Mikey's Winners' Circle

I just realised after labelling the thread title "Mikey's Winners' Circle" that I am not sure many people know and/or care that Mikey is me...Ah, well.

I just finished watching an epic show called "NFL's Greatest Games" It's basically a narrated highlights reel of the NFL's greatest matches. This episode featured Super Bowl XXXII, between the favourites (the Green Bay Packers) and the massive underdogs (the Denver Broncos).

Now, history will show that the Broncos, lead by their quarterback John Elway, won this game. But what interested me from the story was thus: John Elway, regarded as one of the NFL's true greats, played in five Super Bowls: Super Bowl XXI, Super Bowl XXII, Super Bowl XXIV, Super Bowl XXXII and Super Bowl XXXIII. He only won the last two.

John Elway's story can be paralleled to Hindy imo - they both were "getting on" by the time success came (Elway was 38 by the time he won his first Super Bowl), they were both legends of the game and huge crowd favourites. They also suffered bitter defeats before tasting success.

Now, this comforts me, personally, because I think it would be a great injustice if a legend like Hindy didn't geta Premiership before retiring. I guess what I am trying to say is that the anecdote I posted combined with our coaching and playing rosters improving dramatically over the next few seasons indicates, at least to me, that a title isn't far off.

Sorry...I know you'll all find it pretty boring, but I found it interesting. And I know NFL and NRL are totally different sports and demand different things physically and mentally from their athletes.

Have a nice day. d(' ')b

That's awesome. I never get sick of that clip.

I just found the parallels interesting and I wanted to share.:(:sarcasm:

Can't compare a forward to a quarterback, there's no comparison or similarities whatsoever.
I don't see the connection.

John Elway was reguarded as the best ever quarterback ever apparently.

Is that the masturbating Squirel in the youtube link that watches rabbits root?

I realise that, St Brett. And I am not trying to say that Hindy is the best ever.

But rather I am trying to point out that Elway, regarded as one of the greatest ever, won 2 out of 5 Super Bowls and it took him three attempts to win a ring. Hindy has already lost two Grand Finals, but the story goes to show if you can hang in there and if you're good enough, there's always hope.

I've been told that there's two sides to Hindmarsh.

At a Easter Show he was asked to be photographed with some kids and people and he huffed and said, well, if I have to.

Apparently he has his head shoved up his ass on occassions.

Like, he's an arrogant bastard apparently.

Don't approach Hindmarsh or he'll show his inner-ass.

Besides...he has British blood in him.

I think Hindmarsh, like Lockyer, is this near to retiring.

Still too much focus on tackling not enough in charging.

I have heard people go on about that sort of thing before, but I, personally, don't put much stock into it. I have also heard people say the same things about Timana Tahu and Luke Burt, and those two gentlemen are probably the greatest ambassadors for the game at our club (there's a few more, obviously).

Nice parrallel. Hope it rings true.
On the flip side Dan Marino broke all sorts of passing records, played just one Super Bowl, lost and never made it back.
Hindy's played two GF's at least. Hope he makes it to a 3rd and it's 3rd time lucky.

I remember a player said, in the 60's I think, that another up and coming player asked him "does it get annoying when people constantly ask for your autograph?" and the player replied "it gets painful when they stop asking".

Ele, i have to disgaree with you, Hindmarsh imo has always been the Bruce Smith of Rugby League, legend of the game, and lost 4 straight superbowls with the bills :(

Perhaps. The Elway comparison was fresh in my mind because of the show.

On that note, the NFL is a fantastic product, specially when they do these sort of shows. Put it this way - Super Bowl XXXII was in 1998, and the show had me on the edge of my seat - the production values were incredible: footage and audio of players on the sideline after every major play; coach cams; the narrator putting it into perspective; interviews with the players...It was great.

But back on Elway-Hindmarsh - it rang true to me because when NFL novices think of a great quarterback, they'll often say John Elway or Dan Marino. When NRL novices think of great second-rowers who played for Parramatta, they'll say Ray Price and Nathan Hindmarsh. I sincerely hope that Hindy loses the first two Grand Finals he ever plays and then wins another one or two before retiring.

Totally agree, i saw an NFL production of the Bills in relation to the city and team, it was just amazing the way it was done - actually it was a 3 part series, amazing

Actually i've found it, just a great watch regardless if you don't even like Buffalo, the way it was done, the guests everything was great.
