Australia's Mark Webber must win the Formula One season's final race in Abu Dhabi on Sunday and hope Fernando Alonso finishes no better than third if he is to claim the world title.

Webber's Red Bull teammate Sebastian Vettel boosted his challenge when he led Webber home in a 1-2 finish at the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Webber's Title Equation in Abu Dhabi

  • Webber wins and current leader Fernando Alonso finishes no higher than third.
  • Webber is second, his Red Bull teammate Sebastian Vettel does not win and Alonso finishes no higher than sixth.
  • Webber is third, Vettel does not win and Alonso finishes no higher than seventh.
  • Webber is fourth, Vettel does not win and Alonso finishes no higher than ninth.
  • Webber is fifth, Vettel does not finish first or second and Alonso finishes no higher than 10th.

Formula One World Championship

1. Fernando Alonso (ESP) 246
2. Mark Webber (AUS) 238
3. Sebastian Vettel (GER) 231
4. Lewis Hamilton (ENG) 222
5. Jenson Button (ENG) 199
6. Felipe Massa (BRA) 143
7. Nico Rosberg (GER) 130
8. Robert Kubica (POL) 126
9. Michael Schumacher (GER) 72
10. Rubens Barrichello (BRA) 47

Their success in Sao Paulo on Sunday confirmed Red Bull as the 2010 constructors' champions, but left the drivers' title race wide open with both drivers still fighting to take the crown from leader and two-times champion Spaniard Fernando Alonso.
Alonso finished a steady third for Ferrari ahead of the 2008 champion Briton Lewis Button while last year's champion and McLaren team-mate Jenson Button was fifth.

The result left Alonso with an eight-point lead from Webber, meaning the Spaniard can claim the title by essentially sticking to the tail of his championship pursuer.
Should Alonso fail to finish, Webber will only need to finish fifth to claim enough points for overall victory.
Webber was realistic about his own place, but happy for the team.
"Most of these races are decided on Saturday or on the opening lap and that's the way it is," he said.
"Seb drove a good race and won it and fair play to him. But I am really stoked for the guys back in Milton Keynes."
Alonso said: "I lost my chance to challenge these guys at the start when it took me some time to catch them and I lost 12 seconds.
"But overall we did what we wanted to do and now we go to Abu Dhabi and see who wins the title. Congratulations, of course, to Red Bull."
Hamilton was downcast. Although he has a mathematical chance to take the title, he said: "I was nowhere. We had nothing. You can't win if your car isn't fast enough."
Button, who lost his hopes of retaining his title, said: "It was fun and I guess it was a good way to lose a title to come home like that."
German Nico Rosberg came home sixth for Mercedes ahead of his team-mate seven-times champion Michael Schumacher and another German Nico Hulkenberg, who had started from his maiden pole position for the Williams team.
Pole Robert Kubica was ninth for Renault and Japanese Kamui Kobayashi 10th for Sauber on a rare racing day in Brazil when the drivers title was not resolved. It will now be decided in the final race of the year in Abu Dhabi next Sunday.
Alonso will fly in for that event with 246 points, a lead of eight points at the head of the championship ahead of Webber on 238 and the rapid Vettel on 231.
Hamilton has just 222 points in fourth and needs a near-miraculous set of results in the final race to grab the title while Button, on 199, cannot keep his crown. A win is worth 25 points.
In the constructors' title race, Red Bull have 469 point and second placed McLaren have 421, a position that delighted the team and their paddock supporters.

I am quietly confident Mark Webber can bring this home for Australia and I do believe Seb Vettell will help him out seeing Red Bull win their first Driver's Championship to go along with their Constructer's Title.

Red Bull were strong in Abu Dhabi last season, I see both Red Bull's dominating qualifying. Last season they were 2nd and 3rd on the grid though they finished 1 and 2 at race completion. If this results and barring no techincal difficulties, Mark Webber on his own or by being allowed to slip past Seb, will win the World Title.

As a long time motor sport fan and some would describe me a "F1 Nut", it's been with regret to see some right off our man for the World Title. Webber has made it a lot harder than he should have with some mixed performances and timely errors, though he is right in this and I believe best placed to win the World Title.

Bring it home Mark!

easily done, vetell to 'accidentely' take on Alonso on the first corner. but knowing red bull they will probably get webber to take out Alonso to let Vetell win.

See what the problem is though is if Alonso has issues with his car and doesnt score any points Vettle wins and Webber finishes second Vettel will win the title.. So i think they will tell Vettel to go out and try for the win...

