The whole reason for the big Sydney club membership push is because the clubs there are in financial strife and they need the extra assured income. The Qld clubs aren't in that situation. But they still get good crowds so it really makes little difference how many memberships they get. If I was a club boss I'd rather have 1,000 members and 15,000 average crowds than 8,000 members and 10,000 average crowds.

Problem is, while Brisbane might be strong, the Titans crowds will continue to fall if there is no reduction in admission prices, while the Cowboys are experiencing a worrying downward trend in both crowds and memberships.

NQ's average, by the way - 20,100 in 2007; down to 18,102 in 2008, now in 2009 it dropped to 17,309. A 3,000-per match decrease is concerning. Yeah, it's more than a lot of Syd clubs but for QLD but that's not good enough.

Yeah, I thought I got the wrong interpretation. Then again, you could've worded it better Tim.

The Cowboys have been sh*t for the last couple of years. Those figures are still pretty good. Compare those with a Sydney club that goes through a period of poor results and it would probably still stack up well. Have a look at Parra's crowds midway through last year compared to their crowds at the very end. Which bears out another reason why Sydney clubs want members - fair weather supporters. Convince a fan to sign up for the full year and it won't matter as much if the team goes sh*t. Qld clubs don't seem to have nearly as many fair weather supporters.

^^Yeah, but we tend to assume that more members equals more crowd on game day.

I still think your point was the best one - he who offers the most money gets it. Logic says that Sydney should allways prevail as they have an extra 20k ppl to play with, but then again, the fact that it would be a first Qld GF might push the ticket price so high to compensate for those 20k ANZ has over Suncorp.

stupid idea, obviously cause of the capacity but also due to the teams.

there is more likely to be sydney teams in the big one then in any other.

saints v parra in melbourne? no thanks

souths v roosters in brisbane?

dogs v titans in melb?

you get the ides...

sh*t for the fans as well if they've waited so long for their team to make the big one then having to travel interstate to see it..

Thats not true about Storms finances. It looks like the Salary cap will be raised to $6m and covered by the TV deal. New stadium with much better advertising, corporate and catering facilities along with bigger capacity, new ownership structure and so on should see them become very self sufficient.

I only hope the same is true of Newcastle in the near future. Not good for the game for them to be struggling.

Kungl's on the money with what I meant.

Saints + Souths + Canterbury = 10,704 +,10,431 + 7,973 = 29,108
Broncos + Titans + Cowboys = 12,132 + 7,814 + 4,510 = 24,456

As for assertions NSW is dragging the chain... The Cowboys and Titans' figures are absolutely pissweak. Not sure why the Cows are, maybe indifferent form? Titans is just too expensive.

Cowboys to have ~8000 season ticket holders is kick arse and only slightly less than previous years.

Crowds have dropped dramatically but that is due to poor form as discussed, but also NQ poor econmic climate.

The Broncos have never had a bad year. We will see when they struggle. Crowds dipped big time in Brisbane last year when they weren't going so good... I think they have fair weather fans, they just have never really had a rainny day.

The Cowboys are understandable. Townsville can be pretty boring, and the Cowboys are the main entertainment up there.

The Titans have done okay so far but haven't been around long enough to comment. They are still building their fan base. Their ticket prices are rediculous and can possibly drive fans away.

I think the Broncos crowd figures will dip regardless of good or bad form. We're not exactly getting the best draws to Suncorp this season.

Every one of the last 5 grand finals has featured a non-Sydney team. 2006 featured TWO non-Sydney teams. Those fans had to travel interstate.

Suck it up, league is bigger than Sydney. If it's two Sydney teams, then it makes sense for the game to be played at ANZ. Otherwise, it should be rotated between Sydney Bris and Melbourne. Reckon Victorians will ever embrace Rugby League if they have to travel to Sydney to watch their team play in a GF?

Sydney has missed out on having a team in the Grand Final only once ever. And even on that oaccasion Sydney got a crowd 30,000 bigger than what Brisbane will even get in the forseeable future. So there's no need to move it from Sydney.

If it aint broke don't fix it.

KISS (Keep it simple....)

Sydney has the following local teams.

Eels, Dogs, Roosters, Beagles, Dragons, Panthers, Rabbitohs, Sharks, Tigers.

Brisbane has the Broncos & Titans.

The other cities support one team.

And you want to encourage your supporters by moving the Grand final where?

When Melbourne plays a Grand Final away from the MCG and QLD has something that we actually may want (SOO aside) then the NRL should reconsider. Then they should put together a Constitution banning the playing of the Grand Final from any location other then Sydney for the next 99 years.

For those of you who are worried the crowds may suffer. The biggest Grand Final crowd ever, featured a Sydney side with a late uppercut and the Storm in 1999.

As for normal yearly games VIC is AFL all the way, whilst the QLD sides are still growing. If we want to develop to a bigger market, overseas may be the way to go. Union already features and with a similar game but of higher quality we may be able to attract some higher quality opposition in the next World Cup. That's if it is contested in 50 years or so.

As for the Vic's the West Coast and Sydney swans had to travel and they were smart enough to leave it at the MCG. The Lions are formerly the Bears and Fitzroy and during their purple patch they played all the GF's at the MCG.

While i don't think that it should go to Melbourne i wouldn't be laughing. If the Vic government throw a sh*tload of money at the NRL for the game and the useless turds that are the NSW gevernment do sweet bugger all as they usually do i could quite easily see the game going to Mexico. Especially after Gallop has made no secret that there's no guarantee it'll stay in Sydney.
