Everything happens in cycles, ATM QLD are fielding a golden generation of players but I think NSW will be in a similar position in a few years. Once players like Sims, Fifita, James, Hoppa, Cordner, Idris, Loko, McKinnon, Dwyer, James Roberts, Jacob Miller, Kyle Stanley, etc mature abit more I think NSW will be a force again. If you look at that generation of players born between say 1983 and 1987, you can begin to understand why Qld have been so successful. Slater, Thurston, Smith, Inglis, Boyd, Scott, Hannant, Thaiday, Myles, Costigan, Tonga, Shillington, Cronk, , etc all born within a few years of each other, I doubt Qld will ever produce so many superstars in a 4 or 5 year period for a long, long time. Look at players born between say 88 and 92, NSW look like they have a bright future IMO.

that was well thought through. i agree with most, but we seem to find a jack reed or a matt gillett who slip thru the junior net but eventually rise to the top. 2008 there was a list of top 50 teenage players in a mag called RL world. that would make them born 89 or after. folau and mitchell pearce headed it. qld still had enough talent on that list of 50 to match the nsw players in it. each year of the nyc, the best of the comp has been evenly spread across both states, imo.

This is about depth. Is Dane Nielson better than any of the backs I mentioned ?

in just his two origin games he has been defensively safe. he has offered nothing in attack. we haven't needed him to, really. the series is still in the balance and our two gun centres are back fit. he may still play wing instead of yoh yeh, if you can believe meninga in today's paper. defensively at this level i would have him ahead of jennings, both morris, croker, and ferguson.

That's true about Reed and Gillett, I think it's a case of them slipping through the net at the Broncos and then flying under the radar at a Qld cup side, if they were based in SYdney they wouldn't slip through the net so easily because there are quite a few clubs who they could try to get a gig with.
As for the next generation of players, I think on paper NSW have a big advantage, players born in 88 or after.

Qld
Barba
Yow Yeh
Reed
Vidot?
Copley
DCE
Sandow
Kennedy
Friend
Dodds
Taylor
Gillett
Ridge

NSW
Dugan
Hayne
Jennings
Idris
Hopoate
Stanley
Pearce
Mannah
King
Merrin
Sims
Dwyer
Fensom

James
Tolman
Fifita
Cordner

Ferguson
Coote
Loko
Edwards
Grant
Kelly
Leilua
Buhrer
Oldfield
K Gordan
Gardner
T Williams
Symonds
Lawrence
Woods
Etc

I can barely name 1 team of Qlders in that age bracket, within the same age bracket there are about 50 NSW players who are of rep potential

add matt srama, junior vai vai, mccullough, ben hunt, and josh maguire to your qld list. i agree the nsw list is more prolific but our established qld players in that 22-26yo bracket will still be around another 5-8 years

Depth has never been a real issue for NSW.
This domination QLD has had, all through it NSW chopped and changed players....the ability to do that means they have heaps of depth.

It's more about quality over quantity, and sticking with a player...giving him a decent chance, which means allow for stuff ups to happen.
Thurston had pressure from Prince for quite a while, and I'll definitely agree that Prince looked in far better form some years.
NSW have only just started doing this and it's of no surprise that they are looking at a possible series win.

Yeah I think this 'golden generation' of queenslanders is a product of the team selection. The coaching staff showed faith in players like thaiday, costigan, myles, harrison and the players actually believed they were rep-standard (when at times their club form probably suggested otherwise). Unlike say peter wallace and farah... who have suffered pretty long-term form drops since getting overlooked.
So I dont really buy into the fact that they were lucky to have 5 year window in the 80's where Qld mums were popping out ready-made origin stars.

In 5 years time the spine will be a shadow of it's former self if they're still around. I suspect Boyd will be the new fullback the rest of the key positions will be a lottery, Slater, Cronk, Thurston and Smith will all be 33, Hodges 34, Hannant 32, etc. IMO Qld will become like the Australian cricket team and will struggle to replace so many great players all at the same time.

I do agree though Qld do have hooker well and truly covered for the next decade between Friend, Hunt, McCullough, Srama and Baptiste, however there isn't much in the way of forwards

That is a fairly good point who know what standard of footy players like Farah, Campese, J Morris and others could be playing at if they were given the same faith as Smith Slater and Thurstan

so in 5 years, post smith, qld should be right at 9 and one of them or barba could develop into the bench cronk role.
7 may be DCE or sandow unless an 18yo steps into grade over the next 2 years and makes his name.
forward replacements may come from gillett, hala, maguire, frei, some young cowboys gun, billy rogers, pat o'hanlon [on just one game, lol] or maybe korbin sims [was he in qld at the right age to qualify?]

Maroons have the greatest depth where it really counts. Almost every newpaper, magazine, media outlet and supporter gets wholeheartedly behind their team and accept it without drama.

Blues players on the other hand are burdened with being pilloried left, right and centre from people in their own State. That and NSW selection politics . . . no wonder I'm a traitor.

Agreed. In saying, I was really impressed by their turn out for Game 2 and the way Blues fans are slowly turning it around.

As for this thread, it's good to see the days of having bland utility players back up as five eigths is over and we actually have some players we can call onto do a job. With that said, NSW are on the upswing and we're about to fall down.

It's only a matter of this year or next.

Yeah, so why haven't Queensland won every single series :?

And if you're a NSWelshman supporting the rednecks you're worse than us so called fickle fans

Billy Rogers won't be a footballer in 5 years time, Hala isn't anything special IMO, and Sims and POH are unproven (infact Sims hasn't even look that good in NYC). Compare that to the likes of Fifita, Merrin, Tariq Sims, Aaron Woods, Boyd Cordner, Ryan James, Simon Dwyer, etc

If you breathe while reading it will give you time to absorb.

Qld supporters, selectors and media in general are committed to supporting their rugby league team unreservedly.

If they went about it the same way NSW do they indeed would be lucky to win a series.

I'm an Australian who supports any team that supports camaradrie, efficiency and above all ability.

Unfortunately, there is only one state team that exhibits those traits so my choice is limited.

But, as I say, when NSW catches on, I can go back to supporting good footy.

with any luck Hunt and McCullough won't even be in first grade much longer ... so please don't put them in the rep basket

Oink !
