Keep in mind that this is an all NZ top of the table( top prior to the game)clash on a fine day .

Super rugby is done.
They might be playing it for another 5 maybe 10 years but nobody will be watching.

I always thought it was done 20 years ago as only Blues, Crusaders and Hurricanes got big crowds but the Chief's and Highlanders crowds were poor.
They should of stuck with the NPC and Ranfurly Shield.
Even Super Rugby has killed the big stadiums of South Africa and at the same time killed it's own historic Currie Cup but neither are a miss as South Africa are the most boring Rugby nation on Earth with England 2nd.

Rant over.

Actually this video inadvertently makes the case for why Christchurch would get a team before Wellington, even though the North Island has the edge population wise.

The cake tin is dreadful. Without a decent crowd atmosphere any second New Zealand team will end up like Super Rugby sides.
We absolutely screwed up making the Wellington stadium an oval. It should have been rectangular for rugby, rugby league & concerts/events. Keep in mind that when the stadium was built in 1999 the Wellington Phoenix didn't exist yet.

The location is FANTASTIC but the design lousy.

The plan should have been to replace the old Athletic Park with a rectangular stadium where the cake tin is, and redevelop the Basin Reserve (cricket ground) gradually over a 10-20 year series of upgrades. (First things first, getting TV quality floodlights installed).

With a long running program of upgrades, we would have seen the drop-off in cricket attendances & adjusted the plans along the way to adapt to that.

Multi-use footy & cricket grounds are THE WORST.

The warriors crowds have been amazing

their form has been good sure but there’s more at play here

it’s onviously also related to the decline of super rugby

mt smart sure looks good packed to the rafters

Blow it up and rebuild it

Christchurch has by far the best rugby stadium in nz

At least the union guys managed to post a crowd figure for once

that’s a big achievement for them these days

they don’t like posting the sub 10k or 5k crowds

It's a basic formula: a rectangular footy ground, hosting a team that plays attractive & winning footy.

A few years like this & the argument for AT LEAST upgrades, if not a new stadium will be compelling.

Don't say "it's not gonna happen", as once you get to the playoffs it's very much a game-by-game proposition ;)

But yeah, a sustained period of Warriors success will open up a lot of questions - especially keeping in mind that the Auckland City Rail Link (CRL) train tunnel is due to open around 2025, which will make public transport a lot more frequent & fast - and deliver electric trains right into the heart of the city (instead of just it's edge)

They might outgrow mt smart at this rate

and after years of having the warriors crush my hopes you never have confidence in them lol

I remember the days of watching them on Sunday midday our time from mt smart and any time they were up by ten or less with ten mins to go and they would find a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory

It's about damn time to be honest.

We had 3 eras of promise that fell over.

* The original 1995 setup were close to cracking the top 8 that year, if not for a replacement rule breach that cost us 2 competition points, then the Superleague war became a huge distraction that stopped us building on a solid debut season.

* Daniel Anderson showed immense promise in getting a team to perform to their potential, then shot himself in the foot.

* Ivan Cleary unlocked the secret to getting the club really humming.. and we would've done well to keep him - but alas no.

Every other coaching setup we've had aside from those 3 has been rubbish.

I just hope it's 4th time lucky - as I think we've got it right again now - just need to stick with Webster.

Penrith opened up their pathways better for local talent.. 2 Premierships deep now..
The Warriors have only just opened the can of juniors... in 3 to 5 years everyone will be getting blown off the park by the Warriors.

their early crowds were amazing

warriors look good but it’s early days

I would love to bulldoze it and build a copy of what Christchurch are getting - rectangular, covered, and up to modern specs.

Cricket can bog off back to the Basin, it's the better ground to spend a whole day at, anyway.

Take my rates money, NOW! :)
Wellington could use a covered stadium. Not just because of weather but it would potentially allow sone movement in the limits on night games there.

Good call, and we'll definitely know if this era of the Warriors is contender material after the next 3 games - Storm, Roosters & Panthers.

Win at least 2 of those 3, and we are indeed the 'real deal'.

They’ve had their momentum killed a few times, by super league then coaching/management implosions. Crowds were good in 2002-03 and again in the Cleary years. This year though is looking the best since 95. But that could partly be to do with there only having been two games at Mt Smart so far this year. If they can maintain it that’ll be fantastic, especially when you consider Mt Smart itself is fairly in need of some upgrades. It’s got decent main stands but it’s pretty rough around the edges.
