Basically if you want a quick black belt Taekwondo is the way to go, they practically hand them out at most dojos.

Even if you find a good dojo Taekwondo is very limited by nature.

if you want the best self defence (not for sport) you need to go to japan and learn from Masaaki Hatsumi himself, this is the closest thing you will get to Ninjutsu.

While going to Japan and becoming a Ninja has been a lifelong dream of mine (I'm serious) that's a pretty silly thing to day, you want the best in most training than you need to go to where it originated from. Fact is there are some decent dojos which can teach you self defence hear but due to the commercialisation of Martial Arts in recent years a lot of what is on offer is crap.

every system has something to offer even TKD its up to the individual to make techniques learned applicable in realistic situations through diligent hard work, apply the JKD concept of discarding what you find doesn't work for you and perfecting what does,.we all have different attributes that can be applicable for self defence situations eg agility, low centre of gravity, long reach therefore the approach for each range of combat(long, middle, close, weapon) will differ

Most of these places in the west are McDojos and laughed at. Like Karate in the MA world. Look at the grading system in most disciplines, everything is fast tracked.

And don't get me started on 'online black belts' now being sold by GJJ..

Sad thing is, most dojos in the west are run by ego driven teachers who lack the morals to be a good teacher.

I wouldn't piss on western MA training if it was on fire.

There's still some decent ones if you look had enough. Most of those people weren't trained in Australia though and don't have western background.

It is a real shame that good instructors are so hard to find though.

Slight over generalisation if you ask me. That may be the case in other MA but BJJ has some very high class instructors and current competing champions (mostly originally from Brazil but currently living in Australia)

At the gym I go to (Gracie Barra) there is no fast tracking of anything.
Regardless of your skill level, you do not get a promotion until you post the time on the mats required to get to the next stripe/belt. And sometimes they make you wait longer than when you are due a promotion to test you determination to get to the next level adn to see if you are actually ready for the next step.

No Im on the Northern Beaches so I go to the Sydney HQ gym in Brookvale.

All the gym you mentioned all teach Gracie Jiu Jitsu...I dont think there is a Gracie Barra in Marrickville or anywhere in the Inner city or east, the closet one from there would be in Kirrawee, or out west...Fred Carvallo runsthe Kirrawee gym who is a Black Belt under Marcelo Rezende (Marcelo basically oversee's Gracie Barra in Australia and is head instructor at Gracie Barra Brookvale)

Roots has a solid BJJ program, they have a lot of students who compete at BJJ comps and they are quite successful, cant remember who their head instructor is, I think it might be Paulo Guimaraes.

Gracie Barra is good in the sense that its like a school, you have a uniform and a set program each week, that the instructors keep to. It really is a lot of fun and 99% of the guys you roll with are great guys who are happy to give you pointers.

Yeah the one I was thinking of in Marrickville is Gracie Oceania.

Im on the lower north shore right now so Roots is the most easily accesible at North Sydney and Neutral Bay. And yeah, Paulo Guimaraes is the head of their organisation here.

Was talking to one of the trainers at Gracie Alexandria and he didnt seem to have a very high opinion of a lot of the other bjj gyms out there.

Barra sounds good too though, might be worth a look into.

There is a Langes MMA gym in Artarmon but I havent heard the greatest things on the BJJ @ Langes...they are good for MMA but if its purely BJJ, then I would stick to Gracie Barra, Oceania and Roots.

All of them do a first lesson free so I would give it a crack at all 3 and see which one best suits.

Not sure why the trainer would have a problem with any other gyms, other than the obvious competition it has with his gym...most programs are fairly good, but I chose Gracie Barra because of the facilities, the instructors who are very handy current competitors in most major BJJ competitions and a friendly atmosphere.

Had the chance a few months back to roll with Flavio Almeida, brother of Ricardo Almeida (Former UFC Middleweight fighter) who is a 2 stripe Black Belt under Carlos Gracie Jr. Not many other schools can offer the same sort of opportunity to roll with a silver medalist from the Abu Dhabi submission wrestling championships (he was beaten by Demien Maia in the final)

I'd look for a GB and be wary of other gracie dojo's. Alot of GJJ is fast tracked and offer internet belts LOL. Helio would do a 360 in his grave if he knew what alot of the gracie family was doing.

My advice, check out who the instructor at the gym is and do some research.

So I'm going to check out my first session of Jiu-Jitsu on Monday night. The Instructor runs two sessions, one of the Traditional form then the Brazilian variety.

I'll stick around and decide with his advice which will be best suited to my needs. Greatly looking forward to it, for many reasons. One of which will be the variety it adds to my fitness regime. It will also be quite daunting, as no doubt there will be some experienced people in the classes.

But if I've learned anything in my time it is beneficial to be around wise people. I'll let you mob know how it goes.

whats the traditional and brazilian variety?
I've never come across a place that offers something like that, usually its either just gi or no-gi

Well I attended the lessons last week and it was very good.

As to the difference, it seems that the Traditional class is defensive techniques dealing with hand and weapon strikes, whilst the Brazilian class is more grappling focused with moves on the ground. The Instructor told me he's getting more young blokes to the second class as they all want to be MMA fighters. But for my needs the defensive techniques are perfect. It was a well structured class from a newcomers perspective.

Hope this brief explanation helps. There may be more learned people on the forum know more.

Just had my first roll at Gracie Humaita in Ingleburn. Small little gym run by William almeida. Great bunch of guys and were amazingly accommodating for someone who's never rolled a second of his life. Loved every second of it.
