Merrin asks for release

Yeah sounds like the go:

2GB DJ to his mates:
"Hey, you wanna see something funny - just watch the League Unlimited Dragons forum go into meltdown after I spin some crap on air this afternoon"

2GB DJ on air:
"....Trent Merrin has asked for a release from the Dragons....."

Dragons Forum implodes

There is nothing anywhere about it and you could probably easily take the next step to suggest this based on what is in the media at the moment (Trent asking for big money, the interviews etc).

Yep, his comments came at a launch for next year's 9's when asked about the Brett Morris situation. He expressed some concern at not having his future settled & the media have poured gasoline on that spark.

If Saints are stalling to give him an upgrade over cash and then he hears that they have offered Packer 1mil, I would be pretty pi$$ed as well. I would rather Merrin than Packer anyday.

Have Saints come out and admitted the Packer offer? Or is it just the media?

I agree Slippery Morris.

Merrin is far better then Packer.

Though if Merrin is 800k I can't help but laugh.

The way I see it Packer is nothing more then an average NRL Player. Merrin is a quality yet below elite level. He is a perfect bench player for Origin and in my opinion below International level (capable of reaching it just not consistently).

The only reason I could see the Dragons paying close to it is they believe they can get him consistent and the forward pack without him goes from poor to arguable the worst in the comp.

So Roosters 2015 would include Origin players:
Guerra
Maloney
Pierce
Tupou
Jennings
Cordner

With players like Scheck and Friend pushing for rep honors.

And they're angling to add Merrin to that side while we apparently cannot afford to keep all of Duges Mez and Moz. I realise that theres mitigating circumstances but with such apparent lack of any balance in the NRL it gets hard not to lose faith in the game.

If of course all or any rumours are true.

Add:
Blake Ferguson - origin player (most probably will play in the near future for Roosters)
Roger TS - Kiwi International
Frank Paul - Kiwi International
JWH - Kiwi International
SKD - Kiwi International
Sam Moa - Kiwi International

and as you said Jake Friend soon to be QLD origin hooker. So that's about half the top 25 players either origin, NZ or Australian reps. Not a bad effort.

Whoa whoa whoa, happy to stand corrected here but isn't the Packer offer reportedly over 3 years? Please tell me there is no report of a mill a season.
By contrast, Trent wants $800K a season doesn't he?
Why would he be pissed off with the club pursuing a signing for a mill over 3 years? What, they can't sign anyone else now until they placate him first?
I pray he isn't that stupid or selfish.

reported packer offer is a little in excess of 1 million over 3 seasons... something like 350k a season.

Cheers, as I thought. Given that we would hopefully be moving some lesser impact forward on to fund this (I didn't mention Hunt or Harrison) it shouldn't enter into Merrin's considerations at all.

Point is Merrin wants an upgrade to his already contracted 2015 deal as part of the negotiations. The club is entitled to stand firm on this if it feels it doesn't have the leeway to accommodate it without jeopardising other potential signings, or, if it places problematic pressure on the cap. Moz wants the same. There is only so much cake to go around.

Lol at the number of players wanting upgrades to contracts they have already signed unless there are special conditions in the contract we don't know of. Imagine clubs negotiating down a players contract price for being out of form, there would be an outrage.....

But after winning the GF the last three years running it was only to be expected that they would want upgrades :p

The year that Merrin gets released to go to Roosters will be the year i get kicked out of SFS for throwing maggot-ridden tomatos at him from the stands.

I agree with those who have said that no player has the right to hold the club to ransom for a pay rise when:

A. They are already under contract for 2015.
B. The team hasn't performed to the standard expected in 2014 (+ 2013 + 2012).

Mez had a break out year in 2013 and was the stand out player in our very well beaten side. As for his 2014? At best I'll say he was equal to that of 2013 with maybe a slight improvement?

If we were to give him his rumored wanted upgrade for 2015, could he justify this with further on field improvement & extra workload? It will mean we will have no choice but to promote the likes of Fonua-Blake and Rory O'Brien (whether they are ready or not), as the money freed up by offloading the likes of Harrison, Hunt, Matthews, Groat etc will be used for his upgrade and not to buy the extra one or two experienced props we need from outside the club. This will mean taking a leadership role in the team and carrying our young/inexperienced forwards while they develop.

With Creaghs' career potentially coming to an end in the next couple of years, stepping up and carrying some extra burden now may not be a bad thing for Mez. But is he ready for it? I'm not so sure at the moment. Also, can he guarantee that he will stay injury free next season? What happens when he goes off on rep duty?

Without a doubt, the club is going to have to make some tough decisions if we are to get back to the pointy end of the competition any time soon.

It's not true the Roosters have not made any offer or has his manager contacted the Roosters regarding a possible contract. The Roosters are sticking with the current crew - it is expected that Evans and Meehan will be vying for a bench sport in 2015

Roosters pack will look something like this

JWH
Friend
Moa
Cordner
Guerra
Aubusson

Bench from
Nappa
Liu
FPN
Evans
Meehan
etc

Lol to be fair, it doesnt make sense! Replacing SBW with Merrin? They dont play anything close to the same type of game. Plus with.the forwards the Roosters have coming through, theres no need whatsoever for the Roosters to sign Merrin.

I wouldnt be surprised if this rumour was started by those on Jubilee Ave to see if the media really do get their 'facts' from there...

Don't bother, the Roosters seem to ' manage' the salary gap, that a team of mostly rep and internationals are still $100k under the cap!!!!

This is classic tactic by merrins manager. But in saying that, Merrin is not worth any more than 500. Maximum. I would be happy to let him go if he's asking stupid money.
