The licence fee seems to be more of a 'what can you bring to the table' situation rather than just a straight up 'outbid everyone else with pure cash' scenario.

The Dolphins commited $2M per year to player development for example and because of their location, Fox stumped up $75M because it meant more highly rating Broncos matches on Fox and more SEQ content in general.

Christchurch could easily demonstrate 'buy-in' by committing to invest in more South Island player pathways which is a new playing pool for the NRL (very appealing), get Sky to commit to chipping in whatever they can and the NRL may be more than happy with that. Way better than Perth arrogantly writing $0

I've mentioned it before, but it's worth keeping in mind that bringing in Christchurch is ALSO signalling to other NRL clubs & bids that the NRL likes the prospect of games in a new & enclosed stadium.

There's some existing clubs out there that are pondering upgrades or new builds, plus expansion possibilities like Perth, Ipswich & Adelaide which may be looking at upgrades/new stadiums .

Bringing in a new club that plays mostly at One NZ Stadium & Forsythe Barr Stadium signals that the NRL values that type of facility - better playing conditions, better crowd comfort, ideal for night games.

Nz2 and Perth are totally different

Nz2 offers value to the tv deal in nz and also to Australia

Nz2 offers a huge pool of juniors to bring to the sport

And it helps international competition

I suspect the nrl might not ask them for a fee or ask for less than Perth, if their bid is strong in promises of junior spending

Chch already has hundreds of millions spent on two amazing South Island ground which are perfect for rugby league

Do you have your twitter algorithm tweaked so that it exclusively finds you positive things about league and/or negative things about rugby? I swear you spend more time searching for stuff about NZ than I do.

Funnily enough I know this guy, and as much as you're knocking one out over this tweet, he is actually a good example of the work that needs to be involved for your dream of league taking over NZ. Where he's originally from in NZ there's little domestic league to speak of and during winter he's actively involved in grassroots rugby.

He's also another example of the point we continually like to make that NZers can enjoy league and rugby without the hatred you often see over/on here. His thread is mostly rugby but there's league smattered in between there.

Also, I think most NZ rugby fans would agree that domestic rugby in NZ and Oz can't match the NRL GF. Not even back in the days when Super rugby had good live crowds could rugby ever match the NRL GF. The NRL is a hype machine that rugby can't match.

Many Australians just can't get their head around that, because culturally they've been conditioned to be particularly tribal in their devotion to ONE WINTER SPORT - be it aussie rules, league or union - and blindly hate the other two.

You gotta understand that these rivalries are nothing new……and just a symptom of other long term divisions within Australia‘s history…

the competition between AFL and RL in Australia is based on regional rivalries ( Melb v Sydney in the main) that have been around for more than a 150 years …

RU v RL is a bit more complicated…there is the social aspect of course …the well off versus the working class …which also historically has meant English v Irish descendants and incorporating the Protestant versus Catholic thing …I mean I’m not saying its Glasgow or anything but a century ago it was a bit more of a big deal and it’s just another thing that people have used to beat their chests about and distinguish themselves from each other…

They just want to watch good rugby

Literally the idea of making the northern union game more attractive came from them watching how the all blacks played the game

The only reason anyone in Australia is a union fan over league is they went to a private school and want to pretend to be posh

Even then they all watch the nrl and in most cases way more than union

Even on twitter all the wallabies fans post about nrl fairly regularly esp origin and the grand final
