New NSW Second division plan "Platinum League"

well norths are in the nsw cup, and they are a feeder team for souths, so i guess north sydney is rabbitohs territory now! :)

manly might have to relocate to the sunshine coast in the future! :)

It might have been ok had the Bears been dissolved and their territory given to Souths, it would have been awkward and bizarre having Souths incorporate North Sydney, but at least there would have been an NRL side giving the area proper attention. As it is, that's not the case, it's not actually Souths territory, they just have an agreement with the Bears to use them as their feeder size, but the area's schools and junior sides don't see much of the Souths players or attention, other than those who have been dropped to NSW cup. The Norths junior teams are all actually in Manly's comp, yet thanks to inaction and old divisions, Manly doesn't have proper access to the North Shore at the NRL level.

You gloat about Manly possibly needing to relocate, but if that happens, and the CC Bears are never given entry, then that's an awful outcome for the game in Sydney. Grab a map and look at the size of the Northern Beaches and North Shore, that is an obscene amount of territory to not have serviced by an NRL side full time.

I think the nrl has said on many occasions that they aren't looking to move or cut any of the sydney clubs, and ensuring current clubs are as strong as they can be is one of their priorities

The new funding model seems to suggest otherwise IMO.

Reading between the lines they are saying "Here is all the cash you wanted and claimed you needed, no strings attached, spend it however you like just get your house in order" knowing full well it probably won't be enough for all Sydney clubs to get out of their mire. Then in 2018 the ARLC will turn around and say "We gave you all this money you said would make you financially solvent and you still haven't got your house in order, piss off to Perth".

Anyone else see this article? I'm very interested to know more about this Platinum League. Would it be like a national second division?

The NRL today outlined a proposed blueprint to take the game forward over the next decade.

The plan, drawn up by the Head of Game Strategy and Development, Shane Richardson, is designed to improve player welfare and pathways, upgrade and strengthen the second tier and assist in protecting elite players from burnout.
The strategy will reduce costs for clubs, further grow the game outside the current reach and provide a new level of awareness regarding player welfare as they progress through the elite pathways.

Mr Richardson said Rugby League has an opportunity to extend its reach beyond its current footholds to country Australia, Affiliated States , New Zealand , Pacifica and ultimately Internationally.

He said the strategy takes a “whole of game” approach to the challenges of the future.

The key recommendations include:
• Increasing the size of NRL squads to 36 players – including six rookies
• Restricting players from making their NRL debuts until the year they turn 19. No player to be signed with an agent until he is 17 - and contracts for these players should be for a maximum three year term
• Restructuring the National Youth Competition into a State based under 20 competition
• Introducing rookie contracts for the start of the 2018 season with each club allowed to sign three rookies each year on two year contracts
• Revamping and upgrading the State League into a Platinum League to spread the footprint of the competition into all the areas that play Rugby League
• Easing player welfare by considering additional leave , creating a formal International window over an eight year period and reducing the number of five day turnarounds
Mr Richardson said the phasing out of the NYC and payments for Under 18 players - along with a new business model for the second tier - would result in a $20 million saving for the NRL clubs.

There would be a significant increase in expenditure in the pathways and in particular the second tier by the NRL.

“We are looking to improve and extend the pathways not detract from them,” Mr Richardson said.

Mr Richardson said a committee representing the State bodies would help determine the teams which take part in the Platinum League.

He said the models being shown during consultation for 11 teams in NSW competition were only examples to demonstrate how far the game could reach if the new League was established. But no determination had been made on the final makeup of the League.

“We want to give everyone the opportunity to play in the NRL – whether they come from the country, New Zealand, the Affiliated States, Pacifica or anywhere else in the world of Rugby League,” Mr Richardson said.

“This strategy is not intended to squeeze anyone out of the game - it is designed to include more participants than ever before.”

Mr Richardson rubbished suggestions that there had not been sufficient consultation on the blueprint.

He said meetings had been held with all stakeholders and that consultation was on-going.

“Further consultation with the RLPA and other interested parties will be held before any final decisions are made,” he said.

“This is an exciting time for the game…we have an opportunity with the new broadcast rights deal to stretch our vision and allow the game to break out from some of the restraints of the past.

“Most importantly, we have started a discussion about the way forward and that has to be a positive start for the game.”

Who knows, seems either the media isn't reporting it well or Richo is chopping and changing depending on backlash?

The reporting has been with a nsw slant but it is clearly intended to have 2 conferences superseding the curent QLD and NSW cups.

So does this mean Melbourne and Victoria will move back to the ARLC Southern Platinum League ?

Depends if the NSWRL allow it lol. They only left as NSWRL kicked them out of HM and SG ball due the their reserve grade side being a Qland link up. Classic case of not doing what best for the game and protecting petty interests.

Doubt it they have aligned their u20 team with the sunshine coast now and look to putting down roots there. And why would they play in nsw when they were treated like that by nswrl

Thats not quite right. The sunshine coast u16 and u18 are all sunshine coast locals. There are kids in those teams that are now part of the storm development squad but they aren't placing victorian kids in these teams. Victoria actually has u16 and 18 state teams that play in the cyrill connell and mal meninga cup comps in qld though. I think that there are storm kids in these teams. Not sure about 20s apart from sunny coast having a team in the qrl fogs colts comp as well as the storm 20s permanently based on sunny coast and playing their home games on the coast. Not really sure what the player mix is between these 2 squads though.

As long as each club met its quota of nurturing juniors it didn't matter where they did it, if the second tier is going to be truly expansive it's better if clubs donate cash by way of relinquishing handouts and let the NRL have full responsibility for developing juniors . . . and no more f**king crying foul over juniors
