2024 Southern Zone Participation Report
Southern Zone Rugby League Sees Significant Growth in 2024
The Southern Zone Rugby League community is celebrating another remarkable year of growth in 2024, with participation numbers soaring by 41% compared to 2023. This impressive increase underscores the commitment and effort of players, volunteers, and staff across the Zone, including the districts of Southland, Otago, Aoraki, West Coast, and Te Tauihu.
Junior Participation Leading the Way
Junior players have been at the forefront of this expansion, with a staggering 73% growth in numbers. This success has been driven by the introduction of a 26-team Otago Junior Competition, Junior Competitions being held in Southland, West Coast and Aoraki which continue to grow year-to-year, and the recent school festivals held in Marlborough and Nelson.
Growth in Female Participation
Female participation continues to surge, with a 60% increase in 2024, following a 63% rise in 2023. Building on this momentum, the Southern Zone remains committed to expanding opportunities for female players in the years to come and providing pathways for women and girls in rugby league.
Youth Development Milestones
The youth division has also seen significant progress, with a 37% rise in participants. Notable achievements include full district representation (5 teams) in the 16s boys' grade at the South Island Youth Tournament. Additionally, the number of teams in the 16s girls' grade doubled from two to four, reflecting the growing enthusiasm in this space.
A Community Effort
This extraordinary growth is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the staff and volunteers from across the Zone. Their efforts across our five districts have created an environment where players of all ages and backgrounds can thrive.
The support from funders, sponsors and RSTs within the Southern Zone has made this achievable by ensuring opportunities to participate in rugby league can continue to be offered.
