Nathan Tinkler relinquishes ownership of the Newcastle Knights

If we lose Bennett we lose Bennett. Tinkler needs to go. Footy has been a sideshow for us since Tinks took.

That's a good way to describe it.

When something sounds too good to be true, it usually is. That's the way it's all turned out unfortunately.

Knights will fight on....the club is built in solid foundations.

For all those outside the Hunter, this is standard for what's happening up here atm. Companies going bust & people losing their jobs left, right & centre.

Tough times in the coal industry after quite a few years of making hay.

I'd sacrifice a lot to get rid of Tinkler. If it means Bennett leaves and a handful of other players decide to follow him, then so be it, the pain would be temporary but the club would be in tact. Otherwise, he'll put us in the ground.

So sick of this bloke. Has been nothing but bad headlines.

My game is taking a hit from it (hospitality) along with some others as a flow on effect. Just hope the uni/students go ok from the budget.......

Yes, a lot less disposable income out there .

So you've seen a noticeable downturn in patronage?

As much as people ridicule the likes of Tinkler, the country needs successful people like him (he was), so others can share the spoils.

It's a sad situation for thousands really.

I don't understand how in this age where the nrl meets the cap and some that players aren't getting paid, I would hate to think hes embezzling from the nrl grant to help pay for his new coal mine in qld.

The grant basically pays the salary cap but there are plenty of other costs in a professional sporting club.

Know what you are saying though.

Very true. who could have predicted the hit the coal industry has taken? Sure as hell not me. I do also think Tinkler has always had the club's best interests at heart, but it's just not worth the constant circus he's bringing the club regardless of how much of that is his fault. Even if he gets back on track the speculation and uncertainty will never go away while he's at the helm. If he really was a fan he'd walk away.

The good people of Newcastle would be horrified to learn how much Tinkler paid Cronulla to release Jeremy Smith. It was at the same time employees were in dispute with their Superannuation entitlements.

And how much was that?

Just saw on nbn news summary - Vale shutting their 2 mines (north of singleton - 1 underground / 1 open cut) - 500 more jobs to go.....+ everyone else that services those mines.

500 + more families in misery tonight.

That's terrible. I haven't lived in Newy in a couple of years but I know how important the mines are for a lot of people's livelihood. Kinda puts things into perspective when you hear about 500+ people losing their jobs doesn't it.

Perhaps Darius has been secretly running a "I'll start putting in on the field when you start putting into my account" protest these last few weeks?

Would certainly explain him outright refusing to catch bombs of late

The sooner this fat grub is out of our great game the better.

Tew, the personficiation of integrity. Did the difficult and unpopular thing and was stubborn when everyone wanted him to shut up and go away, and he did all that because it was the right thing to do. The cliche is hindsight is 20/20, well Robbie Tew had 20/20 vision when it mattered.

The creditors are coming at Tinkler from all sides. You get the feeling the walls are closing in on the fat man.

The fact that they haven't been paid by now is the problem.

And this isn't an isolated issue.

What about about the various tradies not getting paid. What about the repossessed chopper and plane.

There are bigger issues here and to be putting it all down to "some tax office guy" is naive.

If it's true that his debt is now significantly greater than his assets, he's in trouble. It's at that point that creditors start getting nervous and more likely to pull the trigger.

If you keep flipping a coin on bigger and bigger investments eventually it'll catch up to you. When you get lucky on a big investment you're supposed to then get conservative with your money, consolidate and diversify. It seems Tinkler has not done that and just made bigger and bigger gambles.

These quotes are in this thread from nearly 2 years ago. I was right all along. And this was a time when the majority of opinion was pro-Tinkler and being anti-Tinkler was being very brave and insightful.

My gut instinct was spot on. I saw it back in 2012. Pity it took some people a lot longer.

I really hope he hasn't found a way to keep the guarantee. The Knights should have pulled the pin a long time ago, Tinks was obviously f**ked for a long time.

Doesn't explain him doing it for most of his time at the knights.....unless you are BM.
