonna be a superstar, then you're not watching very hard, if at all.

Manly will soon have four players in the top 1% in the game if Carney signs:

Million-dollar man
John Greco
29 February 2008

AUSTRALIAN fullback Brett Stewart is set to sign a long-term deal with the Sea Eagles which will see him join the leading money earners in the game.

The rugby league cleanskin is close to signing a deal worth $1.5 million to $1.75 million over four years.

The Manly Daily understands Stewart is on the verge of re-signing, possibly over the weekend.

Third party arrangements and "special conditions" within his contract and final approval by the NRL are delaying the Wollongong junior signing the lucrative deal. Stewart's manager George Mimis confirmed with the Daily last night the deal would see Stewart be among the "top one per cent" earners in rugby league.

"We have put a lot of work into this and are still negotiating," Mimis said.

"It's been frustrating, but it (the contract) would put him in the top one per cent of the game." Mimis said it would be "highly unlikely" if the deal fell through after months of negotiations. "It's highly unlikely, but you never say never," he said.

Manly CEO Grant Mayer said Stewart's off-field marketability increases his value.

"He's future is massive," Mayer said on the eve of tonight's NRL trial between Manly and the Warriors in Caloundra.

"He's a cleanskin and popular with everyone. He's been a tremendous asset to the club, on and off the field and a genuine role model for the game. Whenever you read about footballers misbehaving, you can rest assured Brett Stewart is tucked up in bed."

Stewart will not play in tonight's trial against the Warriors as he continues to recover from off-season knee surgery.

Sea Eagles coach Des Hasler indicated hookers Matt Ballin and Heath L'Estrange would get similar game time as they both push for the starting role in the season opener against the Sharks.

"Both of them have been training really well and it's going to be a tough choice," Hasler said.

"It's our last dress rehearsal before the comp starts and there's still a few combinations we have to work on."

Only Stewart and New Zealand centre Steve Matai will miss tonight's trial as they recover from surgery.

Prop Jason King and five-eighth Jamie Lyon will play after missing the Melbourne game a fortnight ago through suspension.

But the question Christmas ape, is how much do you pay for potential?
At this stage TC is only that, if he lives up to the hype he'll be worth 400k and more, but considering he is only potential and wayward potential at that, how much is he really worth now...

i guess the answer to that is what ever a club is willing to pay for him...

the term "choker" was coined for the sole purpose of describing people like orford. i've waited and waited and waited to see him get the monkey off his back... but continuously, when push comes to shove.. he goes missing and crumbles.

it's a shame, because he's always had the skill.

Sorry to derail the thread, but just out of curiosity, would you say he has to win a Grand Final to not be a choker?

I thought he did well in the GF qualifier and played all over Thurston - a pretty high pressure game if you ask me.

i'd just like to see some consistancy from him in big game situations. i've always rated orford as a playmaker - and i'm not trying to have a dig at him.. it's just a fact that you can't trust him under pressure. if he could come out and play blinders in a few big games this year... where the forwards are equally matched and it's an important 2 points.. or equivalent.. i'd be a lot more confidant in his ability.

it's the only thing that has kept him from a blues jersey imo.

Orford is a good player but he does seem to go missing. In the Cows game we dominated their forwards so Orford was ok then but if it was a tight battle he probably would have struggled to get us over the line.
