True but if you consider number of participants v number of concussions and then that can be proven to have led directly to CTE, its still tiny.
Like I said having no exercise is far more likely to lead to dementia than playing sport (other than boxing and UFC)

But then you only need to look at the numbers now they know what to look for. Both rugby codes have concussion issues, and in 20 years the number of CTE cases will be exponentially higher unless something is done.

Im guessing you've never been to manchester and Newcastle if you think Union has some sort of strong foothold there lol
The whole of England is soccer and you know it

League has the m62 and hull

Manchester was a dump but the clubs were ok

hull wasn’t much better

east hull was like my druitt without the westfields

We still dont have that data to know incidence rates, at the moment its tiny. The prevalence of younger onset dementia generally is tiny and CTE is small sub set of that. Things are being done. But as with all things there will always be risks, some will accept those risks, others wont.

The important thing for sports is
1. counteract BS perception with the realty of the risk and also the balance with the benefits of playing team sport in an inclusive and supportive environment
2. Reduce the risk as much as is feasible without destroying the fabric of the sport
3. Have an even less risky option for those not willing to take the risk of a full contact sport

Good things is RL is well on the front foot on points 2 & 3

There was a guy walking down the street in east hull I said hello too

his face was bleeding
Cut himself shaving, or wife glassed him? In East Hull could be either.
TBF I saw far more drugged up homeless when visiting Parra than I ever saw in Hull. Was a bit shocking for a country as wealthy as Australia.

Your claim its "BS" will last right up until the first Class Action is taken. Every new bit of research being done is supporting the case of concussion caused CTE. As long as players are getting concussions it will remain in the news, and with every new case of CTE reported by ex players the "hysteria" will increase.

I am not doubting that repeated concussions CAN cause CTE. What we dont know is how often and how many concussions it takes, or in what pattern, or if some people are more susceptible than others due to totally different factors. For example took us 100 years to discover that carrying 2 APOE4 genes majorly increase the risk factor impact for developing Alzheimer's.

re class case, theres some open at moment, they are very unlikely to win. Only reason NFL won was the NFL covered up the risk when they knew about it. Since then no one has covered the risk, everyone has adapted things to reduce risk, lots of education with professional sports people about the risk and how to minimise it. After all that its up to you if you decide to do that job with that risk.

yes I agree, which is why we need some counterbalance media control to that hysteria with the reality. Driving your car is still the most risky thing you can do in your life, we all except the risk because of the benefit.

That was years ago and I was going to a work event in parra park and had banners and sht you dope. But yeh convinced me once and for all what a sht place Sydney was to live if you wanted to actually get around the city.

No I'm talking last year when I went and stayed over in parra to catch the panthers game, homeless everywhere around the station, very sad to see for such a wealthy country. Maybe they should have built some shelters rather than commbank?

You're never going to get "counterbalance media", not in this day and age. As soon as you go against the narrative it will be seen to be "covering it up". Especially when the science is baking that up.

The only rational thing to do is continue to lower the instances of concussion. And for the Rugby codes, that is next to impossible.

Never been to commbank

you generally don’t see much homeless in Sydney there are some in the cbd

You might see one in the suburbs it’s not a normal thing

using a car in Sydney is a major pain. Anything longer than ten mins driving and I’m out

Or minimise, and accept and provide alternative as I say. We've known about CTE in boxers for decades, people still choose to box. You can end up a quadriplegic playing Rugby (sic) people still choose to play. I have a race car, its batsht crazy dangerous, I still choose to race. Its human nature to rationalise risk away, good job or we wouldn't do anything!

With 20% of NZ GDP being lost in the Cyclone, I don't think a new NRL team is a big priority for their Govt for a decade or more

There was never any commentary from them to suggest another NRl club was ever a priority anyway. If anything it will come from the local council who may want to see better stadium utilisation and sports tourism boost for the city.

Thoughts to everyone impacted by the cyclone. Looks pretty horrific. earthquakes and now this, NZ cant win a trick at the moment.

If you want to wrap yourself around a power pole in your hobby racecar, that's your problem (as long as your not hurting anyone else)

In terms of professional sports though, You can't legislate away an employers duty of care.

As usual, people are generally sheep and will be guided by media and their own false perceptions.
The risk is minimal (from what we know so far) in most sports. The high profile courtcases and media scare mongering is causing a perception that isnt born out in reality. You're more likely to develop dementia from lack of physical exercise and isolation than from playing sport!
As far as I know the only sport we have anything approximating a good estimate of the rate of CTE is gridiron, and even then that number only takes into account ex-NFL players and not all participants. Every expert that isn't on the NFL's payroll agrees that their number of 30% of ex-NFL players having CTE is almost certainly an underestimate as well, but it'll be a while before we can tell for sure.

Most experts I've seen are also open to the possibility that the rate of CTE might be lower in the general American football playing population than in the NFL, but the truth is that we don't really know whether that's the case either.

So if we're being really honest we don't really know what's going on yet, which isn't surprising considering that we only really started researching the subject about a decade ago, and that there simply isn't the resources and manpower available to do all the research necessary as quickly as we'd like. Social, political, and industrial obstacles to doing that research aren't helping either.

Actually you kind of can, every day in fact. Players of professional sport get injured every day, they arent suing their clubs.
One of the reasons why I think the NRl could have been smarter in its CBA negotiations re longer medical care and a stronger CTE response fund.

England is the home of union so English union fans would know why super rugby has collapsed

but this is something I said a month ago
This is your most ignorant comment yet. England don't control the game like the NRL do in league.

Those guys are clueless about NZ rugby.
