The number of runs a middle forward makes is dependent on the game situation (i.e. scoreboard). For bench players this could be anything by the time they come onto the field.

So what you're saying is you'd expect your bench prop to make more than 4 runs in a 25 minute stint in a game where his side has 70% of the footy and ends up winning by 48-10?

Yeah, I agree.

I don't think his defence is as bad as you say it is. He lateral movement for his size is fairly good.
In the modern game, for tight forwards, defence equals workrate - you need to get numbers into the tackle. I posted a few weeks/months ago the tackles per minute stats for about 50 NRL middle forwards and Junior Paulo was dead last.

Before he was rumoured to have signed with the Raiders and you take out the Moses effect we were 6/9 with him, so a win rate of 66.6%. He was in serious form and was a large proportion of the reason why we were going so well. Darren Lockyer's win percentage in his club career was 66.76% and he had an alright career so saying we weren't great because of him is a little rich.

You and I both know that our results in '13, '14 and '15 had minimal bearing on him. You're better than that.
Just because he has a couple of highlights moments running at halfbacks doesn't make him elite. Jason Taumalolo is a genuine elite forward who is also a fairly lazy defender. I agree their coaches don't expect them to wear themselves out chasing the ball in defence but here is the difference between the two in statistical terms, showing just how superior Taumalolo is. I have included Fifita to show another elite middle forward who works harder than both:

Minutes per game
62 Taumalolo
58 Paulo
55 Fifita

Tackles per minute
0.44 Taumalolo
0.34 Paulo
0.52 Fifita

Tackles per attempt (tackles + missed tackles)
0.95 Taumalolo
0.96 Paulo
0.96 Fifita

Runs per minute
0.29 Taumalolo
0.27 Paulo
0.31 Fifita

Metres per run
11.2 Taumalolo
9.5 Paulo
9.2 Fifita

Tackle breaks per run
0.24 Taumalolo
0.12 Paulo
0.21 Fifita

Line breaks per 10 runs (I chose ten runs just to drop a decimal point)
0.14 Taumalolo
0.07 Paulo
0.06 Fifita

LBAs per 10 runs
0.00 Taumalolo
0.14 Paulo
0.06 Fifita

Offloads per run
0.06 Taumalolo
0.11 Paulo
0.14 Fifita

Not if our defence was already on the back foot. I reckon Evans made a lot of decoy runs while the ball went out the back to Pearce and Keary during his 25 minutes.

Also, Evans didn't play in the first half. Here's the runs made by Roosters middle forwards in the first 40 minutes:

13 Taukeiaho
12 Waerea-Hargreaves
8 Napa
4 Tetevano
3 Guerra

Here's how many runs they made in the second 40:

6 Taukeiaho
5 Guerra (but spent 15 minutes at edge forward)
5 Tetevano
4 Evans
4 Napa
4 Waerea-Hargreaves

With Evans leaving for better money I'd say he will be used as needed for the rest of the year. He will get more minutes and runs in tight games, while in the blowouts the youngsters like Tetevano will be given more opportunity.
Yeah, I agree.
I disagree.

I don't think his defence is as bad as you say it is. He lateral movement for his size is fairly good. He may make less tackles per game than his counterparts but I suggest that this is because coaching staff realise that his attack is very good and it would be a waste of his ability having him make so many tackles.

If he wasn't to be considered for Origin it would be due to fears about his fitness i.e. punching out 40mins of footy at the pace of the game. Like all players, his attack and defence would be of less quality under fatigue.
Nah it has nothing to do with coaching staff, he's just a lazy Merkin who had the hide to leave Parra. Pou started dissing the bloke as soon as there were rumours he had signed somewhere else. If he was still with us he would be singing his praises saying he was the best attacking prop on the game used expertly by BA by not having make too many tackles. It's what he does.

We weren't great last year because of Paulo - he was in our side since 2013 when we won a spoon, as well as through 2014 and 2015.
In 2013 he was a 19 year old rookie who came in at the back end of the year and was still good enough to win Rookie of the year. In 2014 he still wasn't even in our top 25 until halfway through the season but by the end he was our starting prop not a bad effort by a 20 year old. In 2015 I'd say he was arguably our best forward and he was on chump change, Ricky knew how good he was and came calling he offered overs but Paulo didn't stop the Raiders being Edrick Lee's shit hands away from a GF spot last year. He has flaws in his game I have neve denied this but in a strong hardworking pack he can offer you what only a handful of props can in the entire comp.

Mannah is fine as is Alvaro if at a team like Roosters, Dogs,Storm.

But they are with Matagi and Vae along with a smallish backrow.

I don't rate Terepo as a great Prop. but still better then Alvaro. They may make the same meters per run. The defenders may use 80% effort to stop Terepo thou and 25% to stop Alvaro.

Klemmer is ridiculously overrated, against the Cowboys he was non existent. But he looks angry when he runs.

I wish one of our forwards could be non-existent and still make 140M off 15 runs :p

Klemmer is a beast, but the real issue is that players like that almost never come in the market. The Dragons got lucky with Vaughan. They were willing to splash big money on a bloke who was on the outer for allegedly being a shit merkin and it has paid off so far. Everyone else had to poach or develop their Klemmer or their JWH or their Bromwich

Brownie is just just about 100% back in full fitness, this is the first game since his injury that his ribs weren't giving him any discomfort

Unfortunately (or fortunately for us) I think he may fall victim to the Aiden Tolman rule...."no middle forward who weighs less than a small box truck can play for NSW".

Has he played a bad game at all this year?

Every single run is down at 100 miles an hour, whether he gets smacked the one before he will be carting it back up within 2 tackles.

What a brilliant buy, well done BA.

Brown could really do with some help in the middle. We really need someone just as good as him or better to get us to be a contender.

Agreed, one more who would give you 110% week in week out with Brown would turn us into a very good footy team.
