New Melbourne Stadium

I still think you've missed the point - the "heart of the city" is no longer Sydney itself. The majority of the population is to the west - making Homebush a far more accessible location. Crowds alone point to that - the SFS isn't exactly packing out on a weekly basis...

No, didn't miss the point.

However Homebush is still a wasteland in the middle of nowhere. I rarely venture out there because if a game finishes at 9, by the time you go out into the city or anywhere like that it's already 10-10.30 at night. It takes forever to get to regardless of where you're coming from. I hate it there, and a lot of people think the same.

Being able to walk out of a stadium in the heart of the city would be much better.

You can thank soccer for the capacity. If it was left up to the Storm, it would have been at 20k. And Storms main rival will probably be the new Union team, as they will be sharing in-season. As for who opens the stadiums, and plays a game first: lol. Probably the most irrelevant issue going around. That said, we'll average higher than the Storm, and I don't suspect Storm will average over 22k either (which isn't bad).

We're a bigger club than the Storm. End of.

it's true.

the victory are pulling alright crowds aren't they?

either way, it's beneficial for both codes so it's all good. we're not really in competition either being in different seasons.

nrl and a league teaming up against afl... i like that

Pretty sure that's got a lot to do with why crowds are good in Brisbane. People go to the footy as the start of a night out instead of just to go to the footy and then go home. If I had to travel to Ipswich to see a game and then be stuck in Ipswich afterwards I'd probably just go home or rather not go either. Suncorp's position in the city means that they get bums on seats because it's easy to go.

Yeah, that was the point I was driving at. Melbourne's the same - The MCG and TD are in good places for kicking on afterwards.

If there's a good game on at the SFS I'll go to it regardless and head into the city afterwards. If it's at Homebush, I don't bother.

I like Homebush being out of the city, easier for out of towners imo, same in Adelaide at AAMI, but then again I also like driving to the game

The charm of the old facilities at OP is why it will be sad to go from there...reminds me of the suburban games.

Know what you mean, I will always have fond memories of Olympic Park, but more for the players, games, supporters and great friends I've made....but I won't miss the crappy toilets:D

But how can you call it your home ground when victory will only play 5 or 6 games there and the rest at Etihad...now that stadium should be your home ground:D

Besides, had rugby league been around here in Melbourne as long as soccer has been, we'd more than beat your av. attendance....but anyway, welcome to our new stadium...semi-tenants;-)

Not entirely true...

The Victory are only taking their games vs. Sydney and Adelaide to Ethiad (plus finals)...

So depending on the draw it'll be more like 9 games at MRS.

There are plenty of Victory fans who are pretty pissed off by this also.

Read an article in the herald sun, saying that victory will only play 5 or 6 games at MRS..maybe VictoryFC could confirm this.

It'll depend on the draw the number of games the Victory take to Ethiad.

Since you play some sides at home twice and others once, it'll depend on how many times at home they face Sydney and Adelaide, as they're the only ones who are consistently expected to draw more than 32,000.

Sorry, should have mentioned.

The plans also included extensive plans for road upgrades and public transport to Moore Park including light rail and metro links.

The stadium wouldn't have been multi-purpose - at least the plans didn't indicate it, although it did mention the stadium becoming the home of the NSWRL post games - we'd have a 70,000 seat RL specific stadium on the city's doorstep with transit links.

Sydney's two major stadia would have been it at Moore Park, and probably an upgraded Parramatta Stadium in the West, and the Grand Final and other major events would still be held in the heart of the city rather in no-mans land out there.

I think it would have been far better.

Shame that.

Would have been great. Plus Superleague wouldn't have poisoned the public by then and the stadium would have been built rectangular.

 Amazing how you STILL miss the point.

Sydney's population centre is WEST. Even further west of Homebush, out near Wentworthville actually. The stadium needs to be accessible to 4 million people, not a few latte sippers and office workers near the city.

1. Homebush is still hard to get to from the west unless the buses are running, which is nearly never.

2. No one from the west actually goes.

Well, to be fair, Homebush is a good 30 minute drive from Penrith along the M4. Its not really that hard. But it is hard on weekdays when we get home from work in the terrible traffic, then have to drive to a train station or to the stadium and the traffic is always bad TOWARDS the city because everyone is going to the clubs.

If Homebush can get a good night time district going, a few more clubs and bars and they get a good reputation, I think crowds would slowly begin to rise.

If ANZ was near Wentworthville, like Timmah said, it would easily get an extra 10k a week.

Not true, it is quite easy to get to from Liverpool. A lot easier than SFS.