Christian Horner has already said it is in the best interest for the team that Vettel does his part for Mark Webber if he can not win but they won't be ordering him to do so the way Ferrari have for years and years and Vettel dropped the same hint when saying they both know how to act. Webber just has to win and let the rest happen but really Ferrari winning would be a blight on the year after their orders to let Alonso through.

As mentioned before, Abu Dhabi is a track that suits the Red Bulls to a tee. All Webber has to worry about doing is sticking it on the front row of the grid (which he's not had much trouble doing all year) and let Seb run defence for him.

How crucial is that seven points Massa gave Alonso looking? And conversely, how many have the Red Bulls dropped?

This should have been wrapped up 3 races ago if Alonso ends up winning then RBR can't blame the orders Ferrari gave they have to blame themselves.

If Mark doesn't win the title, it will only be his own fault. Webber dropped the ball a couple times at key moments and it's cost him dearly this season. This title should be his. The same can be said for Seb. Converting pole positions to more wins would have put him in a much stronger position with Ferrari and Alonso doing the chasing.

Seb crashing into Webber in Turkey didn't help things however. I've been a fan of Mark's since way back in 1995 when he was driving Formula Fords, this year marks 30 years since an Aussie last won the F1 title, it's about time Mark's name joins Alan and Sir Jack's on the honour roll!

Mark Webber is a wanker. My name's Mark Webber and I'm going to get famous in one of the most exotic sports in the world so I can settle down with someone who could pass as my mum. She is gross. It looks like he has beaten her with every one of his 6 pole positions. I also remember him giving an interview where he said in reference to Vettel, "I won't go as far to say he's a good guy." For that, I hope Vettel wins. It's not like Webber won't be able to take losing on that chin anyway.

Posting whilst pissed doesn't read as funny the morning after.

10/10 for the attempt

1/10 for execution

I wouldn't say gone Deacon, though the mountain to climb for Webber just became steeper and he will need some luck, a lot of luck.

1. Fernando Alonso's last two laps showed what the difference between a World Champion and a very good driver is. Those two laps (one to get another shot at his last lap before Q time expired and two the actual lap where he knew he had to get ahead of Webber) are a perfect illustration of why some guys just carry that swagger whilst others don't have it. Alonso dragged that Ferrari past Webber. Outstanding.

It also showed the gap in talent between the likeable Massa and Alonso.

2. Mark Webber when under pressure faltered. Again. It's been a theme in his career at crucial points in his own timeline. I said it before, Webber only has himself to blame if he doesn't win the World Title.

3. Seb Vettel looks every part a World Champion. There is no doubt that he will one day wear the crown, it may just be tomorrow but like Webber, he has it all to do and it will be hard to keep out the confident, unflappable Spaniard.

4. Michael Schumacher has looked liked the Schumi of old since Brawn came out and gave him a mini rev up re: his performance. Schumacher has been strong at the back end of the season and he got another one over the extremely talented Nico Rosberg who has had his measure this season.

Webber only has himself to blame?

Well to a point you're right but his "team" certainly hasn't helped his chances.

You may have a point if Vettel was out of contention, though he has been, so your point is void.

If Red Bull enforced team orders, there will be the same people blowing up that it cheapens the title. I applaud Red Bull for not enforcing any team orders given both of their driver's were and ARE still in the championship hunt. In fact, it's refreshing to see how Horner has handled this all season long. More power to him. More of it please.

Fact remains Webber was in prime position to take this out of the hands of any rival or for some, his team. Webber failed in that respect and has it all to do now.

I applaud the young German who has just crushed the final part of the season with Alonso. Vettel is a future World Champion and ate this up, Webber didn't and therein lies the difference.

Yet through all this, Webber has always been ahead of Vettel. There's the flaw in YOUR argument.

Flaw?

Nice way to ignore the small fact that Sebastian Vettel has never been mathematically out of the hunt for the Driver's World Title. This is the point I made, but again, ignore that. Red Bull and everyone but you it seems acknowledge this and their decision to not give preference to Webber is justified as we sit here this afternoon.

I am a Mark Webber fan, though I won't sugar coat the fact that Mark Webber's biggest enemy in closing this out was Mark Webber. Webber's a very good driver, just don't apply the great tag to him.

Well done Vettell. Best driver this year in the best car. Can't argue with that.

Nice little "gesture" by Alonso to Petrov on the slowing down lap. Did he think Petrov was Massa and would let him past or something?
