New Zealand 2 will deal a massive blow to NZ rugby

There’s a number of insular rugby folk in NZ that just can’t get their heads around the fact that other codes exist. Back in the 90’s/early 00’s and maybe still today, the news would feature rugby first, during cricket season
sounds like a large Aussie city on the southern coast across from Tasmania...

GC is hard to judge. They've never had any sustained period of success in the NRL (or AFL). I think League will always be more entrenched and part of the culture than AFL no matter where you go in QLD though, simply due to State of Origin. Even their supposed "strong hold" Cairns isn't AFL dominant. League is probably still stronger there.
In Cairns league has twice as many teams. It’s a no contest.

No argument with him. The Friday 6pm game should be in NZ most weeks, either Warrirors at home or an NRL team playing in one of the other NZ cities. If NRL was serious about NZ, which it isnt, it would have already planned this. There should be at least 16-20 NRL games in NZ every year. Wellington and Christchurch should have 2 at least every year.

I think the ARLC doesnt really know what it wants to be, responsible for the game in mostly just the East coast of Aus, or a regional developer of the game across multiple countries.
WARL being forcibly taken over by the NRL was a big step backwards for the game in WA.

It's strange that he's telling others to not think that they're 'some sort of hero' while in the process of mythologising himself and his team as some sort of hero lol.

It was in the Warriors own interest to relocate to Australia during covid, they could have been easily replaced if they hadn't and the competition would have gone on like nothing had changed. Nobody promised them anything for doing it either, and they weren't the only ones to make sacrifices during the pandemic.

Here's a novel idea; why don't you and the NZRL come up with your own events instead whinging at the NRL to do everything for you. Melbourne (and Sydney for that matter) monopolising ANZAC Day never made any sense, and if you don't like it then why don't you refuse to participate and talk to other sides whom might be willing to come to a more reasonable agreement. Not having Canberra involved in ANZAC Day never made any sense either, just saying.

BTW, an NRLW Magic Round sounds like it'd be a money pit to me.

If the NRL were serious about NZ they'd have a long term strategy to have 4/5 teams in NZ, and be talking about an NZ conference in the long term.

Forcibly taking games from other markets just burns those markets and those fanbases, basically all you're doing is moving the problem instead of addressing it. It'd also give the Warriors a massive, and completely unfair, commercial and competitive advantage over the rest of the clubs if those clubs were expected to effectively give up their home games so the Warriors could effectively have 16-20 games at home a season.

Hows it a home game? Its a 1000km between Auckland and Christchurch! Given some sydney clubs are playing away games less than 20km away from their home ground Im not sure that argument holds much water!

Thats why Soccer is the real enemy to the Rugby codes and AFL.
Yeah the moment it gets a real foothill of it can steamroll any other code.

Um, I think you missed the point, that's not where Devlin's coming from, he's anti rugby (at the moment) because he's on the contrarian internet radio station.

TBH, I think the content of your comment is outdated anyway, most NZers, including rugby fans, want a successful women's soccer world cup.
That’s why I mention the 90’s/00’s. I have my experience but it’s 20 years ago. I take your point and it’s not everyone in NZ thst feel that way

Aussie Rules in Cairns has a big pokie den(Cazalys) at AFL Park that they just lucked into having at the right high traffiked location. The local comp is laughably amateur with lots of southern blow ins.

Make no mistake, Cairns is Rugby League Heartland despite the ARLC best efforts to kill it off

The CDRL is a geniune breeding ground for RL stars. Helium Luki and Jeremiah Nanai have come through Cairns RL juniors. Brad Arthur coached shortly before getting his NRL gig. Ben Barba is currently playing for the Mossman Sharks and Burgess for Brothers now

So the NRL and AFL need to be prepared but I still think Soccer will never reach English Premiership standard in Australia more like whats happening in USA and Canada as NFL/NBA and NHL are doing just fine.
Soccer is dieing in Australia

average crowds are under 8k

and this is as a summer sport hiding away from the big football codes

crowds In Wellington are under 5k

A League might be "dieing" but soccer sure isn't going anywhere.
