lets see how he goes in 2012 before we write him off for 2013

Why would he go any better this year than he went last year?

He's a workhorse, and he should play every game this year, but former Origin/international players at the end of their careers don't come cheaply.

Whatever we end up paying Hindy after this year - paycut or not - would be better spent on someone younger and more explosive.

what is the long serving player discount these days? i think it used to be total of $200K spent over max 4 players .... Burt and Hindy are the only 2 long ones left - so there's plenty to cover hindy's contract if burt isn't kept.

Strides is right. He might look better value with his 10 year discounts. Provided that he is not preventing a young gun from playing or signing from another club.

And like Preston at the titans and Hasem at the dogs previously, Hindy is worth offering an exceedingly generous contract purely on the basis of what he brings to the club outside of footy. And if it doesn't take mach of the cap, all the better

If Kearney's fair dinkum about making the tough decisions, then Hindy won't be here in 2013.

Well if we make the finals Hindy must not have went too bad, so he deserves to stay. If we have a year like last year it's Kearney who should be the one leaving.

i think he's earned the right to play on if he wants despite what u guys say he's still a good player it would be wrong to show him the door before he wanted to go the guy played origin the year before last ffs

The difference is Kearney will be improving every year while Hindy is heading in the other direction.

barring recruitment from outside the club, if hindy and to a lesser extent ben smith were to leave, who would be the workhorse second rower for 2013 on? .... every club has a guy who is primarily there for defensive abilities .... hell our defense can be sus at the best of times, take out the guys that thrive on defending and I'd be a bit scared.

matt keating racks up his share in defense - but tbh I don't love that our hooker, who you want adding a bit of spark here and there would also be our defensive stalwart.

we'd have to recruit a strong defensive back rower to patrol the middle of the field if we lost hindy, cos I just don't see another at the club who fits

You don't have to have an 80 minute workhorse playing there - a variety of player types are used in the central back-row spot throughout the NRL, with varying degrees of quality.

Consider the past two grand finals: last year they were Watmough and Luck (both 80 minutes), the year before they were Smith/Young and Myles/Nuuausala. The year before that it was Hindmarsh (80 minutes) and Johnson/Hinchcliffe.

Just in those six grand final teams there were several different types of back-rowers used in the central position. Two of them can play hooker. Three can play in the front row (four if you count Hindy).

At our club we have an abundance of front rowers, including a couple who defend well and have high workrates. Central back-row (or 'lock' as it is sometimes still called) is where we might be able to fit a couple more into the 17.

If Kearney wants to sign up a hooker from elsewhere (hypothetically Farah?), then Keating could easily become that defence-oriented centrally-located back-rower (which in days gone by I would have called lock!).

stop waffling and name names poupou

Shackleton and/or Brien. If we use two hookers in the 17 we could even get a few more minutes out of Keating there, as bart has mentioned.

Otherwise we could just use six props in our 17 and rotate them through the three spots, like Bennett and Brian Smith did last year.

'Central back-row'??

The member of the back-row who does not attack and defend in either (left or right) of the four-man edge groups on the field.

For example, last year we had Lasalo in the right hand group, Maitua in the left hand group, and Hindmarsh was in the central group with the hooker and the props.

Every club sets up their team like this and they have been doing it for well over a decade.

Sometimes the term 'lock' is used to distinguish it from the 'second-rowers' (edge forwards), but 'lock' means something else to a lot of people, not least of which is the player who packs in at the back of scrums. In most teams (if not all), the player who packs at the back of the scrum these days is either the dummy half (feeding team) or fullback (defending team).

Wonder how Billy Rogers is going these days. SK had him earmarked as the next Dallas Johnson didn't he?

It's called lock. Get over it. He wears number 13.

You're over-complicating things. No one calls anything central back-row. Teams are set up how they want to be.

He is currently available for a very reasonable price on the daily telegraphs supercoach. Im thinking he will be the next Corey Parker this year
