nahI wouldn't be surprised if they added Brisbane 3 and then shut up shop at 18 teams.
Money talks. Bullshit walks.
Expansion is going to be funded by the broadcasters. There's only one location in the world that the broadcasters will want.
Fordham: “We’re really committed to working with the NRL in growing the competition, and Queensland is a big part of that. We think there’s room for another team here in Queensland, and the Dolphins have been the perfect example.“The more games we can get played featuring Queensland teams in Southeast Queensland, the better. The engagement in rugby league here is just next level, and the energy of the crowds has a material impact on the quality of the broadcasts that we make. It helps create atmosphere, it makes the commentary team rise, it makes the production team rise.” Head of Strategy WWOS, Simon FordhamThe Battle of Brisbane: Behind Nine’s NRL push into Queensland
During the Broncos v Dolphins much hyped NRL clash, Mediaweek caught up with Nine's Kylie Blucher and Simon Fordham.www.mediaweek.com.au
Maybe 30 yearsYea... the idea of another 3 NRL teams in NZ is hard to comprehend.
But you dont think a 24 team comp overall within, say, 20 years isnt feasible?
GreedyAuckland, Christchurch, Wellington, Waikato-Bay of Plenty (Hamilton-Tauranga-Rotorua)
There's your 4 NZ teams, if that happens.
If it's to be 3, then Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington makes sense - and that could be made to work really well.Greedy
3 tops imo
Thanks for posting this. Just jumped into the YouTube comments to throw a few jabs
There’s one rugby club in Auckland that doesn’t have a problem with crowds
Bar one or two seasons, has Super Rugby ever been a well attended thing? (Even in NZ?)It's weird, I kind of feel sorry for RU in NZ, if it really is struggling that is. I have no sympathy for RU in Australia though. The sport represents everything that is wrong with society - elitism, classist attitudes, nepotism, exclusivity. The crazy thing is that they don't seem to have even attempted to change their ways over the years. They are so stuck In their thinking that they are superior to RL simply because they are followed and played by by posh merkins and RL is followed and played by the riff raff.
The other reason a Waikato/BoP team would eventually make sense is demographic- it’s the fastest growing region of NZ and taken as a whole has a larger population than Canterbury or Wellington. Half of the entire NZ population is in the upper north island and outside of Auckland the bulk of that is the Waikato/BoP.If it's to be 3, then Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington makes sense - and that could be made to work really well.
A 4th really depends on whether a Hamilton based team (with the odd Bay of Plenty game) would be considered too geographically close to the Warriors, and perceived to be encroaching on their territory too much.
I think that 4th team in Waikato/BOP could work, but due to it's proximity to Auckland, it's further back in priority than Christchurch & Wellington.
Super Rugby attendances seem pretty patchy in NZ but the big games are still drawing and the code as a whole isn’t struggling the way it is in Aus.Bar one or two seasons, has Super Rugby ever been a well attended thing? (Even in NZ?)
Is NZ Rugby "struggling"? I assume that All Blacks games are still doing OK, and are where all the money is.
