New Zealand 2 will deal a massive blow to NZ rugby

We love a bit of recency bias in Rugby League.

The Warriors have had a bit of sustained crowd support. "Lets have 4 teams in NZ!!"

The Dolphins finish 13th in their first season, "Lets expand again, and immediately to Brisbane!"

afl is about 6th most participated in sport in WA. If participation had any relevance to prof sports following Soccer, Basketball and Netball would have the biggest clubs in Perth. The two are in no way congruent to each other.

The two most attended professional sports in Australia are way down the list of participation sports rates.

Rugby Union is yesterday's game

Everybody, I mean everybody is turning to Rugby League. And loving it.

“Everywhere you go, you are hearing ‘Up the Wahs’, and it’s absolutely amazing for people like me to see,” he said.

“It’s exciting to see the passion of the fans. I don’t think the All Blacks have the free run that they used to. For many years rugby [union] ruled, but now other sports have stepped up like league and even other sports like basketball.

“The engagement we’re getting right around New Zealand and even globally is unbelievable. From the deep south [island] to the top of the north, then east to west, it doesn’t matter what town, everyone here is riding high on the momentum of the Warriors.

“We are in a very privileged position that we can put so much joy into this great country of ours. And whether you’re a league fan, a rugby fan or just a sports fan, you’re part of our footy club, we’re making you feel engaged through a lot of things that we’re doing and we’re really proud of that.”

Rugby union champions league will save nz club game
With the European Champions Cup ending in late May & Super Rugby ending in late June, it sounds like just a matter of finding a compromise end for each, then starting the "Champions League" right after that.

Simple.. until you realize that runs over the mid-year test window (so needs a restructure of when tests are played, then the flow-on to provincial competitions in NZ & South Africa.

I don't envy RU trying to make everything fit.. and I strongly suspect a competition like this new Champions League will be the trigger for RU to switch the Northern Hemisphere to a Summer Season.

Can’t see the northern hemisphere switching to summer season just to help super rugby clubs.

sounds to me that this champions league competition is potentially causing more problems than fixing them

No Im showing there are many metrics to measuring popualarity of a sport. Grassroots participation rates are not necessarily reflective of top tier professional sports following.
If it was soccer, basketball and netball would have by far the biggest and wealthiest professional comps in the country!

Thats only part of the reason, its also suited to all body types and abilities, is easier to play if theres just a few of you, can be easily played in the school yard and is the biggest professional sport in the world with global superstars.

Occasionally, which again is why its nonsense to suggest the Force of today has any relevance what so ever to how an NRL club will go, or that no-one in Perth follows other sports other than AFL, which may also have been one of your BS claims in the past?
Force aren't a threat in today's climate. I would be surprised if they ever recovered back to where they were in 2007.

Fumblebal is the most popular game in Perth by a county mile. Other games are followed at a niche level, but none of them generate the levels of support that's reserved for the Eagles and Dockers.

The WAFL teams generate strong crowds for a second tier competition. The GF drew 27k last year.

We’ve got rugby league booming in nz and he wants to ignore a place where the people want our sport for one where they don’t

New Zealand could support three of four teams. I'm all for New Zealand getting two of the next three licences. Polynesians are built for rugby league.

I think Perth Red underestimates just how strong fumbleball is in Western Australia. The fact the WAFL GF can pull 27k fans shows there's more than enough support for a third AwFuL club. Ironically, he's always bragging about the Eagles having 100k members and a waiting list for season tickets, yet he thinks there's no chance of Perth getting a third team. We've got the mayor of Joondalup -- the council area PR lives in -- putting his hand up to be the bass for a third AwFuL club. There's a consortium putting in a bid. I'd be really surprised if Perth doesn't get another AwFuL club.

Where else can AwFuL put a team?

Canberra have a 10 year deal with GWS. That rules out Canberra as a destination for at least a decade. Much of GWS Giants' fanbase is from Canberra. AwFuL won't want to weaken GWS.

Darwin will run at a $15m loss.

Adelaide isn't ready for a third team.

Tasmania enter in 2028. The 20th team will enter in the early 2030s at the earliest. . . Perfect timing for Canberra. I almost guarantee that there're multiple get-out clauses in the ACT's contract with GWS that could get them out early under the right circumstances as well.

Canberrans make up a significant portion of GWS's members, but that doesn't necessarily equate to fans in this case. Most are members because it's a cheaper way to buy tickets and guarantees entry now that their matches regularly sell out.

I know plenty of GWS members, but I honestly can't think of a single person I know that's a GWS fan. Not saying that they don't exist, just that in reality they're very unusual.

At this point GWS playing games in Canberra is effecting their growth in Sydney as well, especially considering how they've been more successful here as a general rule, so it's in both parties interest to bail on the relationship sooner rather than later. Furthermore, whether or not they're viable without a secondary market isn't Canberra's problem, and it's only a matter of time before there's a political change that results in more scepticism about the ACT's relationship with GWS.

Perth, Canberra, or at a stretch Adelaide, are the only realistic options the AFL has on the table, and their decision between them will depend on the direction they intend to take the league in the short-mid term. They'll go with Perth if they want a reliable option that won't require heavy investment, Adelaide if they want to throw another bone to historic clubs and traditions outside of Melbourne, and Canberra if they want to push further growth north of the Barassi line.

The NT would be a shitshow. Political pressure will force them to make a show of considering it, but it won't be in the running unless some crazy funding source is found to bankroll the club, and even then it'd only be a matter of time before that well ran dry.
