New Zealand 2 will deal a massive blow to NZ rugby

You have a fallacy that because something has happened in the past, it will happen again..

Murdoch is gone..Smith has gone ….

The world doesnt stay the same … I don’t care what happened 10:years ago.

The only way I can see your proposal working is if Foxtel, Ch9 and Ch10 work together. There's more likely than not going to be a conflict of interest that prevents this from working. Ch9, Ch10 and Foxtel did it 22 years ago with AwFuL. That relationship dissolved by the end of the broadcast deal. Ch10 and Foxtel saddled up with Ch7 for the next round of rights. After this round of rights expired, Ch7 and Foxtel went to the negotiating table without Ch10 by their side. I don't recall anyone trying it since.

Didn't the ARLC look at breaking the broadcast rights into separate packages in the past?

They opted against doing so.

With or without Murdoch, Foxtel is still a ruthless business. They need as much exclusive content as possible to make their business work. I cannot see Foxtel offering a bid that doesn't include coverage of all games. If the ARLC try to take some games off the table then Foxtel will lower their bid. I cannot see Foxtel acquiring the rights to everything and then selling a game to Ch10.

We'll have to wait and see who is right. I won't be betting on things changing too much.

Interesting article from when the Canterbury Rugby League played its last club final at RL park in 2018:

Why would they give up the lease to a ground they had played at since 1912

They should’ve been paid out that’s how it works in business

what a disgrace

at the least why couldn’t they share the ground

yet again rugby union showing its true parasitic nature

the fact they averaged 7k in the 80s is very promising for an nrl side

I understand them giving the ground up at the time- the situation in Christchurch then would’ve made it a bad look if they hadn’t helped out where they could and it was the most suitable site for a temporary city stadium .
but it really sounds like they didn’t get anywhere near enough in return. I’d hope there’s going to be significant ongoing council investment in their new ground.

The opinion piece mentioned that league games were still be played there but that the bulk of club league is moving to the new developed sport centre.

Do you genuinely lack the empathy to understand why a city destroyed by an earthquake would utilise the remaining stadium in the city for the biggest sports team in the city?

Not only that but the earthquake had damaged the ground so it needed major works doing, which the crl wouldnt have the mOney for. I dont suppose they had much choice really.

NQ and Perth had them scaffolding stands up for years so they do last a long time.

They’ve been using them at Mt Smart for years too. They don’t really wear out unless rust gets the steel.

The new sports centre ground actually looks better suited for park footy, but hopefully the Addington ground can be retained as an intermediate sized facility. If it’s sold off or dismantled I wonder if the stands could be relocated?

Yes they can, we bought one from a golf course for the north stand at craven park before the new stand was built.

Hilariously accusing me of what you're doing. The simple fact is claiming the fans will come from Auckland is bollocks without details, and you're just doing all you can to avoid providing any because you have no real understanding of the city and the sport in the city.
Where else would they come from mate? We are talking about a future where the NRL invests in the game and grows it, you know... creating new fans. Not a hard concept to grasp

No i think gaining new supporters in either Wellington (including surrounding provinces as done currently by the Hurricanes) and South Island both with 1m + populations is a better idea than than dividing the Warriors heartland of 1.5m by 2. Dividing Auckland in 2 gives an each team if evenly split 750k of the city, significantly diminishing the Warriors core market.
A Hamilton base at least adds 800k -1m to the new teams fan base using the chiefs catchment model
So yes Auckland 2 Is definitely the least desirable of those 4 scenarios
I'd be happy with Hamilton

We should have empathy for Union because their stadium was destroyed in an earthquake.

I'll have sympathy when France's assets are returned with interest and when South African RU releases RL from their ownership and let's it be its own sport
That’s why it’s the nrls job to take over the pacific

we can’t do much about the nh or sa but we can land fatal blows against the sport in the pacific

a win for the good guys

20% of Unions player base worldwide is PI or of Pacific Islander heritage. RL taking a large bite out of that would cause some issues. Especially to a lot of national teams that pad their squad with PI's based on residency
