  • Full Metal Jacket (only the first half)
  • Flaming Star- now this is an Elvis movie, and a damn good one. No singing (much), a Western with the King playing a half-caste torn between races in times of war.
  • A couple of obvious ones. Tarantino's first two films Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. He hasn't reached such heights since although this year's effort wasn't bad.
  • As an ex-military man, FMJ struck a chord with me because the sort of bullying you see is close to what it is like. I really enjoyed it. Much better than the usual Hollywood war movie twaddle.
  • I quite like Inglourious Bastards and Django Unchained. He has had some clunkers, but what director hasn't?
  • I was brought up watching Elvis movies since my Mum was nuts about him. He must hav been so frustrated by the dross he was made to act in, when clearly he had the talent to be a good actor. King Creole, was another good Elvis movie with dramatic street cred.

In the late 50's/early 60's, wherever there was an Elvis movie on Saturday arvo, that's where we were. My Mum (now 85 and suffering worsening dementia) still has him all over her home.

Mum's and Elvis eh? I was made to go to the movies to watch "That's the Way it is", because my Dad refused to go and a married woman didn't go out on their own to the movies in those days. I was eight years old and wanted to see Planet of the Apes instead and so I sulked until it started. After about 10 minutes I realised he could sing a bit and enjoyed myself. I never admitted I was a fan until I was older, it wasn't cool to like Elvis as a teenage boy in the 70's. Punk and rock was where it was at. Thin Lizzy, Motorhead, Quo and the Sex Pistols. A denim jacket with studs and hair to my collar. I looked a right pillock.

Just went & saw Ford vs Ferrari. Pretty good movie, although not particularly historically accurate. Leo Bebee wasnt the ass he was made out to be in the movie. There is a fantastic doco on Netflix that tells the real story for those interested.

Lolita. Kubrick's film before Dr Strangelove, this could not be made today. Examines a man's infatuation with a very young girl (how young I don't think is stated, but the actress who played Lolita was 17). Things were different in 1962. It's quite uneasy viewing.
The actress, Sue Lyon, who was in fact 14 when she played Lolita, passed away aged 73 on Boxing Day, the same day I posted this.

WC Fields anyone? Big influence on Sellers.

I saw WC a few years ago in the movie If I had a Million. Also stars Gary Cooper and Charles Laughton.

A wealthy dying businessman decides to leave his money to eight complete strangers randomly selected.
The move has 8 stories and what each recipient does with the money.

The story of Road Hogs is the best of the movie, which stars WC Fields. His partner receives delivery of a new car which is ruined upon the driving it for the 1st time. She is very upset
Upon receiving their million dollars they decide to purchase about a dozen new cars with drivers following behind them. They drive around the streets looking to clear the streets of 'Road Hogs" Upon finding one they deliberately crash into the offenders car. After the crash they get into a new car and do the whole process all over again until the streets are safe.

Some of the other stories are average but the Road Hogs story is worth seeing if you like WC or like seeing bad drivers wiped out.

Just channel flicking on Foxtel, might just watch sudden Impact, you have to love the Clint Eastwood, Harry Callaghan movies. They were gold back in the day, even if a little dated now. The Taken trilogy have probably overtaken them. Showing my age again but Dirty Harry was gold back in the day.

Wife and I watched Richard Jewell yesterday. Loved it. Great movie even allowing for the fact he was an innocent man. Well worth watching.

I saw that a few months ago. A very good movie, but sad in the end.

Overtaken Dirty Harry? Not in my universe. All I will say to Liam Neeson and Taken, "A man's gotta know his limitations....".
