New Zealand 2 will deal a massive blow to NZ rugby

The big 2 problems with an NZ comp running at 3rd tier is that the playing stock isn't going to be recognizable names, and cost (especially transport) is quite a bill to cover.

While the old Lion Red Cup had some great branding (especially some cool team names & jerseys), it couldn't surmount those issues.

That's why the current setup is workable - mostly local club competitions, with a limited provincial season after that. The costs are just more manageable that way.
Shit I’d love to see retro jerseys done of the Lion red Cup teams, I’d snap me up a unicorns one in a heartbeat

No they cant, their voting seat on the commission is in the constitution. To change the constitution would need them to agree! If the NRl needs the ARLC to take it to vote to return reserve grade or not Im not sure. I guess given the expense involved they would need to ratify the budget on it. Clubs will like it, they'll demand more money for something they are already doing and feather their nests a bit more.
The whole idea of the commission is it would reduce the extra expenses of having a qrl and nswrl

their primary interest is to protect their own interest even if it runs against what’s good for the game

Injuries was the single biggest factor this season but we’ve definitely copped more than our share of rubbish decisions

Injuries were certainly a big part in terms of team cohesion etc Forwards we’re fine and did their job but think Father Time hit a few of our backs quite badly, X factor and out and out pace is simply missing from our team and plenty of clubs exploited it

NSW cup wouldnt. By time Western Bears come in there'll only be two clubs in NSW cup that are not in effect full NRL reserve grade teams (Jets and Blacktown).
QRL cup it is much more problematic but Dolphins now have a full reserve grade side in Redcliffe and Titans and Cowboys both want one. There's only Broncos holding out at this time.
Interesting point on NSW Cup you raise there, about the Jets & Blacktown being the only NSW Cup teams that are not fully "in house" arms of NRL clubs.

If the Jets get into the NRL (let's say via that joint bid with Ipswich, as reported), then they could potentially have an NRL, U20 and Reserves team too - so there'd presumably be less pressure from them to preserve the status quo of NSW Cup.. in fact they may be happy with a Sydney based Newtown Jets in a "Sydney League" that's demoted to 3rd tier below 1st Grade & Reserves - as a way to have some extra depth playing some competition locally, while Ipswich do likewise in a Brisbane City competition that replaces Queensland Cup.

This is where the NRL need to step up the funding. Seriously. We should be setting up a decent National comp in NZ.
