We get it. The sky is falling 🙄
Meanwhile, I'm watching better rugby league year after year. Revenue increases year after year and the comp continues to expand. The international game continues to expand. End of Rugby league.

Ah yes the head in the sand approach, never mind the "international game expansion" has been all about Island nations that field teams of players who have weren't born there or have ever been there, from another country whos playing numbers are diminishing at a horrendous rate... 20% in 3 years!

Spot on. You would think that would rap up the subject but some are thicker that most.
It's true you are, you have shown it time and time again.

Except there are clear benefits and statistically a much lower risk. Using that as a comparison is disingenuous at best.

The problem is that League is a TEAM sport not an individual sport. In order for a proper game to be had you need 34 people. And getting injured is one thing, generally you can make a full recovery. but brain damage is another matter entirely.

Again you are being disingenuous. F1 is an INDIVIDUAL person, NFL is in a country of 332 million people.
League in NZ, in a county of only five million has a player base of less than 20 thousand and falling. Pathways work ONLY if you have players interested in or being allowed to play in.

You do like being disingenuous that's for sure. When player numbers here fall to a point that there are no clubs or competitions to play in, and enough players to even fill a team, then the sport dies here.
Land transport accidents are the leading cause of death in 1-14 year olds. So if you want to keep little johnnie really safe, stay off the road.

I dont disagree, but breaking your neck isnt exactly a minor outcome of playing sport either yet people continued to play the sports after such incidents.

What does it matter if F1 is individual, my point was you dont need huge participation rates to have a huge fan following.

What does popualtion size matter re NFL? the point was, you seem to be struggling grasping points here, that for 32 clubs they have around 30k of the better college players roughly feeding them. Not a huge participation level to draw the required players for 32x45 player squads.

And you do like being chicken little. AuckRU jnrs have gone UP! More schools are playing union in Auckland. Wheres your evidence that the participation rates are heading so low in NZ that there wont be enough rugby (sic) jnrs to furnish the 6 elite clubs across the codes? Do you even know what that critical participation level is? I doubt it.

Anyone notice the reoccurring theme of Te kahs posts?
First ignores your point, then uses it to make a completely different irrelevant point.
If you have a point to counter that , he'll simply move it again and on and on. If that fails it on to personal insults.
Can never concede a point of be wrong ever this way.
It could be the result of some kind of trauma or disorder .
In any case it's completely pointless to have a conversation with such a person.
Complete waste of time.

FMD, where do those "30k of the better college players " come form to feed those 32 clubs? how many hundreds of thousands of junior players are whittled down to get those 30K college players? over five million.. population size matters.

What does a following have to do with anything? given the conversion rates of Juniors to First graders in order to have a viable competition you need a LARGE participation rate. How hard is that to understand?

NZSSC census for school participation. League participation is so low it doesn't make the list

Has table tennis dropped so much due to CTE as well? And whats this critical number you keep mentioning we are heading to? There are so many factors at play in jnr sports participation, funding being one of the key ones, that to individualize one variable, ie parent fear of concussion, is ludicrous. I can guarantee if the NZRL income went from $8.8mill to $88million we'd see a decent increase in RL participation

You keep harping on about CTE? I have stated several times it is one factor, albeit an increasing one. And we shall see at the end of this year when the sports participation figures are out after a full non covid year just how much.

I’m now only a reader of this thread, and all I can vision is @Te Kaha playing the role of Peter Balish in his fight all enemies scene

That implies there are "enemies" and "battles" on here... anybody who gets angry or thinks they have an "enemy" or is in a "battle" needs to step away form the internet. This is an internet forum where everybody's opinion is worth exactly the same.... nothing.

I know.. but some take this thread way to seriously...
I played both rep Union and League in the mid 80’s, and I tell ya, Union was the way more fun to play.
Coming through the ranks I had as heroes, Steve Rogers, Brett Kenny, in League, and the Ella brothers in Union.
I would watch those Ella fellas play if it was on Saturday on the ABC for Randwick, for Sydney, NSW, the Barabarians etc. They were the shit.
I also loved the All Blacks, I got to meet the whole squad when they came over in 84 and they all signed the test programme I had, Sean Fitzpatrick, Mexted etc. I’ve still got it, in perfect condition.
I haven’t really been able to watch Union for 30 years. Somewhere it just became very boring. Yeah I would make an effort to watch the Beldisloe, but even that subsided about 20 years ago, and I figured that I shouldn’t have to be making an effort, I should be wanting to watch.

this really has nothing to do with anything, I just thought I’d post it as I have some time to do so.

Fair enough, everybody is different, everybody has different tastes. A concept that seems to be foreign to some on here.

The New Zealand Warriors have announced plans to field five junior development teams across the Harold Matthews Cup (U17s) and Jersey Flegg (U21) competitions in 2024 - with a sixth team to be introduced in 2025.

After three seasons without any development squads due to COVID restrictions, New Zealand is returning to the NSW Cup and SG Ball Cup (U19s) and club CEO Cameron George was excited to announce the club's proposed pathways structure.

“This is the next major step forward in resetting the club after being away from home for three years,” George said in a club statement.

“From having no development teams – just our NRL side – we're now aiming to have a total of five teams next year and six from 2025.

“Historically it's the biggest investment in development and pathways we've ever had. It also aligns perfectly with our strategic partnership with the Pasifika Aotearoa Collective."

In addition to the Warriors' return to NSW Cup, New Zealand is looking to break back into the NRLW since the club was forced to withdraw from the competition in 2021.

As is par for the course of this thread there's incorrect facts in this post - Fitzy didn't tour in 1984 and him and Mex never played in an AB team together. Your memory is playing tricks on you. ;)

But, as to the main point of your post, if you don't like rugby anymore then yeah no point watching it. I don't like Origin so don't watch it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I'd been told League has neither had a strong presence in schools. A lot of kids in Auckland play Rugby for their school and League for a club on the w.e?
I think it's measuring participation of school aged, not whether they play for school teams. I've used this example earlier to highlight the dire situation - when I played league on Sundays at high school (rugby was Saturday) in Hawkes Bay there were 4/5 teams in the comp, now they barely can field two teams and our region doesn't even feature in the latest NZRL annual report despite the fact the chair in the region is famous Kiwi enforcer Kevin Tamati. To give even more perspective between Hastings Boys and Napier Boys schools one of them has either won or contested the final in the past 5 national rugby schoolboys competitions. Which is to say there's talent in the region that league should be tapping into but isn't.

Pretty low, only 13 of 110 high schools play RL.

School sports participation in NZ 2022: And thankfully these are real participation numbers, not just one off experiences! RL ranks 20th. If you include Touch and RL together it ranks 7th. ARLC and NZRL really need to get Touch aligned like they have in Aus!
