In the 1960s, referee Col Pearce said that no one pays money to watch a bloke blowing a whistle.
It used to be the aim of the referee to NOT be noticed by the crowd. If there were no refereeing controversies, then the ref must have done a good job managing the contest.
But now, the NRL appears to be going out of it's way to put the referees in the spotlight as much as possible. The over abundance of rule changes to bring in more officiating are taking the contest away from the players.
We're essentially paying to see more stoppages and countless slomo replays. Col Pearce must be spinning in his grave.
