All New Zealand stupor rugby derby clash still fails to attract a crowd.
That crowd does look terrible. I lived in Dunedin 25 years ago and back then that game would’ve pulled a good crowd at the old Carisbrook ground, Super Rugby really seems to have lost its crowd appeal. All New Zealand stupor rugby derby clash still fails to attract a crowd.
It’s been said thousands of times on here but it needs saying again that super rugby lost a huge part of its competitive edge when the South African teams pulled up stumps and headed to Europe. That crowd does look terrible. Also I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who finds Forsyth Barr stadium a really visually unappealing place, it’s got all the charm of an aircraft hangar. I wonder if the broadcasting is located in the same side of the stadium as the majority of the seating so it’s out of view? If so it’s not a great look.
Pack em in Melbourne...It’s been said thousands of times on here but it needs saying again that super rugby lost a huge part of its competitive edge when the South African teams pulled up stumps and headed to Europe.
Add to that the rapid decline of rugby union in Australia and you’ve got the perfect storm for a competition in crisis and in a seemingly unstoppable death spiral.

why? To allow teams from Japan and Argentina in?They were forced out
complaints from South Africa?first super rugby forced out one team (think it was the lions) then their were complaints about the time zones so the other south African teams followed suit
exactly. They obviously don’t have the talent depth for 5 teams.Australia three teams was perfect for them. Five diluted it so that they became cannon fodder to the kiwis
what a shame.should have left it at 12 teams now the whole comp will end up dieing off one day in its current format
South Africa wanted to add another team and the kiwis and Aussies complained (think this was before Japan or Argentina when it was 12 teams)why? To allow teams from Japan and Argentina in?

bad call. Should’ve dropped a Aussie team instead.South Africa wanted to add another team and the kiwis and Aussies complained (think this was before Japan or Argentina when it was 12 teams)
celtic league I think.after a year in the comp they were forced out to the union comp with wales Scotland (what’s that called ? )
haha!! Good to see that it’s not only the NRL and super league run by knuckle draggers.Ce
Japan was added but never got a cut of the tv money (remind you of anyone lol )
bet they wouldnt complain anymore. The Aussies and kiwis were complaining about the sa time zone and the travel
perfect number for union considering the population of NZ and the strength of club RU in Australia.12 teams was a very successful competition
and were pretty competitive as well.Aussie clubs were averaging 20 to 30k. Compared to 5k now lol
So there was at least one positive to come out of Covid19.
they blame the kiwis for basically forcing them out
Whats Australia's excuse? So there was at least one positive to come out of Covid19.
Breaking news, local businessman is afraid of competition and would like to maintain his de facto monopoly!NRL SUICIDE’: LATEST BLOW TO EXPANSION SAGA
By David Riccio and Michael Carayannis
The NRL’s push to expand the competition into New Zealand has hit a major hurdle with Warriors owner Mark Robinson labelling the proposal as “suicide’’.
News Corp revealed last month the NRL’s long-term hopes of adding three more teams to the competition.
The 18th team is likely to either come from PNG or a combined PNG/ Pasifika venture by 2026 with plans gaining momentum to add a historic team from the region.
However, there is also support to eventually expand the NRL to 20 teams which would see another team added from New Zealand and either a second Melbourne team or a side from Perth.
NRL clubs want a say in any proposed expansion and Robinson has already indicated he would not support any plans to add another team into the Warriors heartland.
“It’s a 100 per cent no from me,” Robinson said.
“The only place you’d send it would be the South Island, but even then the South Island is rugby territory.
“At the end of the day, when the Warriors are at their best, we get 20,000 to a game.
“When it’s raining and cold, we get 13,000. So there’s no way it’s financially viable.
“It would be suicide for someone to start another club in New Zealand.”
The Warriors are only just starting to find their feet again having spent two years away from New Zealand because of Covid-19.
The ramifications have been severe with the Warriors virtually having to start again with reconnecting with fans, sponsors and rugby league at grassroots level.
Rugby league was a near nonentity in New Zealand during their time away.
They would never make any money because you’ve got to have an entire junior pathways structure for that new team,” Robinson said.
“It’s not just about the NRL. You can’t survive only with an NRL team, it’s about the entire foundation of the club from the grassroots upwards.
“You’re not going to get the players. You’re going to have to buy all the players from Australia and pay top dollar to get them to move over.
“It’s a waste of money going to New Zealand unless they’re (NRL) are going to prop it up.
“I firmly believe Perth should be the location for expansion. They were doing well before they exited the comp last time.”
Makes you think .. why he felt he needs to oppose a new team in NZ?NRL SUICIDE’: LATEST BLOW TO EXPANSION SAGA

The rivalry already exists between Auckland & Christchurch on MANY levels. This is like asking the local burger joint what they think about McDonald's moving in next door lol
I'm more convinced they need another team now, obviously the Warriors are cruising on the monopoly they have, it would serve the rl community well if they had some competitive drive.
I like how he favours Perth besides the fact he’s in NZ and has no clue about Perth or why there.
Just anywhere but here please
The fact that he's made this statement mean that there's rumbling under the surface for another NZ team and he’s gotten wind of it and done his level best to try and stop it.
So the rivalry is born before the team even exists, it's going to be epic!
Totally agree. Biggest sporting rivalry bar none! The rivalry already exists between Auckland & Christchurch on MANY levels.
Blue & White vs Red & Black
North Island vs South Island
Metropolitan multicultural city vs Big rural-adjacent city
Put a Christchurch team into the NRL, and you'll see NZ's biggest sporting rivalry - bar none - come into the league.

This article did say he’s ok with a team on the South Island as opposed to Wellington provided it has decent pathwaysThe rivalry already exists between Auckland & Christchurch on MANY levels.
