Lachlan Galvin has been axed by the Wests Tigers for their Easter Monday clash against Parramatta.
The wantaway five-eighth will play in the NSW Cup at Lidcombe Oval on Monday, just down the road from a packed CommBank Stadium where the Tigers – and new No.6 Adam Doueihi – will clash with Parramatta and possibly Mitchell Moses, who has been named to return from a foot injury two weeks ahead of schedule.
Sources with knowledge of the situation not authorised to speak publicly confirmed to this masthead a couple of senior Tigers suggested to coach Benji Marshall that Galvin be dropped, especially if he was of the belief his game could not improve under the coach.
Galvin’s management told the Tigers on Monday they were not interested in any extension from the Tigers beyond 2026, and how they were not certain Marshall was the best coach to extract the best from the 19-year-old local junior.
The Tigers responded quickly – and very publicly – by declaring the 19-year-old would be leaving at the end of next season.
Now they have dumped him to reserve grade, with the immediate focus on whether Galvin sees out the season, let alone his current deal.
How the club handles the Galvin situation could impact their ability to retain 19-year-old dummy-half Tallyn Da Silva, who is one of his best mates, with the pair winning a Harold Matthews premiership together with the Magpies in 2022.
Latu Fainu remains unavailable because of a broken thumb, which has paved the way for Doueihi to play in the halves alongside Jarome Luai.
A former Tiger who hails from the Campbelltown region, like Galvin, is Sydney Roosters captain James Tedesco, who was asked about the drama at his former club on Tuesday.
Tedesco said of Galvin, “I feel like he should be the future of the club,” and that he only hoped Isaac Moses and those in the young playmaker’s corner looked after him.
“It’s very important to have support staff and friends and family around you – it’s not easy,” Tedesco told reporters.
“You don’t know anything when you’re that age so you’re just doing your best.
“I just hope he’s well guided because there is going to be a lot of interest in him because he’s a great young player who has shown that in his short career. It’ll be interesting to see how it all plays out.”
An NRL player at another Sydney club walked past the press pack on Tuesday and commented about Galvin, revealing how he would happily pack the youngster’s bags if he could not pledge his long-term future to his coach and teammates.
Adam Doueihi has been named in the halves after Lachlan Galvin said he would not extend his deal with the club, while Parramatta welcome back their star halfback.
