https://au.sports.yahoo.com/league/...hs-trash-rlwc-statues-assault-security-guard/

Who says Melburnians don't know the value of rugby league?

Over the weekend a large group of youths set their sights on the city's major Rugby League World Cup (RLWC) showpiece: the League of Giants, 14 huge statues representing each of the competing nations.

Standing at around three metres tall and dressed in full kit, the illuminated figures have been set up at Queensberry Square, right in the centre of the popular Southbank precinct.

On Saturday night a security officer keeping watch over the site was confronted by around 15 drunken young men.

The group tore the shorts off all 14 statues and also the jersey from the USA figure, which was also trashed and punctured in numerous places.

In trying to prevent the attack the security guard was also allegedly assaulted and suffered minor injuries.

7th Tackle has been told that the rampage only ceased when police intervened.

CCTV footage is currently being reviewed.

The damage caused a major headache for RLWC organisers, who needed to replace the giant shorts and USA jersey in time for last night's photo opportunity with the Kangaroos and England squads.

They got the job done, but not without a large degree of stress.
Just as well the statues weren't coloured...

RUGBY LEAGUE ALL STARS FEATURE IN OPENING CEREMONY

A who’s who of rugby league will feature as part of the Opening Ceremony for the Rugby League World Cup Opening Ceremony on Friday night at Melbourne Stadium.

In celebrating the 14 nations from across the globe set to contest the Rugby League World Cup, rugby league royalty including Jonathan Thurston (Australia), Petero Civoniceva (Fiji), Ruben Wiki (New Zealand), Hazem El Masri (Lebanon) and Garry Schofield OBE (England) are among those that will carry their country’s flags.
The Opening Ceremony will be held in Melbourne as the curtain raiser to the first game, Australia v England, and will celebrate the world’s best converging for the 2017 Rugby League World Cup, through the stories of the different cultures, different countries and different tribes that make up the players and fans participating in the Tournament.

Headlining the entertainment will be homegrown talent Casey Donovan, one of the country’s most versatile indigenous entertainers. The youngest ever winner of Australian Idol at 16 years old, Donovan will be joined by performers and traditional dancers representing the three host nations – Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.

RLWC 2017 CEO, Andrew Hill, said the opening ceremony is all about celebrating the world’s best coming together to enjoy the game they all love, rugby league.

“IT’S GREAT TO HAVE SO MANY RUGBY LEAGUE ICONS REPRESENTING ALL 14 NATIONS AS PART OF THE OPENING CEREMONY OF THE RUGBY LEAGUE WORLD CUP.
“We are so pleased to have each country represented by a past player and/or coach that has a genuine connection to that country.

“We are proud to have Australian talent such as Casey Donovan along with performers from our host nations Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea, celebrating the host nations, teams, players and fans that all make the Rugby League World Cup such a unique Tournament,” he said.

The pre-game show will also celebrate the grassroots connection of the game with children from Victorian Rugby League junior clubs walking hand in hand with the country ambassadors. Each junior player will walk out with a player from a country that has a connection to their own family.

RUGBY LEAGUE WORLD CUP TO HOST AUSTRALIA’S FIRST FERIA PARTY

The Rugby League World Cup 2017 kicks off in Canberra on Sunday October 29, 2017 with the France v Lebanon match which will also feature Australia’s first ever Feria party.

Feria parties take place every year in southern France, the traditional heartland of French Rugby League and are colourful, raucous parties that celebrate summer in outdoor bars.
A key feature is Feria dance music, drinking sangria and the traditional dress is a white shirt with a red scarf.

RUGBY LEAGUE WORLD CUP FRANCE COMMUNITY AMBASSADOR LULLA DEMEULE SAID: “WE ARE THRILLED TO HOST AUSTRALIA’S FIRST FERIA PARTY AND IT'S A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR THE WIDER COMMUNITY TO SAMPLE A FUN PART OF FRENCH CULTURE. ”
The Feria party will take place at the Southern Food Court inside Canberra Stadium starting when gates open at 2PM.

The Feria Party will feature Sangria at the Slab Bar and entertainment from the French community including DJ Dr Mendez and the ‘Bandas’ Canberra Brass Orchestra.

Lebanese Community entertainment will be provided by Zaffe traditional drumming group.

The Pool A match between France and Lebanon is a crucial match for both teams and the victor is likely to progress to the quarter finals in Hamilton New Zealand. Tournament heavyweights Australia and England are also in Pool A and the top 3 of 4 teams will progress to the quarter finals.

The match is an intriguing one as traditional Rugby League power France is ranked 5th in the world but Lebanon have 7 NRL stars available including Parramatta’s Tim Mannah, South Sydney’s Robbie Farah, Canterbury Bankstown’s Michael Lichaa and Parramatta’s Mitchell Moses.

Was at the annual Britfest festival in perth yesterday. Must be at least 7-8k Brits go along for a taste of all things British. I emailed the RLWC org a couple of months ago encouraging them to use it as a promotion opportunity for the Perth double header. Even offered to voluntarily hand out flyers. No reply and surprise surprise no sign of them there. I guess they think UK people will just somehow know that 3 home nations teams are playing here on Nov 12th?

Posters up in Liverpool today for Fiji vs Italy. That’s the first local advertising I have seen for a game not involving Lebanon.

I saw those in the CBD as well. Was weird. Exact same posters that the NRL use.

To try to get Fijians and Italians in Sydney to go, given that's where most Fijian and Italian Australians live.

The bigger question is why not play it there then?

NSW gov stumped up no cash. Canberra obviously did. At the end of the day it makes sense, except I doubt many spend a cent whilst in Canberra, if they even venture into the centre.

I understand the logic of places bidding for games, but seeing the low crowds I'm starting to worry about some of the fixtures coming up.

Pricing and lack of engagement with local communities I reckon have been the main reason.
