Marketing and promotion

We've all criticised the promotion at various times, with fans apparently not knowing games are on in their city.

Complaints typically go like this
"I haven't seen any advertising, except for a few token billboards and emails and TV ads and newspaper articles"

So what are they meant to do? If RL fans are intent on living in a bubble and deliberately ignoring anything except their own team, how do you reach them?

I don't believe for a minute you can be a RL fan in a hosting city and not know that there is a world cup on and when the game in your city is. Its BS, there has been enough promotion for RL fans to know. Why they cant be arsed to go is another matter.

Exactly.
More and more I'm noticing people who claim to be fans of the sport making up bs excuse after bs excuse for not showing any support past their loungeroom. When one falls down, another pops up in it's place.

TBF most of these so called fans cant even be bothered going to watch their own club unless it is a GF so I guess we shouldn't be surprised at their lack of commitment to a world cup.

RLWC banners up along the roads in Brisbane now.

Saw these. Then facepalmed when i realized they don't have any fixture dates on them or the words "semi-final" or "final".

They are p*ss poor compared to the banners up for the first ashes test.

There are 2 parts of marketing and promotion, awareness and engagement. IMO we have done a poor job at both. Sure most RL fans have probably heard at some point that there is a World Cup happening but is that enough to get people to come along?

When I talk to my friends who are all league fans there seems to be little awareness about who is playing and when and where they're playing. Part of it is general disinterest and part of it is the lack of promotion. Sure at some point they've heard about it but that's not enough.

That's where engagement comes in. SOO is the biggest sporting event in Australia basically. Everyone knows when it's on and it's guaranteed to pull monster ratings and crowds. Yet it gets a 12 month running promotion in essence and the big marketing starts ramping up as much as 4-5 months in advance. That's because you need to keep fans engaged and reminding them about events.

These matches are involving teams NRL fans don't typically follow so you need to give them a reason to go. Just hearing that a match is being played isn't enough. Where are the TV ads and the big promotions? Why aren't we showcasing some of the incredible stuff on display particularly from the pacific island teams? You need to make this feel like an event and simply put that's not what the RLWC feels like.

Add to that the poor scheduling, expensive tickets for good seats, the weird ticketing system where seats are randomly taken on and off sale and the overall lack of interest in International league because we never actually play any and not you've got a stew going.

The RLWC is an event trying to establish itself, it's not the NRL GF where everyone will watch regardless. We need more promotion and marketing to engage the fan base. This is where a little involvement from the NRL would be wonderful but because 9 and fox didn't get he rights the NRL coverage all but shafted the RLWC. The hands off approach from the NRL didn't help either.

A caveat mention that Channel 7 have been excellent! And tv ratings have been the same.

Surely the tv audience numbers would suggest plenty of people know the games are on? Or are people just by channel flicking and by chance finding games on ch7?

Given how sht rl fans are at getting mg out of their armchairs the really important marketing needed to be to the general public. Sadly the marketing company seemed to have no idea how to do this. I've mentioned before the britfest day they could have marketed at here, there is about 20 English pubs in Perth they could have partnered with, everyweekend there is a britpop cover band playing somewhere in Perth. Plenty of opportunities to target uk expats, but alas nothing.
Also we have 3500 registered players they could have targeted easily.

I think that new NRL Live/Watch NRL/whatever its called will revolutionise how the NRL connects with fans...

They will be able to track accounts and specialise marketing/discount offers directly to the relevant fans. Marketing will be amazingly cheap and probably super effective.

Take my family for example. Huge family everyone loves their Rugby League every family function we have talk always turns to nrl teams who signed with who certain teams chances next season etc.

So last week when the footy talk was on I decided to bring up the World Cup and everyone switched off and exited the room or changed the subject.Only one nephew showed enough interest to want to go to the Australia v Lebanon everyone else either laughed or didn’t even engage in the conversation. These are rusted on supporters.

Same. My family have followed RL since before I was born. All dyed in the wool fans. All members etc

I rang up to talk with them on the Saturday of the first weekend and mentioned the PNG game on later that weekend. They were surprised the WC had started and hadn't even thought to watch the opener.

My family is similar. Frankly a lot of it is because the NRL, media and pretty well everyone involved in the game don't respect it. There are no regular internationals to actually get people interested. This just feels like a random international tournament rather than being part of a wider international schedule.

The fans shouldn't be blamed for this (though it would be nice if our more hardcore fans got involved). It's up to the people running he game to engage the fans.

Attracting current fans is fine and hasnt been done well in OZ however the casual /neutral fan is the real bonus as it gains greater awareness and support of this great code.

Why is origin so popular? Because the nrl people in media talk about it constantly. They hype it up, they convince public perception that it is something special and a must see event. T becomes a self fulfilling prophecy to the point where even states that have no buy in daw big audiences and strong interest. Until those people take their responsibilities to the game seriously and talk up international RL the same it will never be big.

Doesn't help when the games own governing body treats it with such disdain though. Smith as union man knew full well how important he international game is to reach beyond traditional fan bases and no surprise in his brief tenure he put the kangaroos jersey up as the pinnacle of the sport.

Smith was also very aware of the lack of rugby league in the elite private schools and noted that this was an obstacle for rugby league growth in the big picture! This game is great for all demographics!

Given their previous track record over the last 20 years I doubt the NRL could hype up anything successfully, even Origin..

I don't buy this "manufactured hype" argument...

Origin is popular because it's a bitter rivalry that has built up over the course of your life and you hate losing to the other team... I hated losing Origin when I was a kid, and 30 years later still I hate losing..

I also like the fact that I can watch the game with my Manly/Canterbury/Roosters supporting mates and we can go for the same team against the same bitter rival...Every year my mates have a reunion and get together to watch either Game 1 or 2 ( whichever is the non Sydney game)

I compare this to the prospects of Aust in this WC..I'll be watching the games but it isn't the same...

It must be hard as a Pom to understand I guess...

That makes sense if your from nsw or qland but how do you account for the large interest and ratings from other states and countries? It's hype that creates that.

And as a Pom, that's been around a while, I remember the same hype between GB and Australia and attending games with 70,000 there

It's called cultural relevance! Thats the secret to genuine popularity. This is earnt and created over years of existence and significance within a community. It doesnt grow on trees. Mind you a very attractive code like rugby league can easily gain such relevance if it works proactively and respectfully.
