Recruitment sucks ???

In the past 3 - 4 years we have signed Luke Lewis , Michael Gordon , Andrew Fifita , Todd Carney , Michael Ennis , Ben Barba - all NRL superstars.
+ Chris Heighington , Beau Ryan , Jeff Robson , Blake Ayshford , Kyle Stanley , Gerard Beale , Bryce Gibbs - all proven above average NRL players at other clubs.
+ attracting exciting young prospects such as Val Holmes , Sio Feki , Jack Bird.

The problem is not recruitment , it's getting the players to perform & play as a team once they're here.

Hit the nail on the head!

Of course we'don't have a recruitment officer.

We have a bunch of nobodies in there. We need to get rid of entire lot:

Flano
Williams
Bagnal
Noakes

Gorman said Mooney and Morrison yesterday?

If they are our talent spotters then perhaps we need a rethink.

Even Gorman is deluding himself. Recruitment starts with spotting talent at a young age often interstate or overseas. Who was the last Maori/islander junior to make grade with us? For all the criticism , our local comp
gave us Peachey,Townsend and Lichaa. All now at clubs near the top of the table. Pffffft.

Look at the youngsters Souths,Penrith,Wests and the Roosters have found.

In all honesty, can we even attract decent recruitment people? Doesn't look like it. Our 20s are historically a non event.

Mark Tookey is regardedas one of the best QLD talent spotters approached us and was turned away.

Stuart Raper approached the Sharks about being the full time recruitment officer and was turned away.

If Mooney is our recruitment officer we have kept up our jobs for the boys routine.

Im not saying we should have went with the above 2, but they know more about football than some of the guys in our organisation.

We are back to the 2009/2010 days.

Seriously. No sponsor, a coach under pressure and not real lure to come here.

It will be about recruiting squad players again to remain afloat unless a miracle happens.

Hodkinson rejected a huge offer from us. Maloneys manager won't return our calls. Sezer isn't keen. Sandow will re-sign.

TC is not going to come back. Our actual best shot at a halfback is Albert Kelly, who is starting to look like he is eating Owen Craigie.

Even Chad Townsend doesn't want to return.

Tough times ahead. We face the very real prospect of fighting off a low finish in our 50th season instead of aiming for a premiership.

We need to start scouting halves from elsewhere, obviously part of the problem is the lack of decent halves so we need to and think outside the square.

I realise it's not as simple as that though.

It's not all bad.. If they got serious and hired someone like Johns to come in and help develop Tracey. He is a gun, a local junior and could be anything.

I think we should be trying this out or someone along the same lines.

It feels like we have the potential to become a little bit like the Roosters back in the day.... the exit lounge they used to call it, right?

Retirement fund.

High profile/ name players, past their peak abilities and in decline relative to others, securing a cozy work environment for two to three years to line the coffers before they finish up.

Fg I hope not.

I hope not also, these senior players need to pull their finger out THIS WEEK. I have a terrible fear you could be right.

Luke Lewis - Unwanted released mid contract from his club
Gordon - Signed
Fifita - Released mid contract from his club, signed with us then signed with another club who released him back to us before he even put a shirt on
Carney - Sacked free agent
Ennis - Signed
Barba - Unwanted released mid contract

Holmes signed as a kid was a good get as is Bird. Feki was released by the Raiders in pre season to fit Berrigan in before coming to us so that is more luck than anyway.

If we can't sign top players who want to come here we will struggle. We simply cannot afford to be picking up scraps in the market and be expecting to contend.

The 3 players we signed from that list outright were when they signed Ennis (30), Gordon (29) and Robson (29). All with their best years behind them and all playing in our spine. From memory the only one of them we had to compete with NRL clubs for was Ennis and Canberra. That is a massive issue.

All fair & true K but it is the way they are coached that makes them not so good signings, as you indicate.

The issue is we struggle to develop youth at the club into first graders. That builds culture and combinations. Look at our NSW cup winning side from just over a season ago - Gardner, Roqica, D.Fifita and Politoni are the only ones still at the club. Auvaa, Townsend, Sopoaga, Peachey, Lichaa and Wright are all at other NRL clubs. I included Auvaa as he went unsigned at the end of the season and was picked up by Souths. If he didn't have the off field issues he'd be talked about as a rep player this year after a great season last year. Probably a good thing we didn't sign him though.

You go back another few years with the same coaching staff at the club in 2011 when our Toyota Cup side finished a game off the grand final. None of those guys are even at the club 4 years later.

Until the club stops looking for quick fixes to be competitive for Gallen in his older years we will be stuck on the treadmill. We need to have an actual plan. Tap all the guys over 30 bar Ennis on the shoulder and move them on. Lewis, Gordon, Gallen and hit the market with a view of building a squad around Graham, Fifita, Barba and talented youngsters in Holmes, Bird and Nu. Make Ennis captain and actually build towards something like the Panthers did. If there was a u/20's draft Holmes and Bird would both be top 5 picks. f**kING USE THEM

jobs for the boys routine.

That's the sharks slogan.

I can guarantee this is how the sharks fill their positions, I know some of the people working for them (working with flano, you see them in the dressing room on tv on gameday) and can tell you they have zero rugby league experience and only have a job because they have mates in the club.

Question from the floor without notice - Can Jack Bird develop into a 5/8?

No kicking game for one, passing game is very sluggish for two. Second rower being touted in the centres as because he's a little green to be running into the big guys imo...he managed to find space with his bizarro square passes in the 9's with all that room, but he doesn't have that fine motor skill flair to squeeze good ball out in tight spaces. In saying that, I think he's a good centre prospect, but needs to work on his ball-playing.

But yeah, not even close to a 5/8 in my mind.
