New Zealand 2 will deal a massive blow to NZ rugby

A second New Zealand team is absolutely still an option. I am going over there on Sunday for the Test match so I will have a good look at the region.
“These consortiums need to have a strong business case that shows how coming into the competition is going to bring a lot of benefits to the game of rugby league.
“If those benefits aren’t there and the investment isn’t there, well, we won’t go ahead with expansion.
“But the initial plan (for 19 teams in 2028) is still possible depending on how discussions go with the clubs and the WA government.”

Former NRL boss David Moffett was disappointed his Christchurch-based bid was shunned, but vowed to press ahead with plans for the South Island Kea to be part of an expanded competition.
“We are really disappointed to get the notification that our bid had been rejected,” Moffett said.
“We are reviewing it and we will be attempting to address the issues in respect to our bid and we will go back to the NRL and see whether we can provide another bid which meets their requirements.”
The Kea are one of three bids from New Zealand’s south island and Moffett said he was happy to continue working with the NRL.
“We’ve always taken the view especially with my experience in sports administration that it’s entirely within the rights of the NRL to decide when, if and who they are going to choose for an expansion team,” Moffett said.
“We actually respect that.
“We are fully supportive of their decision to go to Perth, PNG and whoever in New Zealand. We will continue to put our best foot forward and try to work out exactly where our bid fell down and address their issues.”

Full article is on the 18th club thread
That is the exactly how you respond to a rejected bid as a professional..WA Bears!

He will be an overall loss for the Warriors …he has done a great job at least off the field building interest and crowds and the game day experience for the fans ..

On the local expansion front … he has been someone who has generally talked down NZ2 …claims that NZ wont be ready for some years to support a second team …that sounds a little self interested to me ….

“New Zealand’s two-hour time difference with Australia’s eastern seaboard also offers broadcasters more timeslot options, as well added content for the NRL to sell in separate rights negotiations across the ditch.”

Nah, he's a chancer. The hype train of last year was down to the Covid hangover and finally getting games in NZ again, and Webby's new blood coming in (which stalled this year). Webby only came in because George's choice wasn't available. Arguably you can give him credit for the cheap tickets keeping fans involved but that is unsustainable long term.

Pre Covid under George was one of the worst Warriors eras with a journeyman Aussie focus from the club and awful signings like Lodge because George let the recruitment manager dominate.

Strange NZ Rugby are supposedly chasing him then?

Maybe the NPC could make use of him and try some cheap tickets because you could fire a shot gun into the seats and not be in danger of hitting anyone !

NZR are a mess at the moment, they're fighting amongst themselves over everything. It wouldn't surprise me that hiring a chancer was on their agenda.

Yeah … I can see they are in big trouble from over here!

Even more reason the NRL should put a second team in over there ASAP..

The Nrl has doubled in popularity in the last year, juniors are up 45% , the Warriors sold out right across the country on the back of a massive increase in their deal with sky. So naturally in the wake of an international selling out 2 weeks in advance.. this bloke is at it again, talking the game down- a League guy .. go figure.
The game is doing so well in NZ that it is literally unprecedented.

Why do you make things up? The Sky deal was signed in 2021 and lasts until 2027 so we wont know if there was a massive increase or not until sometime in the future.

Also, as I don't like you to get your hopes up too high, the junior numbers need to be put in perspective because the base numbers were so low. Plus, an increase in junior numbers is what every NZer who contributed to this thread said they wanted to see from the hype train Warriors of 2023.

Anyway, I'm not talking down league (I also talked down rugby in the same post :) ), I'm talking down George, he's a chancer. He's actually not a good CEO.

Games booming in NZ mate, deal with it.
While you've been telling us it's on it's knees.
I told you that that is what I was seeing while I was in NZ.. O no you said , fake holiday lol while telling me the completely false narrative of the game in NZ from your home is Australia...
A typical arrogant Union penut.

Again, why do you make things up? We told you "it was on it's knees" prior to the Warriors 2023 season, and it was at that time.

I'm happy for it to be booming, unlike you I have the ability and maturity to enjoy more than one oval ball sport.

Also, at least spell your insults correctly ya peanut.

That's bs and you know it, you were talking it down on the previous page.
