Yeh but internationals are unions strong bit

their World Cup has 8 billion people watching it after all
Our wc barely broke even, then France had to pull out of hosting. Theirs as sht as it is is making an absolute mint. Crazy crowds for such a poor game but to say they aren’t still light years ahead of us internationally is some serious delusion. What do you think the tri series crowds will be this month?

France pulled out because the French govt told the league boys they didn’t want any competition for the Vichy World Cup

maybe if England did more to revive rugby league in france

We should have empathy for Union because their stadium was destroyed in an earthquake.

I'll have sympathy when France's assets are returned with interest and when South African RU releases RL from their ownership and let's it be its own sport
This it to you and your other troll mates. Clearly the empathy is with the people of Chch and them being able to go and watch sport.

But carry on being knobs about it and fighting your forever war. I'll happily spend my weekends enjoying both codes.

Mate you know some people on here can’t get it through their heads that NZ doesn’t have a forever war going on between the codes, let alone trying to demonstrate how the situation in Christchurch in the years immediately following the earthquake transcended any code barriers or even sport itself.

Being kicked out of your home of 100 years cause the mansion of the rich guy down the st burned down is hardly what most people would think of as fair

Except that’s a huge oversimplification too, as the old League ground was also damaged and unusable

They had a lease.

that’s worth something in terms of being compensated

and it’s turned out badly for them

this is probably why league is so small in New Zealand is when push comes to shove they let union do whenever they want

union has a history of being parasitic towards league and sadly I don’t think nz is any different

Nice take on international rugby league being so neglected that it now can’t even provide any surety of being viable to Govt’s!

Just need French people to move to north of England, have kids who play rugby league and still consider themselves French. Worked for the PI‘s
here lol

English clubs could start getting French juniors in like nrl clubs did with kiwi talent ?

putting toulose in sl and getting them immune from relegation.
Catalans has done nothing for French rugby league internationally. Toulouse will no doubt ril the team with English and nrl players as well. They had a chance and didnt have the resources to be sustainable in SL.

reality is it seems you need 100 plus players eligible for a country in a ft pro league to have any impact on quality of international side. Language and culture means you arent getting many French kids wanting to move to the north of England. Having been to south of France I can’t blame them!

you’d need 4 French clubs in SL and serious investment in French jnr rugby league befor you saw France competitive at international level.

Hopefully Toulouse can get some bigger money backers and one day be as succesful as Perpignan have been.

Toulose
Lyon
Marseille
Peripgnan

but yet English rugby league doesn’t have the money for that

I’d disagree about what catalans have done for French rugby league. They’ve won the cc. They may win super league

do they still pay the 500k to play in the cc I read they do ?
And do they pay for away teams travel and lodging ?

I didn’t say they haven’t been good for French rugby league, I said they havent had any influence on the competitiveness of the French rugby league team.

no the english game doesnt have the money to pay for expansion teams sadly, and there isnt the backing in France for those clubs either. If there was they would be in SL as there is a clear pathway for them to get there. Unlike here where there is no pathway and you have to hope one day the nrl will expand.

Toulouse beat bradford last night in promotion playoffs so still some hope they might yet get back up

They had a lease and a damaged ground. The city needed a new stadium for all major rectangular sports events and the Showgrounds was the best site for a temporary build that could be done quickly. It couldn’t be done on the old stadium site as demolition would’ve taken much longer and the ground was liquefied- it’s now been reverted to parkland as it can’t be built on again.
the CRL eventually got a new location and still got to use the stadium that was built although they didn’t always get first option against bigger events.
was it ideal? No, but let’s not pretend it was Vichy level f**kery.

Your knowledge of how things are in NZ are on a par with your use of punctuation - it's negligible.

You're arguing here only based on one opinion piece that you didn't even read properly.

You keep mentioning compensation as if CRL received none, when they did. The CRL entered into a sub-lease with the council to allow the ground to be used by other sports and which included getting the ground back up to a usable standard (at a cost of $20m) along with an annual fee to CRL. Part of the agreement was that the council would build facilities at Nga Puna Wai, and the CRL and council renegotiated the sub-lease a number of times.

Furthermore, the ground has not just been used by rugby, league has used it, soccer has used it, it's hosted concerts.

Go fight your forever war on Aussie threads so we can discuss the pros and cons of NZ2 maturely without you constantly crying about what's happening in Oz, France in WW2, NZ in the 1930s.

That’s what happened to French rugby league clubs

admitted they didn’t put broken glass on the field to stop them playing the sport or take their assets or lock them up for playing the game but they did take their ground from them

If they got immunity from relegation and a share of the tv money then I think they would get the money from French govt and business like catalans have done

if catalans didn’t have immunity they would’ve got relegated (widnes got relegated and finished one spot higher) and never would’ve built up their business like they have where their Turnover is amongst the highest in super league

Such is equity in sport with promotion and relegation.

But again that’s not what happened here. It wasn’t forcibly repossessed and there was compensation. And the CRL also had the problem of having an earthquake damaged facility they couldn’t afford to fix.
