Yep, there's a lot of people of varying backgrounds in any community who call that place home - many of them make great contributions to that community as well!
My Mum was born in a country where english wasn't the main language...moved here when she was very little...spent most of her primary school days doing ESL (English as Second Language) classes...and ended up being an English teacher! But thats Australia for you.
I only lived in Newcastle for 3 years (in fact I've now lived up here for longer) but I do know the place a fair bit and have a bit of a connection! Don't call myself a Novocastrian by any means though of course.
I was born in Newcastle, in fact "smarter at the mater". I spent 13 of my 43 years living away from Newcastle and it would not matter where I was in the world, or Australia I would and have always considered Newcastle my home.
I love all things Newcastle and Hunter Valley, love the suburban rivalry, the town rivalry but more importantly love the commonality of being a Novocastrian.
I believe that no matter who you are, where you live if you have spent some time in the Hunter and you still consider it home and would defend it when criticised then you are truly a Novacastrian.
Like Serc, my mother came from a NESP back ground and for people you can change your location but you never change your ethnicity.....I see being a Novacastrian as being the same. The only prerequisite for me is a love of NEWCASTLE.
