As far as population goes, if a new Queensland NRL club was happening & not in Brisbane/Ipswich then it'd more likely be either Sunshine Coast (if the Dolphins can accept that) or Cairns (likewise with the Cowboys).

Central Qld just doesn't seem to have the population base for an NRL club.

You might be able to scrape together 180-200k within 100km of Rockhampton. Mackay is bigger than Rocky but it’s more than 300km away and basically on the borderline between CQ & NQ.

Rockhampton, Capricorn Coast and Gladstone would be the base they’d have to hang their hat on for the majority of their active support.

Not huge numbers but strong RL country. I was born & raised in the area so my ‘heart’ choice would always be CQ and if they did get a team I think they’d do well enough, I just don’t think they will get a team.

If they have money they have a chance.

Redcliffe is just bayside Brisbane... it really has no connection geographically or culturally with sunshine coast and people here really don't give a f**k about Redcliffe..

Sure, but as their "turf" skews to the north, any prospect of a team just north of Brisbane will likely get the Dolphins lobbying against it - regardless of how Sunshine Coast folk feel.

I can see Sunshine Coast having the same issues Central Coast has. Despite having a decent and growing population they are too close to the Brisbane clubs despite neither of them really representing SC.

In a decade or two SC will be as big as Gold Coast was when the Titans came in. Who knows, if they put a bid in for 21 or 22 and the Ipswich bid isn’t great they might be a chance.

Good point - right now, I guess they're such an awkward size where "if you're gonna put a team so close to Brisbane, you may as well put another team IN Brisbane".. and the Sunshine Coast is best served right now by a Qld Cup team & as a secondary market for whatever NRL club wants to go there (or rather can be *lured* to play game/s there!)

However in a few decades time they might have that critical mass where they more clearly demand an NRL team - especially once Brisbane itself reaches saturation point.

Lol, you guys love the idea of sunshine coast for some reason. Money is in Brisbane. Derbies are in Brisbane. Sunshine Coast is a retirement home.

I could be convinced - after all, it has one of the bigger Queenalsnd populations OUTSIDE Brisbane.

However, as you say, right now the money & derbies are in Brisbane - and they could support a 3rd team.. but population growth & demographics can (and often do) change.

For instance, the Kapiti Coast north of Wellington - especially Waikanae/Otaki was traditionally a retirement zone.. but sprawl plus improved transport links (electrifying & running regular commuter rail to Paraparaumu then Waikanae.. then building the Coastal Expressway & Transmission Gully motorway) has been changing that.

Outside of Pelican Waters and Noosa/Noosaville(true retirement suburbs), Sunshine Coast is predominately younger to middle aged families. Why do you think they built Aura for?

Current pop of +370k and it currently is equivalent to Gold Coast back in 1998-99. They are forecasting 540k by 2040. Which really isn’t that far away.

Granted Brisbane will also be growing but by that stage the remaining empty land between Bris and SC will be filled with housing estates much like Bris to GC in areas like Ormeau, Kingsholme, Pimpama, Willows Vale and Coomera that went from being bush land to hugely built up housing areas in the last 30 years.

Regardless of all that Ipswich should be considered before Sunshine Coast.
