I think there is an element of wishful thinking happening here …I could say that if adding NZ2 is going to destroy Rugby in NZ, then what are they waiting for ? Should have happened by now right ?

Even if they get the nod now, the NRL doesn’t even want to bring them in for another 6-7 years supposedly ….doesnt seem like they are in a hurry to kill Union over there!
It will deal a massive blow.. I've been very clear about this lol

Unsurprising you're pumped for the NPC as born and bred Cantabrian. :p
What I find interesting is that you think you'll fold up Super Rugby and all the fans and sponsors just shuffle straight over to npc or something.
if they do that without a fuss they're not fans to begin with.
The NRL took 10 years to recover from SL war and lost a lot of fans.

As Super Rugby is already hemoraging fans , I can guarantee you that folding the comp and starting a new one will accelerate that exit.
There's a reason why the NRL are growing with such a meticulous nature.

It's a coincidence mate, anyone with half a brain ( like even caynard) draws the same conclusion.

I was walking my dog thinking about posting a thread like this then came back and saw you had done it

It’s funny how rugby league fans from different parts of Australia and different backgrounds can “get it”

The article by mehrtens was a huge whine about how scared he was about a second nrl side impact on union in nz

Eventually … lol
If Christchurch gets a team, it will be the biggest thing to happen to the sporting landscape there ever. The salary cap is more than double what Super Rugby pays ,NRL is watched by 3x the amount of people and the season is twice as long.
Having New Zealand’s biggest professional Union team dwarfed by A brand new NRL franchise is a massive blow!

So when will they start playing ? All the newspaper articles quote Team 20 coming in around the Brisbane Olympics …it will be a long buildup if that’s the case.,, the NRL apparently is in no hurry to deliver the kill shot to Union over there

Its not really in the NRLs best interest to kill off Union in NZ, currently the players born in NZ get a large chunk of their development from the NZ Union systems and comps- take that away without a viable replacement and they kill their golden goose. As it presently stands the NZRL systems and comps aren’t equiped to do it in the absence of NZRU

Nrl is in no position to kill off union in nz anytime soon

Making sure the second nz side is viable and grows the game is the priority

They don’t even come in until 2030 and would need a good ten years to get established

And that’s forgetting Wellington needs a side too
