Heard one analyst on ESPN today say that we might not see any basketball until January, 2013!

Both sides are absolutely miles apart so i think its safe to say that at the very best we wont see any NBA until January next year.

Such a let down.

Yeah I heard the same on the SVP show. But I'd say January would be closer to the worst case.

I think Oden getting offered $9mil a season, is a good indicator that West will get paid.

Tbf the qualifying offer is a default figure (and it's only for one season). I doubt that Oden would actually get a multi-year contract in the $9 mill per year range. In saying that, given some of the stupid contracts we saw given out last summer, I shouldn't put it past some GM's.

Trail Blazers give Oden $8.8m qualifying offer, so he becomes restricted free agent:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=6717753

Nazr Mohammad signs extension with Thunder:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=6716280

Bit surprising the last one. I like Nazr but he is the wrong side of 30 and his rebounding / shot-blocking numbers decreased last year. Still, if it's only modest money (doesn't say what the deal is) you could do a lot worse for a backup centre.

Wonder what the Blazers money limit is in terms of what offers they'll match?

MIAMI -- Miami Heat guard-forward James Jones has advised the team he won't exercise his player option and will become a free agent, a person familiar with the situation said.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Wednesday because the Heat had not confirmed Jones' decision.

Jones is an eight-year veteran who spent the past three seasons with the Heat. He averaged 5.9 points in 81 games last season and shot 43 percent from 3-point range for the Eastern Conference champions.

Under his contract, Jones would have been paid $1.4 million next season.

How will the Heat recover from this?

Well the Cav's are going with Thompson as a PF then.

JJ Hickson traded to the Kings for Omri Casspi and a 1st round pick.

Seems like a panic trade to me.

Kings shaping up to be pretty decent next year.

Interesting move for both teams. Couple years ago the Cavs could have landed Stoudemire for a package involving Hickson but they didn't want to trade him. Now they move him for Casspi (a nice player if he's your 6th best guy) and a 1st round pick.

As for the Kings, they had a pretty loaded front-court to begin with so they're adding another piece....? Interesting.

Its not only the owners, i was reading that something like 20 owners made a loss last year and will keep operating on a loss for years to come. The players have to realise that the money floating around on wages is ridiculous, this lockout appears that it is going to go on for a while, hopefully we get a shortened season at least but i doubt it.

Shannon Brown opts out

The guy is athletic but seriously is lost on the court and just jacks up shot after shot, i was hoping he would opt out so im happy about this.

Shannon Brown informed the team Thursday that he was exercising his option to terminate the final year of his contract to become an unrestricted free agent.

Brown and his agent, Mark Bartelstein, said this was the best time for the 6-foot-4 guard to test the free-agent market, even though the NBA is about to impose a lockout and no one knows what the future collective bargaining agreement will be.

Brown had to let the Lakers know of his decision by Thursday's deadline.

"We made the best decision for me and everybody around me," Brown said in a telephone interview. "It's an interesting time to do this because of the lockout, but I think this is the best thing for me to do right now."

Have a look at that article I linked, the biggest take away from that for a lot of people I'm guessing would be that total player salaries are fixed at 57% of Basketball Related Income.

Plus, have a look at this - http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/columns/story?columnist=coon_larry&page=NBAFinancials-110630

and http://deadspin.com/5816870/exclusi...-7-million-profit-look-like-a-28-million-loss

They're a bit heavy handed but it shows that perhaps these teams aren't losing money like they say they are.

Let's face it, there's already a salary cap, max salaries, a wage scale and now the owners want to make the players pay for their management mistakes? Come on, that's ridiculous.

The fact player salaries are fixed at 57% is a joke imo.

No other salary capped league in the world has more than 50% revenues.

They should just do a 50/50 split imo.

You can't have owners losing millions just running a team and trying to make the product attractive to its fans.

When shit players like Shannon Brown gets $4m + a year...come on...sorry but thats stupid. That's twice what for instance DeSean Jackson is on in the NFL and he is a star for christs sake.

They don't need 57% of total revenue. Whoever agreed to that is a moron.

Again, I'm not convinced these owners are losing as much money as they claim. There's no doubt a couple small market teams that struggle but it's not as widespread as the NBA is claiming. As for "product attractive to its fans" - come on! The players are the product! Sure I go for the Hawks, but I wanna watch Kobe, Duncan, Pierce, Rose, LeBron etc etc just as much.

And if the Lakers pay Shannon Brown $4m that's their issue - same for the Magic paying Lewis, the Wiz with Arenas or the Hawks with Johnson. They get what the market dictates is their worth, and at the end of the day, these teams are just managing their rosters poorly.

I'm completely with the players on this.

I agree that management needs to take responsibility for handing out stupid contracts, when players like Rashard Lewis and Gilbert are on $20m a year, it just shows how stupid some of these guys in charge are, you cant fault the players if thats what management is willing to pay them.

It really just boils down to this:

Profit Margin = League Revenue - Player salaries (a fixed cost - 57% of League Revenue) – Team expenses (Variable Cost)

If these teams truly are losing money, and one area of expense is tied to revenue, then surely you'd need to look at the other areas of expense to increase your margin. As the author of that article wrote, "The simple takeaway from that table is that Player Salaries and NBA Revenues are growing exactly at the US inflation rate (score one for economists everywhere!). Team expenses are growing at a ridiculous five times that. The owners must know this. A new labor deal will not fix that."

Here it is again.

Shit, hopefully they can come to some sort of agreement sooner rather than later.

If the NBA is on a lock out, that means the players won't get paid that season right?

I'd love to watch more of them after their moves.
