Well because last week I seemed to cop a bagging for never saying anything about our players (Please note I then said something about the players) I wanted to make perfectly clear to all and sundry mo opinions on the Parramatta Vs Sydney game.
Firstly, Brian Smith thanks for reading my comments Re Wagon. I don't know if any one noticed but early in the first half he ran out of the line to smash Minichiello or some other rooster, When he did he started his run 3 paces behind the defensive line and ran right past Referee Robinson to Smash the Roosters player with the ball.
In other circumstances, this would have been a penalty to the roosters but because he ran beside the referee, no penalty and an advantage to Parramatta.
On Wagon, I think Anthony Minichiello would have been having nightmares last night afraid when he woke up he would find Daniel Wagon coming to get him.
Minichiello might have been tired, but he was also beaten quite convincingly, not that the pundits or anyone apart from some Parramatta fans would even see that better yet admit it.
The Forwards, I think this is the first time I have seen Michael Vella with tackles beside his name than N Hindmarsh in a long time. He has to continue to stand up and do that again and again, I also think he got a great deal more game time. Peek is a good solid forward without being a superstar, and Person is a stubby legged rock of inspiration, just you listen via sports ears when the referee is near him when the eels are defending.
Communication is a great thing, it seems as though while the wingers messages might not be getting through to Michael Witt, the wingers are reading his play.
Come finals time, the main play in every coaches book is the bomb because it is very hard to defend against if done right. Most coaches and fans want to see their clubs win on talent and creativity, well with a lack of halves cohesion I will be happy with the bombs until the halves are ready to do something else. Next weekend the same tactic may work for us, it may not but for the last few years we have scored a huge amount of points by kicking to the wings. Lets use this to get a start in games then see if we can kick on with creativity. That is a reversal of our tactics for the back 2 3rds of 2001.
I think Langi was solid but quite.
Ashley is getting more and more confidence after a debilitating injury against the Broncos last year, Also I think he was tackled in the air on his last attacking run at the line, should have been a penalty, but hey they coughed up the ball any rate.
John Morris looks more and more like a five eight the more I watch him, his taking the ball from a makeshift dummy half and kicking was great and if he plays outside Witt next year It will be interesting to watch him running off Witt and it will be reassuring to know we have another option at the end of the set if Witt needs to catch and pass.
Luke and Sideshow were nothing short of great as the beneficiaries of Michael Witts decisions, They show more enthusiasm than a pair of snapping terriers which is all we can expect from players whose job it is to receive the ball and finish off the play.
Wade under the high ball is getting back some confidence but it would be nice if he wasn't smashed all the time once he took it. I think he will continue to grow in the roll and I must say the ball is no longer breaking the line itself. (Inside gag for those who know it)
Lastly to the Coach, and the Coaching staff, you are finally getting a handle on a problem I saw round 2 last year, out defence is getting stronger, We arent attacking with it yet across the park but we are in certain sections. Our Goal line defence has improved out of site, since the start of the year, this could come down to players finally being comfortable with there fellow players and having confidence in each other to do the job they are assigned to do.
I don't mind if we arent like 2001's side which were attacking marvels, I would be happier if we were like the 1999 and 2000 sides that were miserly with meterage against them. Being able to hold a side in their own 40 and forcing them to kick out of it, has it benefits at the end of your attacking set.
But hey it is only one game as some critics are saying. Nothing to be overly happy about yet, but you can put a rye smile on your face when you see someone wearing a Roosters jumper, for the next eight weeks any rate.
