I can live with that, if only for the fact that Mini seems like a genuinely likeable guy while Slater's an 'orrible little merkin.

Have you met Slater in person?

I'm speaking strictly about the way they act on the field. I don't really care how nice they are off the field, how genuine can it be if on the field he stamps on faces, punches people in the back or slides in and kicks them in the face?

Not a friggin chance.

The whole 'Mini in his prime' thing is one of the biggest overstatements in discussing our game. There is no doubt it is driven by the fact Slater is highly dislike in New South Wales.

Mini was a high quality player, and for a period was the best fullback in the game. But he did not revolutionised fullback play like Slater has.

Slater is the best full back I've ever seen play.

He's got a few grubby traits in his game, though.

I hear this said a lot about Slater. Out of interest, How exactly has he revolutionised fullback play?

Don't forget he sledged Scott porter about his dead sister, that took her own life.

Slater sure is a quality merkin.

I don't see how anyone could possibly deny that Minichiello was the superior player at rep level.

In fact, it's not even close.

Slater has changed the way fullbacks play the game. How many other fullbacks save a certain try by sliding in and using their knees to stop the ball? Best thing i've ever seen Mini do is count to eleven.

No. I like Miniciello and I do think Slater has some grubby traits about him on the field. Nevertheless Mini was never as good as what Slater is/has been.

Revolutionised is a strong term no doubt, and it may or may not be appropriate.

But I've never seen an entire attack being constructed around the skills of a fullback the way it is with Slater. Combine that with his freakish ability to pull off those plays, create off his own instinct have ability to read the play like the greats, direct defenses and be deadly in defense in his own right, and you have a package like no other.

Whether you think I'm right or not about my description it does not change the fact he is a better player than Minichiello, in his prime or not.
